    On the Equivalence of Dual Theories

    We discuss the equivalence of two dual scalar field theories in 2 dimensions. The models are derived though the elimination of different fields in the same Freedman--Townsend model. It is shown that tree SS-matrices of these models do not coincide. The 2-loop counterterms are calculated. It turns out that while one of these models is single-charged, the other theory is multi-charged. Thus the dual models considered are non-equivalent on classical and quantum levels.     The MERIT program is designed to demonstrate the feasibility of fuel savings by airlines through improved route selection using wind observations from their own fleet. After a discussion of weather and aircraft data, manually correcting wind fields, automatic corrections to wind fields, and short-range prediction models, it is concluded that improvements in wind information are possible if a system is developed for analyzing wind observations and correcting the forecasts made by the major models. One data handling system, McIDAS, can easily collect and display wind observations and model forecasts. Changing the wind forecasts beyond the time of the most recent observations is more difficult; an Australian Mesoscale Model was tested with promising but not definitive results

    Brand image is a key component of customer-based brand equity, and refers to the associations a consumer holds in memory. Such associations are often directional; one should distinguish between brand-to-attribute and attribute-to-brand associations. Information on these associations arise from two ways of collecting data respectively: brand-by-brand evaluations of all attributes and attribute-by-attribute evaluations of all brands. In this paper, the authors present a methodological approach, namely correspondence analysis of matched matrices, to assess the communalitites as well as asymmetries between brand-to-attribute and attribute-to-brand associations. The methodology results in perceptual maps visualizing brand image. The approach is illustrated in an empirical market research project in which two samples of consumers evaluated ten brands of deodorants and eleven attributes

    Golden Ratio Controlled Chaos in Supersymmetric Dynamics

    We construct supersymmetric Lagrangians for the recently constructed off-shell worldline N=3 supermultiplet YI/(iDIX)Y_I/(i D_I X) for I=1,2,3, where YIY_I and XX are standard, Salam-Strathdee superfields: YIY_I fermionic and XX bosonic. Already the Lagrangian bilinear in component fields exhibits a total of thirteen free parameters, seven of which specify Zeeman-like coupling to external (magnetic) fluxes. All but special subsets of this parameter space describe aperiodic oscillatory response, some of which are controlled by the "golden ratio," φ1.61803\varphi\approx1.61803. We also show that all of these Lagrangians admit an N=34N=3\to 4 supersymmetry extension, while a subset admits two inequivalent such extensions

    Leading and losing the tax competition race

    In this paper we extend the standard approach of horizontal tax competition by endogenizing the timing of decisions made by the competing jurisdictions. Following the literature on the endogenous timing in duopoly games, we consider a pre-play stage, where jurisdictions commit themselves to move early or late, i.e. to fix their tax rate at a first or second stage. We highlight that at least one jurisdiction experiments a second-mover advantage. We show that the Subgame Perfect Equilibria (SPEs) correspond to the two Stackelberg situations yielding to a coordination problem. In order to solve this issue, we consider a quadratic specification of the production function, and we use two criteria of selection: Pareto-dominance and risk-dominance. We emphasize that at the safer equilibrium the less productive or smaller jurisdiction leads and hence loses the second-mover advantage. If asymmetry among jurisdictions is sufficient, Pareto-dominance reinforces Risk-dominance in selecting the same SPE. Three results may be deduced from our analysis: (i) the race to the bottom is less severe than predicted; (ii) the smaller jurisdiction leads; (iii) the `big-country-higher-tax-rate' rule does not always hold.Endogenous timing, tax competition, first/second-mover advantage, Strategic Complements, Stackelberg, Risk dominance.

    Wilson Loops and QCD/String Scattering Amplitudes

    We generalize modern ideas about the duality between Wilson loops and scattering amplitudes in N=4{\cal N}=4 SYM to large NN QCD by deriving a general relation between QCD meson scattering amplitudes and Wilson loops. We then investigate properties of the open-string disk amplitude integrated over reparametrizations. When the Wilson loop is approximated by the area behavior, we find that the QCD scattering amplitude is a convolution of the standard Koba-Nielsen integrand and a kernel. As usual poles originate from the first factor, whereas no (momentum dependent) poles can arise from the kernel. We show that the kernel becomes a constant when the number of external particles becomes large. The usual Veneziano amplitude then emerges in the kinematical regime where the Wilson loop can be reliably approximated by the area behavior. In this case we obtain a direct duality between Wilson loops and scattering amplitudes when spatial variables and momenta are interchanged, in analogy with the N\cal N=4 SYM case.Comment: 39pp., Latex, no figures; v2: typos corrected; v3: final, to appear in PR

    Correlation lengths and E_8 mass spectrum of the dilute A_3 lattice model

    The exact perturbation approach is used to derive the elementary correlation lengths ξi\xi_i and related mass gaps mim_i of the two-dimensional dilute A_L lattice model in regimes 1 and 2 for L odd from the Bethe Ansatz solution. In regime 2 the A_3 model is the E_8 lattice realisation of the two-dimensional Ising model in a magnetic field at T=T_c. The calculations for the A_3 model in regime 2 start from the eight thermodynamically significant string types found in previous numerical studies. These string types are seen to be consistent in the ordered high field limit. The eight masses obtained reduce with the approach to criticality to the E_8 masses predicted by Zamolodchikov, thus providing a further direct lattice determination of the E_8 mass spectrum.Comment: 57 pages, Latex, Elsevier style file
