The relation between ball juggling skills and dribbling, shooting skills in soccer

This study aimed to clarify whether university students with high-level soccer juggling skills also have high-level dribbling and shooting skills. The participants were 76 male university students who were not members of the soccer club. They underwent ball juggling, zigzag dribbling, and instep kick shooting tests. Using the test results, the participants were classified into three groups according to juggling skill level. The analysis results showed that the group with high-level juggling skills had significantly higher zigzag dribbling skills. In addition, despite finding no significant differences, the group with high-level juggling skills tended to have high-level instep kick shooting skills.departmental bulletin pape

A Randomized Placebo-controlled Trial of an Oral Preparation of High Molecular Weight Fucoidan in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes with Evaluation of Taste Sensitivity

[Background] Fucoidan is derived from seaweed widely used in Japanese cuisine, but little is known about its influence on glucose metabolism. To obtain information about the physiological effects of fucoidan on glucose metabolism, the digestive system, and the gustatory system controlling taste sensation in patients with type 2 diabetes, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. [Methods] Thirty patients with type 2 diabetes on diet therapy were recruited from an outpatient clinic (22 men and 8 women aged 59.10 ± 13.24 years, body mass index: 25.18 ± 3.88, hemoglobin A1c: 7.04 ± 1.24%). They were divided into 2 groups and underwent 2 interventions with a 4-week interval. One group received fucoidan for 12 weeks (a daily 60 mL test beverage containing 1,620 mg of fucoidan) and then placebo (60 mL) for the subsequent 12-week period, while the order was reversed in the other group. Evaluation was performed just before and after each intervention. Taste sensitivity was measured for 5 basic tastes by the filter paper disk method and food intake was evaluated with a validated diet questionnaire. [Results] No adverse events occurred during the study period. Despite no change of the diet, stool frequency increased during fucoidan intake (from 7.78 ± 4.64/week in Week 1 to 9.15 ± 5.03/week in Week 5, P < 0.001), and it increased more in lean subjects. In 11 subjects whose stool frequency exceeded the mean value, the thresholds for sweet, salty, bitter and umami tastes were significantly reduced (enhancement of sensitivity) after fucoidan intake. In 14 subjects with normal HOMA-IR (homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance, < 2.5), hemoglobin A1c decreased after fucoidan intake (from 6.73 ± 1.00 to 6.59 ± 1.00%, P < 0.05), as did the fasting plasma level of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1, from 6.42 ± 3.52 to 4.93 ± 1.88 pmol/L, P < 0.05). [Conclusion] Sustained fucoidan intake led to alterations of gastrointestinal function, including increased stool frequency and enhanced taste sensitivity, which could contribute to better control of diabetes.journal articl

Relationship Between Physical Fitness／Motor Ability and Standing Height of Adolescent Boys (13- and 16-Years-01d) Examined Using the Regression Method Developed by Nakayama (1980)

The relationships between height and elements of physical fitness were examined using the regression method developed by Nakayama （1980） which was based on data provided by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture in 1964. Changes in estimated values over time, which were obtained through substituting height into the predictive formula developed by Nakayama, and similar changes in other mean values were examined from data gathered between 1978 and 1992. Records of 13-year-old and 16-year-old boys were as follows： （1）Indices of 13-year-old boys for the vertical jump and long jump were almost consistently between 105 and 110, whereas the indices of the 1500m run, 50m run, and running long jump were around 100. These results indicated that changes over time did not exist and these indices improved compared to the standing-height increase, or that these indices developed to a greater degree than height increased. （2）The indices of standing trunk flexion of 13-year-old boys showed a large decrease from 90 to 60, and trunk flexibility and ball throwing ability demonstrated continuous decline from 1978 to 1992. The changes in indices of trunk flexibility and trunk strength over time were not in accordance with the increase in standing height. （3）In 16-year-old boys, the indices of vertical jump and 50-m run were around 100 and no changes over time were identified. Therefore, these variables were linked to the increase in standing height or seen as developing to a greater degree than height increased. （4）In 16 year-old boys, the index of back strength was less than 90 and showed decline over time.application/pdfdepartmental bulletin pape

Release and establishment of Bathyplectes anurus (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), an introduced natural enemy of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in Miyazaki, Japan

Alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica, a serious pest of Chinese milk vetch, Astragalus sinicus, in paddy fields, was accidentally established in Miyazaki prefecture in 1986 to 1987. Since 1998, alfalfa weevil has been the target of biological control efforts in this prefecture. Although cocoons of the effective natural enemy, Bathyplecles anurus, were released several times from 1999 to 2006, the parasitoid failed to colonize because of some unfavorable condition. In 2007, a total of 16,000 B. anurus cocoons were released in three alfalfa fields, three communities of bush vetch, Vicia angustifolia, and two Chines milk vetch fields. In spring 2008, considerable numbers of B. anurus cocoons were recorded in Aya Town and Kobayashi City, suggesting successful establishment of the parasitoid in Miyazaki in 2007. We discuss some issues around synchronization of life cycles of H. postica and B. anurus, and the evaluation of percentage para iti m of B. anurus.アルファルファタコゾウムシは蜜源植物であるレンゲを食害する侵入害虫で, わが国では1982年, 福岡県と沖縄県で最初に発見された. 宮崎県では1986-1987年頃その被害が顕在化し, 以後, 甚大な被害を与え続けている. 本害虫の密度を抑える目的で同県では1998年～2006年, 数回に亘って導入天敵ヨーロッパトビチビアメバチが放飼された. しかし, その定着の有無は未確認の状態が続いている. 2007年2- 3月, 筆者らは放飼場所を再検討し, 16,000頭の同天敵をアルファルファ圃場やカラスノエンドウ群落等8筒所に放飼した. 2008年春の調査において, すべての放飼地点で放飼世代の孫世代の発生を確認した. とくに綾町と小林市における孫世代の寄生率 (95%信頼区間) は それぞれ7.4～17.6%と3.7～10.9%で, 両地方におけるヨーロッパトビチビアメバチの定着が強く示唆された. また, 筆者らはヨーロッパトビチビアメバチのアルファルファタコゾウムシに対する寄生率を評価する際, 両種の生活環における同調性の問題が無視できないことを指摘した.departmental bulletin pape
