Investigation of Changes in Sexual and Ejaculatory Functions after Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)
Changes in sexual function and ejaculatory function in patients who had undergone holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) were investigated using questionnaires. In this study, 77 patients on whom HoLEP was performed at our department from July 2010 to December 2010 were included. Of the 77 patients, the number of patients who could achieve an erection increased from 36 (46.8%) preoperatively to 52 (67.5%) postoperatively after HoLEP. Although postoperative ejaculatory dysfunction was found in 38 (73%) of 52 patients, 47 (90%) experienced orgasms, regardless of ejaculation, which is a high rate. With respect to ejaculatory satisfaction, patients who experienced an ejaculation had significantly higher satisfaction levels than those who did not. These results suggest that changes in postoperative ejaculatory function might affect satisfaction levels of ejaculation
Clinical results of proton beam therapy for advanced neuroblastoma
PurposeTo evaluate the efficacy of proton beam therapy (PBT) for pediatric patients with advanced neuroblastoma.MethodsPBT was conducted at 21 sites in 14 patients with neuroblastoma from 1984 to 2010. Most patients were difficult to treat with photon radiotherapy. Two and 6 patients were classified into stages 3 and 4, respectively, and 6 patients had recurrent disease. Seven of the 8 patients who received PBT as the initial treatment were classified as the high risk group. Twelve patients had gross residual disease before PBT and 2 had undergone intraoperative radiotherapy before PBT. Five patients received PBT for multiple sites, including remote metastases. Photon radiotherapy was used in combination with PBT for 3 patients. The PBT doses ranged from 19.8 to 45.5 GyE (median: 30.6 GyE).ResultsSeven patients are alive with no evidence of disease, 1 is alive with disease progression, and 6 died due to the tumor. Recurrence in the treatment field was not observed and the 3-year locoregional control rate was 82%. Severe acute radiotoxicity was not observed, but 1 patient had narrowing of the aorta and asymptomatic vertebral compression fracture at 28 years after PBT, and hair loss was prolonged in one patient.ConclusionPBT may be a better alternative to photon radiotherapy for children with advanced neuroblastoma, and may be conducted safely for patients with neuroblastoma that is difficult to manage using photon beams

Protective Efficacy of a Commercial β-hemolytic Streptococcus Vaccine for Japanese Flounder against Streptococcus iniae Infection of Threadsail Filefish
市販ヒラメ用β溶血性レンサ球菌症ワクチンがカワハギのS. iniae感染症に有効か否かを検討した。まず,攻撃方法を決定するためにカワハギ由来のS. iniaeを用いて人為感染試験を行った。その結果,筋肉接種法では 102 CFU/100 g 魚体重の攻撃菌数で死亡率は90%となった。一方,浸漬法では攻撃菌数108 CFU/mL,浸漬時間30分間でも死亡率は60%にとどまった。ワクチンの有効性試験では常用量およびその 1/10 量による免疫で有効性が確認された。常用量で免疫し,2 週間,1 か月,3 か月および 7 か月後に攻撃試験を行って予防効果を調べたところ,どの時点でも有効率(RPS)は80%以上であった。以上の結果から,ヒラメβ溶血性レンサ球菌症不活化ワクチンはカワハギのS. iniae感染症に有効であり,免疫効果が長期間持続することが示された。A commercial β-hemolytic Streptococcus vaccine for Japanese flounder was examined for the protective efficacy against Streptococcus iniae infection of threadsail filefish Stephanolepis cirrhifer. In the artificial infection test a high mortality rate (90%) was obtained by intramuscular inoculation with S. iniae as low as 102 CFU/100 g body weight. In the vaccination test intraperitoneal inoculation with the vaccine at the usual and 1/10 dosages resulted in a high protective effect (RPS≥85%), and the high protective efficacy was kept for at least 7 months
In Situ Experiments of Inverter-Controlled Snow-Melting Pipe System (interim Report)
As a traditional snow-melting pipe system on the road sprinkles underground water from holes of the pipe laid underground, serious problems occur: i.e. sinking of the ground surface and the lack of ground water in spring. The new pipe system can prevent these problems and will make it possible to construct the snow pipe sprinkler network for the wider area. An inverter-controlled new system is developed under collaboration of Nagaoka University of Technology, Nagaoka City and private companies. In the system, the pump is controlled by a snow intensity meter. In order to investigate the efficiency of the new system, several measuring instruments are set in the system such as the discharge meter, the snow intensity meter, the temperature meter and three sets of the digital camera. All the measured data are sent by the use of the Internet through ADSL. All data except for the image data are sampled at one-minute interval. The image data are sampled at ten minutes interval. Thus, the in situ experiment in town has been made possible.
