Hospital ward nurses’ work engagement and its relationship with work-life balance
This study aimed to clarify the levels and factors of hospital ward nurses’ work engagement (WE) and analyze its relationship with work-life balance (WLB). An anonymous, self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted by mail with hospital ward nurses in four prefectures in the Tokai region of Japan. Personal attributes, the Japanese Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, and part of the Nursing Work-Life Balance Index (N-WLBI) Survey by the Japanese Nursing Association (2017) were used as survey items. T-tests, one-way analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. The significance level was 5% on both sides, and SPSS Statistics 25.0 for Windows was used for statistical analysis. Out of 3,008 completed questionnaire (response rate 44.5%), 2,683 (89.2%) had valid responses, and the analysis target comprised 2,017 people. Factors of high WE were a few hospital beds, having an occupational position, being married, having children, high subjective health status, just the right amount of work, being willing to continue working, and not completing night shifts. There was a positive correlation between WE and WLB (r = .462, p < .001), and the two variables of “career ability development” (β = .385) and “management attitude” (β = .129) had an influence on WE. Although WE increased with the years of experience, it was overall low, indicating that proficient nurses cannot work with enthusiasm, especially from their second year onward. Meanwhile, the findings suggested that WE may be improved by adjusting WLB. departmental bulletin pape
Effects of a Classroom-Based Stress Management Program by Cognitive Reconstruction for Elementary School Students
Background: The present study evaluates the effects of a classroom-based universal program for stress management among elementary school students. Methods: The participating children (aged 11-12 years) were assigned to either an intervention (n = 172) or a control group (n = 100). The program involved one 45-minute session during school hours. The program taught students about cognitive distortions and trained them using cognitive reconstruction. Cognitive distortions were characterized so that children could easily understand them. Students were asked to complete the Children’s Stress Response Test, comprised of five questions about self-efficacy about cognitive reconstruction before and after the program, to assess the program’s effects. Results: The results as observed in the intervention group were as follows: (a) stress responses decreased, (b) self-efficacy in the awareness about one’s feelings and thinking improved, (c) understanding how thinking affects feelings was prompted, (d) self-efficacy to review one’s thinking improved when they felt uncomfortable, and (e) self-efficacy to change one’s negative thinking to adaptive thinking improved. Conclusion: These results suggest that the program was useful for reducing stress responses and improving self-efficacy in cognitive reconstruction among children.journal articl

Development of Performance Evaluation System for Low Power Wide Area Network using LoRaWAN
IoT (Internet of Things) has been focused as a network connecting all kinds of things. Since things are located in various environments including outdoors and rural as well as mountainous areas, a network employed in IoT cannot depend on commercially available power supply. Low power battery operation and wireless communication covering wide area are key requirements. A network that satisfies these requirements is called LPWA (Low-Power Wide-Area), where multiple specifications are proposed. Among them LoRaWAN is one of the most promising technologies and its deployment is expanding rapidly. As LoRaWAN employs Chirp Spread Spectrum for its Physical layer, there are a number of parameters and their tradeoffs. Since a user has to select the most suitable set of parameters for his own application, a system that can evaluate the performance of LoRaWAN is required. This paper describes the development of the performance evaluation system using LoRaWAN and preliminary results on the performance of LoRaWAN.departmental bulletin pape

Loss of Apelin Augments Angiotensin II-Induced Cardiac Dysfunction and Pathological Remodeling
Apelin is an inotropic and cardioprotective peptide that exhibits beneficial effects through activation of the APJ receptor in the pathology of cardiovascular diseases. Apelin induces the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in failing hearts, thereby improving heart function in an angiotensin 1–7-dependent manner. Whether apelin antagonizes the over-activation of the renin–angiotensin system in the heart remains elusive. In this study we show that the detrimental effects of angiotensin II (Ang II) were exacerbated in the hearts of aged apelin-gene-deficient mice. Ang II-mediated cardiac dysfunction and hypertrophy were augmented in apelin knockout mice. The loss of apelin increased the ratio of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) to ACE2 expression in the Ang II-stressed hearts, and Ang II-induced cardiac fibrosis was markedly enhanced in apelin knockout mice. mRNA expression of pro-fibrotic genes, such as transforming growth-factor beta (TGF-β) signaling, were significantly upregulated in apelin knockout hearts. Consistently, treatment with the ACE-inhibitor Captopril decreased cardiac contractility in apelin knockout mice. In vitro, apelin ameliorated Ang II-induced TGF-β expression in primary cardiomyocytes, accompanied with reduced hypertrophy. These results provide direct evidence that endogenous apelin plays a crucial role in suppressing Ang II-induced cardiac dysfunction and pathological remodeling
