Comparative Study of Basin-Based Wastewater Management for Industrial Pollution Control in Upper Citarum River Basin, West Java, Indonesia

    Get PDF
Industrial sector in the Upper Citarum River Basin (UCRB), as one of the major basins in Indonesia, has own very rapidly to support national economic growth. Various industries grow in the basin such as textile, food and metal manufacturing industries. Land conversion for industries has increased about 35% in 2002 compared with that in 1993 (Wangsaatmaja, 2004). Consequently, this development has given a huge impact on quality of water bodies due to the discharge of industrial pollutant. A basin-based wastewater management (BBWM) approach has been conducted in the previous paper (Suharyanto & Matsushita, 2008). Herein, a similar study is conducted in this paper with respect to the industrial wastewater. The aim of this study is to investigate a BBWM approach dealing with for industrial pollution control in the UCRB. A comparative analysis of BBWM in three different countries: Japan, The Netherlands, and Indonesia is incorporated in the study. Both Japanese & Dutch systems are welldeveloped in terms of structural and non-structural measures in dealing with pollution from industrial sector. On the other hand, current industrial pollution in the UCRB shows a high threat on surface water quality due to uncontrolled wastewater discharge from various industries. A large proportion of pollutant load from industries has been indicated. The study suggests that the UCRB should consider achieving a well-combination of structural and non-structural measures. High coverage of structural and non-structural measures through an increase in a number of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) together with an increase in treatment performance bring about a better effect on pollutant reduction as indicated from Japan and The Netherlands’ cases. Efforts should be undertaken to dwindle the gap in the shortage of proper structural and non-structural measures. Additionally, design of future comprehensive BBWM needs to be formulated for better management of industrial wastewater in the UCRB by analyzing all aspects related to structural and non-structural measures in the total basin perspective. The cluster system analysis would be highly indispensable for further study in which analysis of industrial zones is incorporated.conference pape

European elections in the Italian web sphere: campaigning 2.0?

    Get PDF
This article investigates the use of web 2.0 during the European elections campaign in Italy. The research was articulated in two phases: an analysis of candidates\u2019 websites and use of web 2.0 tools, on the one hand, and the monitoring of the campaign within social media (Facebook and YouTube). Though a persisting divide exists in the distribution of parties and coalitions online, most candidates who have a personal website have integrated web 2.0 tools. It is seemingly a strategic appropriation and adaptation of web 2.0, resulting in a hybrid communication model, in between 1.0 and 2.0. The campaigning activity on social media, instead, seems innovative insofar as it enables a re- embedding and re-localization of previously centralized and nationally coordinated campaigns

Children’s digital skills acquisition in non-formal educational contexts: Pedagogical practices, learning, and inclusion opportunities in coding and robotics workshops.

    Get PDF
Coding and robotics education has drawn a lot of interest in recent years to get children ready for the future labour market and advance their digital skills. This paper focuses on coding and robotics workshops in non-formal educational settings in Belgium, Denmark, and Italy. Building on data from a comparative/cross-national study, we will present findings from 16 observations of such workshops followed by 11 interviews with the organisers and moderators with the purpose of investigating their pedagogical practices, learning and inclusion opportunities. Findings of this study suggest that while digital skills workshops in non-formal learning contexts are designed and implemented with the goal of encouraging children's collaboration and active participation, the structure of the learning activities, the organization of the learning environment, and the choices made by children themselves may promote individualistic practices. Furthermore, despite attempts to encourage diversity and inclusion, such as choosing a "free" and "open-door" approach, these workshops may fail to attract participants from diverse backgrounds. We argue that an active dialogue between organisers and moderators, researchers, parents, and, of course, children from various backgrounds is required to promote child-centered approaches that move beyond individualistic accounts of learning and toward the creation of more collaborative and inclusive digital skill activities through a systemic and holistic approach

departmental bulletin pape

This study evaluated the relationship between the Human Resource Management Practices (HRMP) and employee commitment. Results based on a sample from Mnquma Local Municipality indicate that these practices have a significant impact on employee commitment. This project will help to advance research on exploring the influence of organisational variables on commitment. Research purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of human resources management practices on employee commitment at Mnquma Local Municipality. Motivation for the study: The study examines HRMP and employee commitment in the public sector. The relationship between the two may be of value to the municipality’s success. Research approach, design and method: A quantitative research approach was followed to carry out this study. Data were collected from a sample of 137 respondents in a selected municipality (Mnquma Local Municipality). A self-administered questionnaire was sent to respondents. Main findings: A significant relationship was found between HRMP and employee commitment. Practical or managerial implications: Findings may be relevant to practitioners, including strategic management researchers, policy-makers, directors, managers, and supervisors. The study could assist various practitioners directly or indirectly involved in private and public organisations to develop HRMP that improves employee commitment. Contribution or value-add: The study adds to the literature on HRMP and employee commitment among the public service.Thesis (MCom) -- Faculty of Management and Commerce, 201
