<Original Article> Tumor Necrosis Factor Stimulates Acetyltransferase Activity of Human Neutrophils

    Get PDF
Of the five cytokines tested (tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 1, colony-stimulating factor, interferon alpha, beta, and gamma), only tumor necrosis factor (TNF) showed a potent stimulatory effect on acetyltransferase activity of human neutrophils. Acetyltransforase is a key enzyme for the production of platelet-activating factor. This potentiating effect of TNF was time- and dose-dependent and was effectively blocked by TNF antiserum. Intracellular Ca++ elevation, protein kinase C activation, and arachidonic acid metabolites appeared not to be involved in the TNF-induced potentiation of the acetyltransferase activity in neutrophils.journal articl

Geometry and electronic structure of magic iron oxide clusters

    Get PDF
The magic iron oxide cluster Fe13O8 is found by using a reactive laser vaporized cluster source. From first-principles calculations, the equilibrium geometry is determined to be of D4h symmetry. Comparing with Fe13O6, Fe12O9, and Fe14O7, Fe13O8 has a closed electron configuration in highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), a large gap of HOMO-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, and large binding energy, which suggest that it is most stable, confirming our experimental observation. The main interaction between oxygen and iron atoms in the cluster is the hybridization between O-2p and Fe-3d orbitals. The electronic structure and magnetic properties for this magic iron oxide cluster are discussed in detail.application/pdfjournal articl

Geometry and electronic structures of magic transition-metal oxide clusters M9O6 (M=Fe, Co, and Ni)

    Get PDF
The magic oxide clusters M9O6 (M5Fe, Co, Ni) are found by using reactive laser vaporized cluster source. From the first-principles calculations, the possible equilibrium geometries for these three oxide clusters are determined to be a C2v symmetry, where the skeleton composed of 9 metal atoms also has C2v symmetry, different from the equilibrium structures of pure transition metal cluster M9 . The O atoms are energetically more favorable to cap the triangle surfaces. In Fe9O6 and Co9O6 clusters, oxygen atoms are antiferromagnetically polarized while ferromagnetically polarized in the Ni9O6 cluster, similar to the case of O atoms adsorbed on the reconstructed Ni(110) surface. The magnetic behaviors are explained from electronic structures.application/pdfjournal articl

Numerical examination on frequency division characteristics of photonic crystal waveguide by FDTD method

    Get PDF
In the past few years, there have been tremendous activities in the fabrication and testing of crystals from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. It is important for designing optical functional devices to clarify fundamental properties of basic crystal waveguides, such as the straight waveguide, direction coupler, microcavity and so on. Two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) waveguide with the microcavity is examined numerically by FDTD method. We use an absorbing boundary condition (ABC) at the edge of the window called Mur's ABC. The structure of the PC is the triangular array and the microcavity is made by removing the several crystals in parallel with the PC waveguide. The effects of the number of removed pillars and the radius of the surrounding pillars on the resonance are examined. From the numerical results, we show that resonance frequency can be determined by adjusting the number of removed pillars and the radius of the surrounding pillars. Also, the structure which takes out the light is examined from the practical point of view.departmental bulletin pape

Numerical Examination of Fiber Bragg Grating by FDTD

    Get PDF
Optical fiber has made a big revolution in telecommunication systems. This optical technology involving lots of components has to be working together. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is one of components involved in optical telecommunication technology. The existence of FBG is needed when an optical fiber amplifier and filter are used. FBG can be used as band reject filter or band pass filter for optical devices. It is important to examine the characteristics of FBG for the design of the practical use. This paper aims to simulate and analyze the design of FBG to determine its output characteristic. Simulation and analyzing process of FBG structure are using Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) methods. It is assumed that FBG is 2 dimensional periodic structures in this research, where a single mode can propagate. Analysis of FBG structure shows that FBG output characteristic affected by design parameter. Grating refractive index and grating periods are the parameters that affect the output characteristics, while the grating refractive index shape does not. It is found that the larger refractive index will occur in wider reflected frequency and larger reflectance result. The longer grating periods affect in lower reflected frequency. The analysis also shows that the correlation between grating periods and reflected frequency is not in linear correlation.departmental bulletin pape

Production and Sales of the Ethanol for the Vehicle Fuel Using the Biomass in Mie Prefecture

application/pdfThe abandoned cultivated land is in the agricultural land district in Mie Prefecture and there is 1,085ha (As of 08 years) now. This is an area of 26th place in the whole country. Moreover, there is an economic discrepancy in Mie Prefecture in the northern part, central part, and the southern part. The northern part develops the commerce and industry and is lively. On the other hand, the southern part is a center the primary industry, and has declined economically. Then, whether it sold it making the product that made local crops a raw material to attempt regional revitalization was examined. Whether manufacturing the ethanol was possible from the sweet sorghum that was able to be grown in Mie Prefecture was verified. Moreover, whether the business that sold the ethanol as an automotive fuel was possible was verified.departmental bulletin pape

In the past few years, there have been termendous activities in the fabrication and resting of crystals from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. It is important for designing optical functional devices to clarify fundamental properties of basic crystal waveguides, such as the straight waveguide, direction coupler, microcavity and so on. Two dimension photonic crystal (PC) structure with micro cavity is examined by using the FDTD method. In this thesis, two-dimensional structure is considered and the case of an E-polarized wave is examined. The structure to be combined Y shaped waveguide with the maicro cavity is proposed as the structure of the PC. We use an absorbing boundary condition (ABC) at the edge of the window called Mur's ABC. The electric field at the waveguide port is observed, and the spectral distribution is calculated by using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Moreover, when the number of micro cavities increases, some numerical examination is performed.departmental bulletin pape
