The matrilineal transmission of maternal behavior has been reported in several species. Studies, primarily on rats, have suggested the importance of postnatal experience and the involvement of epigenetic mechanisms in mediating these transmissions. This study aims to determine whether the matrilineal transmission of maternal behavior occurs in mice and whether the microbiota is involved. We first observed that early weaned (EW) female mice showed lower levels of maternal behavior, particularly licking/grooming (LG) of their own pups, than normally weaned (NW) female mice. This difference in maternal behavioral traits was also observed in the second generation, even though all mice were weaned normally. In the subsequent cross-fostering experiment, the levels of LG were influenced by the nurturing mother but not the biological mother. Finally, we transplanted the fecal microbiota from EW or NW mice into germ-free (GF) mice raising pups. The maternal behaviors that the pups exhibited toward their own offspring after growth were analyzed, and the levels of LG in GF mice colonized with microbiota from EW mice were lower than those in GF mice colonized with microbiota from NW mice. These results clearly indicate that, among maternal behavioral traits, LG is intergenerationally transmitted in mice and suggest that the vertical transmission of microbiota is involved in this process. This study demonstrates the universality of the intergenerational transmission of maternal behavioral traits and provides new insights into the role of microbiota.journal articl

DEVELOPMENT OF NEWEST TEACHING MATERIALS FOR SURVEY EDUCATION BASED ON PRESENT SURVEY EDUCATION AND SURVEYOR LICENSE SYSTEM

当該学校で測量学に関する科目を修めて卒業した者は,申請により国土地理院から無試験で測量士補を取得でき,さらに実務経験を積めば無試験で測量士を取得できるようになっている.学校での測量学は,本来ならその資格に見合う内容を教育する必要があると思われる.そこで,測量の資格制度と教育実態の現状から見て学校教育で補うべき課題を調査・検討したところ,測量士(補)試験項目と同様の指導内容や難易度,公共測量作業規程に準拠した内容,あたらしい技術,数学教育などを摘出した.これらの課題に対し,一般に広く発行される教材を通して解決を試みた.本論では,測量の資格制度と教育実態を踏まえたあたらしい測量学教材の開発について述べる.The assistant surveyor license could be given to graduate students of designated higher education with fulfill the credit requirements for survey-related coursework, without any specific examination. Furthermore, the surveyor license as the upper grade is given without examination when fulfill the requirement based on their survey experiences. The license should be generally provided for the contents of survey education. Evaluating the content and quality of survey education, some problems were identified from the viewpoints of effective education. The problems includes disciplines and standard, the contents that referenced operation specifications for public surveys, the new surveying technology, the education of mathematics, and so on. The new teaching materials were studied and developed to overcome these problems, and then the material was newly published as a 253-page textbook in 2014. This paper describes the development of the newest survey teaching materials, through present circumstance of survey education and surveyor license system

Shootin1: a protein involved in the organization of an asymmetric signal for neuronal polarization

Neurons have the remarkable ability to polarize even in symmetrical in vitro environments. Although recent studies have shown that asymmetric intracellular signals can induce neuronal polarization, it remains unclear how these polarized signals are organized without asymmetric cues. We describe a novel protein, named shootin1, that became up-regulated during polarization of hippocampal neurons and began fluctuating accumulation among multiple neurites. Eventually, shootin1 accumulated asymmetrically in a single neurite, which led to axon induction for polarization. Disturbing the asymmetric organization of shootin1 by excess shootin1 disrupted polarization, whereas repressing shootin1 expression inhibited polarization. Overexpression and RNA interference data suggest that shootin1 is required for spatially localized phosphoinositide-3-kinase activity. Shootin1 was transported anterogradely to the growth cones and diffused back to the soma; inhibiting this transport prevented its asymmetric accumulation in neurons. We propose that shootin1 is involved in the generation of internal asymmetric signals required for neuronal polarization.journal articl

Study on effective teaching methods of a technical subject "Hydraulics" for students in the agricultural course

Recently, in agricultural engineering courses of both several Private and National Universities, it is remarkable that students who passed some entrance examinations by using mainly Biology subject in Science subjects have been increasing. It is necessary to study how teachers affiliated with those courses educate these students about the technical subject "Hydraulics", one of Physics subject, by effective teaching methods. The investigation of educational teaching conditions of "Hydraulics" was done for four Private Universities; Kitasato University, Tokyo University of Agriculture, Nihon University, and Meiji University, and one National University of Miyazaki. There are various subject names concerning "Hydraulics", and the basic subjects of them are situated at the first semester of second year, and the applied subjects are at the second semester of second year or third year. In spite of the department or the course accredited by JABEE, "Hydraulics" has been made as either "Elective subject" or "Compulsory subject". The contents of technical textbooks used in three Universities are ranged from "Ordinary" to "Easy" in the difficulty's rank, and at their lectures, the assistant technical information are distributed for students. In case of using no textbook with enough technical contents, teachers often make some devices to distribute the special assistant-technical information, and tried many practices for some public service examinations, for students. As the preparation to write a Hydraulics textbook, we studied the detailed contents on 30 Hydraulics textbooks, and selected the textbook's model with content from "Ordinary" to "Easy" in the difficulty's rank, and then made the chapter and the detailed contents. Based on these principles, we, 6 teachers, started to write it on September 2009, and then the book titled "Hydraulics for Agricultural course" was published 1,500 copies with B5 size and 186 pages on June 2010. It was the best way in this time to publish this textbook while thinking about various characteristics and future course trends of the agricultural course students.農業工学系学科では生物学で受験する学生が最近多くなってきており,物理系の専門科目｢水理学｣をどのように効果的に教育指導すべきか検討する必要がある. 水理学指導の実態を私立4大学と国立の宮崎大学とで調査した結果,科目名は相違するが基礎系水理学が2年前期に,応用系水理学が2年後期から3年次に配置され,JABEE認定学科･コースであっても必修科目と選択科目に分かれていた. 使用教科書は難易度で普通から易の内容のものであり,補助的に資料も配布していた. 適当な内容の教科書がない理由で自作資料を用い,理解を深めるために講義内容を工夫し演習問題を多用し公務員受験にも配慮している. また,解り易い教科書を執筆するために,30冊の水理学教科書の内容を精査し,難易度で普通から易の内容のある教科書モデルを選定し,それを例として執筆する章･目次･項目･内容の精選を具体的に行った. この方針に基づき2009年9月から6名で分担して執筆を開始し, 2010年6月にB5判, 186ページの｢農学系の水理学｣を1,500部発行した. 現時点では,農学系学生の特徴･動向に考慮して教科書を発行したことは,最良の選択であった.departmental bulletin pape
