Living the security city: Karachi’s archipelago of enclaves
Like many of the enclaves used by elites and foreign visitors in this troubled megacity of over 20 million, the Karachi Sheraton Hotel is increasingly fortified off from its immediate environment. Blast walls, checkpoints, surveillance systems, and armies of police and security guards continually work to try and control how the hotel’s commodious internal spaces relate to an outside street deemed deeply insecure and prone to unpredictable moments of violence. Today, a widespread logic of military securitization—which Stephen Graham has termed the “new military urbanism”—exists in many of the world’s cities, even those that are not formal war zones. In those cities, an obsession with attaining total security—especially around financial centers, ports, residential areas, embassy districts, and mega events—results in the generalization of the kind of passage-point architectures most familiar from airports to everyday urban landscapes. Enclaves such as those surrounding the Karachi Sheraton Hotel have emerged in response to heightened perceptions of vulnerability within a wider city wrecked by murderous violence. But it is important to look beyond the already familiar physical architectures of enclaved cities per se. By focusing merely on the physical architectures of securitized cities—their fortified walls, checkpoints, and barriers—risks an environmentally deterministic perspective suggesting that these constructions work completely or that their effects can be assumed from their appearance. Complex interconnections between gated enclaves and the rest of the city are easily overlooked. This is especially so when it becomes clear that immense and ongoing labor is required to even create the pretense that relations between the inside of enclaves and the broader city can ever be fully scrutinized and filtered within huge, dynamic, and highly mobilemegacities. In what follows, our discussion will center on the dynamic relationships between those who perform and work the boundaries of enclaves and those who live and use enclaved spaces. We will concern ourselves with the neglected question of how the transformation of megacity landscapes into uneven patchworks of securitized enclaves work to produce novel experiences and forms of urban political life. Post-fracture Rehabilitation Effects on Brain Function in Older People
[Background] Deterioration of cognitive function is an underlying cause of older people’s fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate electroencephalogram and cognitive function in patients hospitalized with fractures, both at admission (before intervention) and at the time of discharge (after intervention), to investigate the effects of rehabilitation on brain function. [Methods] A total of 24 patients hospitalized with fracture due to a fall were enrolled in this study. All the subjects received 140 minutes of rehabilitation every day during hospitalization. Touch Panel-type Dementia Assessment Scale (TDAS) was used to test their cognitive function. In electroencephalography (EEG), the Neuronal Activity Topography (NAT) system was used to calculate the “Alzheimer’s disease (AD) - normal controls (NLc) differential similarity” in sNAT, ie, a numerical index to show the proximity to AD or normal NLc. [Results] There was no significant difference in the total TDAS score among subjects who were examined before and after intervention, but 12 subjects who were observed with deterioration of cognitive functionat at before intervention had a significant improvement in “word-recognition,” a sub-item in TDAS (P < 0.05). In addition, the NAT analysis findings showed that the differential similarity in sNAT significantly approached the NLc pattern (P < 0.05). [Conclusion] EEGs in patients with fractures resulting from a fall became more similar to NL patterns at the time of discharge. Report of an Attempt to Visualize the Value of the Starry Sky and Potential as a Regional Resource
Under the activity of “Hoshinochi lab" aiming for collaboration across barrier between different organizations, we studied the possibility of “starry sky" as a regional resource creating a new added value. The purpose of the study is to make a proposal that leads to the improvement of regional vitality for the next generation based on the effects observed by visualization of the value of starry sky. Here, "visualization" has a various meaning from physical measurement of value of starry sky based on night sky brightness to activities making people conscious the wide variety of value of starry sky.
