    Inverse electron-demand 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrile oxide with common nitriles leading to 3-functionalized 1,2,4-oxadiazoles

    A carbamoyl-substituted nitrile oxide was generated upon treatment of easily available 2-methyl-4-nitro-3-isoxazolin-5(2H)-one with THF (not dried); the reaction proceeded efficiently even in the absence of any special reagents and reaction conditions. The nitrile oxide caused 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with common aliphatic nitriles or electron-rich aromatic nitriles to afford 3-functionalized 1,2,4-oxadiazoles, which are expected to serve as precursors for the preparation of a variety of functional materials by the chemical transformation of the carbamoyl group. While conventional preparative methods for 1,2,4-oxadiazoles involve the cycloaddition of an electron-rich nitrile oxide with an electron-deficient nitrile or a nitrile activated by a Lewis acid, our method employs the complementary combination of an electron-rich nitrile and an electron-deficient nitrile oxide- the inverse electron-demand 1,3-cycloaddition. The DFT calculations using B3LYP 6-31G* supported the abovementioned inverse reactivity, and also suggested the presence of an accelerating effect by the carbamoyl group as a result of hydrogen bond formation with a dipolarophilic nitrile

    NOVEL SOLID-STATE ELECTROLYTES WITH IMPROVED ELECTRONIC PROPERTIES AS HYBRID IONICALLY CONDUCTING BATTERY MATERIALS

    As global energy consumption moves away from fossil fuel sources to alternative energy, the concern for energy storage is paramount. Through lithium ion batteries (LIBs), secondary battery storage has been secured for both large applications of electric vehicles, solar storage, and smaller items like personal cell phones and laptops. However, LIBs use flammable liquid electrolytes and due to engineering defects or dendritic short-circuits have the potential to swell, catch on fire, or even explode because of the volatile organic solvents within the battery. In the pursuit of new commercial lithium ion battery technologies that are safe, nonflammable, and highly conductive, solid-state electrolytes (SSE) are promising candidates for these critical innovations. To achieve SSEs with electrochemically and functionally desirable properties such as ease of manufacturing, good adherence to electrodes, and high ionic conductivities, continued efforts are devoted to improving electrolyte materials. The two main electrolyte types of interest are polymer electrolytes and ceramic electrolytes. Although polymer electrolytes have desirable physical flexibility to form good contact with electrode surfaces, they continually suffer from low ionic conductivities comparatively. Meanwhile ceramic electrolytes have high ionic conductivities (especially high cationic conductivities) but suffer from both poor electrode contact and brittleness. Single-ion conductive materials (like most ceramic conductors) are necessary to increase lifetime performance of batteries. An avenue to access these necessary attributes in LIB-SSEs is explored through novel boron-containing polymers and polymer-ceramic hybrids with the focus to synthesize a material with a high lithium transference number. By exploiting the Lewis basic nature of borane centers to form negatively charged polymer backbones, novel solid-state electrolytes were synthesized with the goal of creating only cation-conductive polymer networks by incorporating the anionic component within the polymer matrix. The synthesis, chemical and electrochemical characterization of these types of polymers and polymer-ceramic hybrids are analyzed by various techniques including x-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, nuclear magnetic spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and lithium transference number characterization.Chemistr

    A Critical Assessment of the Legal and Policy Frameworks for Combating Child Trafficking in the Southern African Development Community

    Child trafficking is a longstanding problem which affects victims and communities in various ways and therefore requires stern action both at the global and regional level. In the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, the crime is closely connected to the existing socio-economic challenges such as poverty; underdevelopment; lack of equal economic opportunities; HIV/AIDS; and human rights violations. As a result, SADC States are fertile sources, transit zones and destinations for child trafficking. It is internationally recognised that it is States such as those in the SADC region that require a comprehensive approach to prevent and prosecute the crime while simultaneously ensuring victim protection. To this effect, the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons Especially Women and Children is the primary instrument that seeks to provide such a comprehensive approach to child trafficking. Therefore, the current regional and national responses to child trafficking in most SADC States, are influenced by this Protocol. Despite these legislative and policy efforts to combat the crime, statistics show that in recent years child trafficking has been rapidly increasing in SADC. Thus, this research seeks to investigate why child trafficking remains prevalent in the region despite a plethora of measures against the crime. The research, therefore, assesses the effectiveness of the legal and policy measures taken by the SADC States to combat child trafficking using a qualitative approach involving analysis and interpretation of relevant legislation and policies. The primary focus is on the Trafficking Protocol as the main child trafficking instrument at the international level. The role of non-child trafficking instruments in the absence of a community instrument against the crime in SADC is also analysed. This research observes that the increasing child trafficking problem in the region is not mainly because of a lack of adequate legislation or policies but the lack of effective implementation of measures. Without a regional comprehensive and coordinated implementation approach, these measures remain weak and inadequate to fully combat child trafficking in the region. To this end, numerous legislative, policy, institutional and operational reform mechanisms to strengthen the subsisting measures against child trafficking in the region and areas for further research are recommended.Thesis (LLD) -- Faculty of Law, 202

    applicationOn seismic motion in the Nagano-basin, simulations were tried. Eigen value problems were solved by three-dimensioal finite element method. Underground structures were available from the existing data of explosion seismic observation of Nagano area. The models used in the analysis were 1 km deep and 20 km long, and were wide from 2 km to 10 km. The frequency of the 1-st mode calculated by the simulations and that of the amprification spectrum caluculated by the theory of multiple refrection had conciderable agreement. Using slip conditions at the boudary, where the existense of faults had been confirmed, the directivity of low frequency component of seismic motion in the Nagano-basin may be represented by the simulations.departmental bulletin pape
