Generalised knot groups distinguish the square and granny knots (with an appendix by David Savitt)
Given a knot K we may construct a group G_n(K) from the fundamental group of
K by adjoining an nth root of the meridian that commutes with the corresponding
longitude. These "generalised knot groups" were introduced independently by
Wada and Kelly, and contain the fundamental group as a subgroup. The square
knot SK and the granny knot GK are a well known example of a pair of distinct
knots with isomorphic fundamental groups. We show that G_n(SK) and G_n(GK) are
non-isomorphic for all n>1. This confirms a conjecture of Lin and Nelson, and
shows that the isomorphism type of G_n(K), n>1, carries more information about
K than the isomorphism type of the fundamental group. An appendix by David
Savitt contains some results on representations of the trefoil group in

A Green's function formulation for a nonlinear potential flow solution applicable to transonic flow
Routine determination of inviscid subsonic flow fields about wing-body-tail configurations employing a Green's function approach for numerical solution of the perturbation velocity potential equation is successfully extended into the high subsonic subcritical flow regime and into the shock-free supersonic flow regime. A modified Green's function formulation, valid throughout a range of Mach numbers including transonic, that takes an explicit accounting of the intrinsic nonlinearity in the parent governing partial differential equations is developed. Subsonic maneuver capability of a supersonic cruise fighter wing concept
A theoretical and experimental investigation was conducted of the subsonic maneuver capability of a fighter wing concept designed for supersonic cruise. To improve the subsonic maneuver capability, the wing utilized full-span leading- and trailing-edge flaps that were designed with the aid of a subsonic-analysis computer program. Wind-tunnel tests were made at Mach numbers of 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7. Force and moment data obtained were compared with theoretical predictions of Mach 0.5 from two subsonic-analysis computer programs. The two theoretical programs gave a good prediction of the lift and drag characteristics but only a fair prediction of the pitching moment. The experimental results of this study show that with the proper combination of leading- and trailing-edge flap deflections, a suction parameter of nearly 90 percent can be attained at a Mach number of 0.5 and a lift coefficient of 0.73; this is a three-fold improvement from 30 percent for the basic wing
Discovery of an Isolated Compact Object at High Galactic Latitude
We report discovery of a compact object at high Galactic latitude. The object
was initially identified as a ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog X-ray
source, 1RXS J141256.0+792204, statistically likely to possess a high X-ray to
optical flux ratio. Further observations using {\em
Swift}, Gemini-North, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory refined the source
position and confirmed the absence of any optical counterpart to an X-ray to
optical flux ratio of F_X/F_V > 8700 (3 sigma). Interpretation of 1RXS
J141256.0+792204 -- which we have dubbed Calvera -- as a typical X-ray-dim
isolated neutron star would place it at z ~ 5.1 kpc above the Galactic disk --
in the Galactic halo -- implying that it either has an extreme space velocity
(v_z >~ 5100 km s-1) or has failed to cool according to theoretical
predictions. Interpretations as a persistent anomalous X-ray pulsar, or a
``compact central object'' present conflicts with these classes' typical
properties. We conclude the properties of Calvera are most consistent with
those of a nearby (80 to 260 pc) radio pulsar, similar to the radio millisecond
pulsars of 47 Tuc, with further observations required to confirm this
classification. If it is a millisecond pulsar, it has an X-ray flux equal to
the X-ray brightest millisecond pulsar (and so is tied for highest flux); is
the closest northern hemisphere millisecond pulsar; and is potentially the
closest known millisecond pulsar in the sky, making it an interesting target
for X-ray-study, a radio pulsar timing array, and LIGO.Comment: ApJ, in press. We are grateful to the anonymous referee, who pointed
