Electrical resistivity of Al_{82.6-x}Re_{17.4}Si_x (7≼x≼12) 1/1-1/1-1/1 approximants was discussed in terms of their electronic structure near the Fermi level and the local atomic arrangements. Strong composition dependence of the electrical resistivity was observed for these 1/1-1/1/-1/1 approximants; samples with x=7, 9, and 12 show the Boltzmann-type electrical resistivity, while the others possess behaviors expected for system under the weak-localization.We found that the weak localization effect in the electrical resistivity, which is one of the characteristics of the corresponding Al-based quasicrystals, appears only when a condition of very low density of states with imperfections in the periodicity is satisfied. The Boltzmann-type behavior, on the other hand, takes place when one of the two factors, the very low density of states or the imperfection in the periodicity, is absent from the structure of the 1/1-1/1-1/1 approximant.journal articl

We report a unique method for the repair of atherosclerotic aneurysms of the distal aortic arch and the surgical results of this method. During the past 10 years, 34 patients have undergone repair of distal aortic arch aneurysms using temporary bypass graft at our institution; 31 elective procedures and 3 emergency procedures were performed. During aortic occlusion, distal perfusion was maintained through a temporary bypass which was usually created between the right axillary artery and the left external iliac artery. In 31 patients, aneurysms were repaired via left thoracotomy at the 4th intercostal space, and in the remaining 3 patients, a median sternotomy wifh left thoracotomy was used to approach the aneurysm because the aneurysm was in proximity to the orifice of the left common carotid artery. The aortic aneurysm was repaired by tube grafting in 29 patients, and by patch grafting in 5 patients. The mean ratio of lower extremity blood pressure to radial artery pressure during aortic occlusion was 0.69 (SE 0.19) in patients with temporary bypass using low porosity woven 14 mm Dacron grafts, and 0.86 (SE 0.09) in patients with the bypass using 16 mm knitted Dacron grafts (p<0.05). Postoperative complications included thalamic bleeding in 1 patient, pneumonia in 5 patients, acute renal failure in 1 patient, and paraplegia in 2 patients. Early surgical mortality within 30 postoperative days was 2.9% (n=1) and in-hospital mortality was 8.8% (n=3). The cause of early postoperative death was graft infection subsequent to postoperative pneumonia. The surgical results from temporary bypass grafts are comparable to results obtained with cardiopulmonary bypass reported in the recent Japanese literature.journal articl

Improvement in the assessment of wear of total knee replacements using coordinate-measuring machine techniques

    Get PDF
Total joint replacement is one of the most common elective surgical procedures performed worldwide, with an estimate of 1.5×106 operations performed annually. Currently joint replacements are expected to function for 10–15 years; however, with an increase in life expectancy, and a greater call for knee replacement due to increased activity levels, there is a requirement to improve their function to offer longer-term improved quality of life for patients. Wear analysis of total joint replacements has long been an important means in determining failure mechanisms and improving longevity of these devices. The effectiveness of the coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) technique for assessing volumetric material loss during simulated life testing of a replacement knee joint has been proved previously by the present authors. The purpose of the current work is to present an improvement to this method for situations where no pre-wear data are available. To validate the method, simulator tests were run and gravimetric measurements taken throughout the test, such that the components measured had a known wear value. The implications of the results are then discussed in terms of assessment of joint functionality and development of standardized CMM-based product standards. The method was then expanded to allow assessment of clinically retrieved bearings so as to ascertain a measure of true clinical wear

Performance Evaluation of a Dynamic Resolution Control Scheme for Video Traffic in Media-Synchronized Multimedia Communications

This paper studies a congestion control scheme in integrated variable bit-rate video, audio and data (e. g. , image or text) communications, where each video stream is synchronized with the corresponding audio stream. When the audio and video streams are output, media synchronization control is performed. To avoid congestion, we employ a dynamic video resolution control scheme which dynamically changes the video encoding rate according to the network loads. By simulation, the paper evaluates the performance of the scheme in terms of throughput, loss rate, average delay, and mean square error of synchronization. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the scheme.application/pdfjournal articl
