Reactive 2-Quinolones Dearomatized by Steric Repulsion between 1-Methyl and 8-Substited Groups

Usual 1-methyl-2-quinolone (MeQone) derivatives are not reactive because of aromatic property in the heterocyclic ring. On the other hand, 8-substituted MeQones have been proved to be highly reactive, which is caused by steric repulsion between the 1-methyl and the 8-substituted groups. When 1-methyl-3,6,8-trinitro-2-quinolone was treated with potassium (or trimethylsilyl) cyanide, cyanation proceeded at the 4-position regioselectively as a result of cine-substitution. This reaction is initiated with addition of cyanide species, and the cyanoquinolone is formed by the protonation of the resultant anionic intermediate followed by elimination of nitrous acid. The high reactivity was maintained even when one of the nitro groups on the benzene moiety was replaced by a methyl group, which afforded corresponding cine-substituted products upon treatment with potassium cyanide

L2 Anxiety and self-efficacy : Redefining the relationship in the Japanese EFL context with reference to motivation, procrastination behavior, and L2 proficiency

This study aims to explore the relationship between L2 anxiety and self-efficacy beliefs and redefine that relationship in the Japanese EFL context with reference to L2 motivation, procrastination behavior, and L2 proficiency. A total of 1,019 Japanese EFL students participated in this study. Three hypotheses related to the research, as mentioned above, were examined using correlation, cluster analysis, and ANOVA analyses with post-hoc tests. The results indicated that 1) anxiety and self-efficacy were neither two sides of the same coin (i.e., they were not related), nor did they form a trade-off relationship in the Japanese EFL classroom context; 2) four distinct categories of students could be identified in terms of the levels of anxiety and self-efficacy; and 3) L2 behavioral variables such as L2 motivation (separately measured by motivated learning behavior and by investment in learning), active and passive procrastination behaviors, and L2 proficiency all uniquely differed within each group, thereby forming four distinct profiles of L2 learners in the context. Details of the profile for each group and a developmental sequence found among the groups are herein discussed. applicationSome aspects of Teaching English for Specific Purposes, especially English for Science and Technology were examined in order to improve English Education at a College of Technology. First, a survey of the reading classes was carried out in which research papers in English are used as a discussion material by professors of specialized courses. Second, some difficulties are discussed in teaching English for Science and Technology by a teacher of English who has virtually no knowledge of its background. Lastly, characteristics of an ideal material was examined for teaching EST to the students of Science and Technology major.
