Body Type Consciousness and Its Relationship to Purchasing and Wearing Behavior of Clothing : Comparison between Korean and Japanese Female Students [Part I] : Body Type Consciousness Seen in Korean and Japanese Female Students

This paper examines the difference between Korean and Japanese female students in thelr body type consciousnesses. A questionnaire surveywas conducted for this purpose. The number of valid replies was 484.The results are as follows:(1) With respect to body size, Korean female studentsshow a tendency to be taller, heavierand larger waisted.(2) Female students both of countries are generally dissatisfied with their body types. Some significant differences were, however, found between them. Japanese female students are more dissatisefied with their figures, upper bodies and faces than Korean female students. While Korean female students are more dissatisfiedwith their heights.(3) Generally there was a wider gap betweenthe real body type and the ideal body type in Japanese female students. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 484 Korean and Japanese female students to clarify the differencein their purchasing and clothing behaviors. T-test, chi-square test and factor analysis were used to analyze the results. (In the following paper, Koreanfemale students are referred to as Koreans and Japanese female students as Japanese）1. Purchasing behavior of clothing1) Many Koreans obtain fashion information through wares on display at shops, while many Japanese find it in fashion magazines.2) Koreans favor abstract patterns for clothes, while Japanese favor solid color.Difference was also found in color taste for clothes. Koreans favor "black" and "white"，while Japanese favor "black", "navy"and "blue.3) With respect to purchasing attitude, Koreans attach importance to fashion, while Japanese think much of their own taste and are not very particular about brands.2. Clothing behavior1) Most students of both countries want to create a good coordination of upper and lower clothes.2) With respect to the images of preferred clothes, Koreans evaluate streamlined, urbane and modern ones more highly than Japanese do, while Japanese evaluate light, easy and bright ones more highly. The factor analysis has extracted 5 factors:① simplicity， ② modernity， ③ conspicuousness， ④ lightness and ⑤ casualness.Significant difference was found between the two countries in the first two factors but not in the last three
