The author has attempted to do so-called communicative lectures during last year in which university is concerned with local communities and university students communicate with people living in the communities. Through the lectures, the author and students had pleasant opportunities to meet with many people in the communities and learn from them. After conducting the communicative lectures, my impression is that the Saitama University, as a national university which may have a significant influence on local communities, will play an important role in revitalizing or forming communities. Realization of the communicative lectures is deeply related to my past teaching activities. The author was attracted by superior thought of organic agriculture, and conducted lectures and seminars in which students experienced organic agriculture and thought of what organic agriculture is. The communicative lectures were conducted as follows last fiscal year; In the first semester, students arranged a walking tour of Minuma rice field with their guide. In the second semester, students made and presented a picture-story show. In addition, they visited the area polluted and damaged by the Ashio copper mines. Students actively participated in the lectures, and discovered the pleasure of communicating with people in the communities. They were led to consider on their own will what community ought to be. This paper points out that university, through communicative lectures, might assume a significant role of regaining a society which is gentle and friendly to human and nature.textapplication/pdfdepartmental bulletin pape

Observation of a Resonancelike Structure in the π^+-Ψ' Mass Distribution in Exclusive B → Kπ^+-Ψ' Decays

A distinct peak is observed in the π^±Ψ'invariant mass distribution near 4.43 GeV in B→ Kπ^±Ψ' decays. A fit using a Breit-Wigner resonance shape yields a peak mass and width of M = 4433± 4(stat)± 2(syst) MeV and Γ= 45\begin+18\-13\end(stat)\begin+30\-13\end(syst)MeV.The product branching fraction is determined to be B(B^0→ K^∓Z^±(4430)→ π^±Ψ')= (4.1±1.0(stat)±1.4(syst))×10^{-5}, where Z^±(4430)is used to denote the observed structure. The statistical significance of the observed peak is 6.5σ. These results are obtained from a 605 fb^{-1} data sample that contains 657 ×10^6 B\bar{B} pairs collected near the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e^+e^- collider.journal articl

Water Evaporation: A Transition Path Sampling Study

    No full text
We use transition path sampling to study evaporation in the SPC/E model of liquid water. On the basis of thousands of evaporation trajectories, we characterize the members of the transition state ensemble (TSE), which exhibit a liquid–vapor interface with predominantly negative mean curvature at the site of evaporation. We also find that after evaporation is complete, the distributions of translational and angular momenta of the evaporated water are Maxwellian with a temperature equal to that of the liquid. To characterize the evaporation trajectories in their entirety, we find that it suffices to project them onto just two coordinates: the distance of the evaporating molecule to the instantaneous liquid–vapor interface and the velocity of the water along the average interface normal. In this projected space, we find that the TSE is well-captured by a simple model of ballistic escape from a deep potential well, with no additional barrier to evaporation beyond the cohesive strength of the liquid. Equivalently, they are consistent with a near-unity probability for a water molecule impinging upon a liquid droplet to condense. These results agree with previous simulations and with some, but not all, recent experiments

Novel bisimide-fused acenes were synthesized viabismuth triflate mediated double-cyclization reaction of acid chlorides and isocyanates. Their optical and electrical properties revealed significantly smaller HOMO-LUMO gaps compared with those of their parent acenes. Fabricated OFET based on tetracene bisimide showed n-type OFET outputs.journal articl

Effect of Inert Tails on the Thermodynamics of DNA Hybridization

    No full text
The selective hybridization of DNA is of key importance for many practical applications such as gene detection and DNA-mediated self-assembly. These applications require a quantitative prediction of the hybridization free energy. Existing methods ignore the effects of non-complementary ssDNA tails beyond the first unpaired base. We use experiments and simulations to show that the binding strength of complementary ssDNA oligomers is altered by these sequences of non-complementary nucleotides. Even a small number of non-binding bases are enough to raise the hybridization free energy by approximately 1 kcal/mol at physiological salt concentrations. We propose a simple analytical expression that accounts quantitatively for this variation as a function of tail length and salt concentration

Sitting at the Edge: How Biomolecules use Hydrophobicity to Tune Their Interactions and Function

    No full text
Water near extended hydrophobic surfaces is like that at a liquid–vapor interface, where fluctuations in water density are substantially enhanced compared to those in bulk water. Here we use molecular simulations with specialized sampling techniques to show that water density fluctuations are similarly enhanced, even near hydrophobic surfaces of complex biomolecules, situating them at the edge of a dewetting transition. Consequently, water near these surfaces is sensitive to subtle changes in surface conformation, topology, and chemistry, any of which can tip the balance toward or away from the wet state and thus significantly alter biomolecular interactions and function. Our work also resolves the long-standing puzzle of why some biological surfaces dewet and other seemingly similar surfaces do not

<div><p>(A) Map of SNPs typed.</p> <p>(B) Comparison between Δ<i>32</i> and a single non-Δ<i>32</i> class of haplotypes. It should be noted that the Δ<i>32</i>-bearing chromosomes appear (red) to have greatly extended LD compared to the non-Δ<i>32</i>-bearing chromosomes (black).</p> <p>(C) Breakdown using the eight-marker haplotype containing the Δ<i>32</i> mutation. There are five haplotypes in European-Americans (frequencies: 42%, 31%, 10%, 8%, and 8%, respectively). Full haplotype sequences and frequencies in other populations are given in <a href="http://www.plosbiology.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pbio.0030378#st003" target="_blank">Table S3</a>. Notice that two of the non-Δ<i>32</i>-bearing chromosomes (black) appear to have the similar extended LD when compared to the Δ<i>32</i>-bearing chromosomes centromere-distal to <i>CCR5</i> (red). Centromere-proximal Δ<i>32</i>-bearing chromosomes still have the most extended LD, indicated with an arrow.</p></div
