First-principles calculations of Cu adsorption on an H-terminated Si surface

In this study, we use first-principles simulations to study the adsorption of copper onto H-terminated and partially OH-terminated silicon surfaces. We show that, in contrast to previous studies, copper adsorbs strongly to the H-terminated silicon surface and that the adsorption energy is significantly dependent on the localbonding environment. The addition of a hydroxide group increases the average adsorption energy while reducing the range of adsorption energies due to the strong interaction between copper and oxygen. Our results predict that copper will generally prefer to adsorb at dihydride sites on the surface, agreeing with experimentalstudies of copper nucleation. The adsorption energy hierarchy predicted by the calculations strongly supports the suggestion that copper acts as a micromask in wet chemical etching, blocking reactive sites.journal articl

application/pdfAn extract of Hatakeshimeji (Lyophyllum decastes Sing.) was orally administrated once to male and female mice and to male mice for 20 weeks. We macroscopically observed general symptoms, the presence or absence of death during a dose period, and the presence or absence of abnormality upon completion. Results suggest that the general observation of symptoms and increase of weight were unchanged and no death or abnormal findings were present at autopsy. In addition, the extract of Hatakeshimeji (2.88g) was administrated orally to 11 adults for two weeks during which we assessed its safety by conducting blood tests, urine tests, and blood pressure and body measurement checks. Consequently, there were no clinical problems observed with regard to blood test results, hepatic and renal functions, glucose and lipid metabolisms, and blood pressure. Likewise, analysis of agaritine from hot-water extracts of Hatakeshimeji showed no such problems. These results suggest that the extract of Hatakeshimeji is a safe food and may perform some health functions.

Surrounding Gastric Mucosa Findings Facilitate Diagnosis of Gastric Neoplasm as Gastric Adenoma or Early Gastric Cancer

Background and Aim. It is difficult to master the skill of discriminating gastric adenoma from early gastric cancer by conventional endoscopy or magnifying endoscopy combined with narrow-band imaging, because the colors and morphologies of these neoplasms are occasionally similar. We focused on the surrounding gastric mucosa findings in order to determine how to discriminate between early gastric cancer and gastric adenoma by analyzing the characteristics of the gastric background mucosa. Methods. We retrospectively examined 146 patients who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection for gastric neoplasm between October 2009 and January 2015. The boundary of atrophic gastritis was classified endoscopically according to the Kimura-Takemoto classification system. Of 146 lesions, 63 early gastric cancers and 21 gastric adenomas were ultimately evaluated and assessed. Results. Almost all gastric adenomas were accompanied by open-type gastritis, whereas 47 and 16 early gastric cancers were accompanied by open-type and closed-type gastritis, respectively (p = 0.037). Conclusions. The evaluation of the boundary of atrophic gastritis associated with gastric neoplasms appears to be useful for discrimination between early gastric cancer and gastric adenoma. When gastric neoplasm is present in the context of surrounding localized gastric atrophy, gastric cancer is probable but not certain.Citation: Miike T, Yamamoto S, Miyata Y, Hirata T, Noda Y, Noda T, Suzuki S, Takeda S, Natsuda S, Sakaguchi M, Maemura K, Hashimoto K, Yamaji T, Abe H, Iwakiri H, Tahara Y, Hasuike S, Nagata K, Kitanaka A, Shimoda K.
