Review of confidence factor in EC8-part3: a european code for seismic assessment of existing buildings

The built environment, both historic and of recent construction, is exposed to high level of seismic risk due to increasing level of seismicity around the world. Thus, it is necessary to assess the existing building performance to current level of seismicity in order to perform the cost-effective interventions. EC8-Part 3 is devoted to seismic assessment/retrofitting of existing buildings. This document introduces an adjustment factor to account for epistemic uncertainty, called “confidence factor (CF)”. CF is based on the level of knowledge of the structural properties such as geometry, reinforcement layout and detailing, and materials. This solution, plausible from a logical point of view, cannot yet profit from the experience of use in practice, hence its soundness needs to be investigated in real applications. This paper proposes a probabilistic based method to calibrate CF, which can simulate the entire assessment procedure conditional on the acquired knowledge. The method is then applied to six-storey three-bay reinforced concrete frame to assess the role of CF. The obtained CF's values are then critically examined and compared with code-specified ones. 郵送とインターネットの複合調査 : 毎日新聞社と埼玉大学の試み〔論文〕

毎日新聞社と埼玉大学社会調査研究センターが2016 年に実施した世論調査では，調査対象者が郵送で回答するかインターネットで回答するかを選択できるようにした．対象者が最初に受け取る依頼はがきには，インターネットの回答ページにアクセスするためのアドレス（URL）と，対象者本人であることを認証するためのID およびパスワードを記載した．したがって，紙の調査票が届く前でも，依頼はがきが届けばインターネットで回答できるようになる．また，回答ページは，紙の調査票とほとんど同じ見た目の画面が表示されるよう調整した．ただ，そのような調整が可能なのはパソコンだけだったので，インターネットからの回答はパソコンからのみ可能とした．調査の結果，有効回答率は57.6％となり，そのうち5.0％ポイントがインターネットからの回答だった．郵送のみの回答手段を提供していた過去3 回にわたる調査の回答率の平均と比べると，今回は3.1 ポイント低かった．インターネットからの回答者は郵送に比べると男性が多く，郵送は70 歳以上が最多だったのに対して40 代が最も多かった． In a Japanese Survey conducted by The Mainichi Newspapers Co. Ltd and Saitama University’s Social Survey Research Center, in 2016, the respondents were able to choose whether to reply to the survey by mail or answer online. The URL for responding to the survey, the login ID and password for proof of identity were provided through the survey’s first contact postcard. Thus, the respondents were able to answer online before the paper questionnaire arrived. The Web questionnaire emulated the paper version in visual layout and design almost completely. We did not permit respondents to answer the web questionnaire at terminals other than a PC because smartphones or tablets cannot emulate a paper questionnaire. As a result, the response rate for this survey was 57.6%, and the web respondents comprised 5.0 percentage points of this rate. The response rate was lower (decreased by 3.1 percentage points) than the average of response rates for the past three times. In contrast to the mail respondents, the web respondents comprised a higher proportion of male respondents than female respondents. <p>Genomic DNA was extracted from transgenic parasites at various times with wild type parasites as control. The primer pair of Tb5/Tf (upper line) was used to detect the integrated fragment in the transgenic parasite, while the primer pair of Tb5/T-Pb (lower line) was used to amplify the native sequence of PbMSP1 in the wild-type parasites used as controls (A). Ten micrograms of genomic DNA of wild type and transgenic <i>P. berghei</i> parasites collected at different times was digested with HincII and hybridized to probe PbM while the HincII-digested transfection plasmid served as positive control (B). <p>The same fields were photographed using bright (left panel) and fluorescence microscopy (right panel). Mature schizont stage (A). Early schizont stage (B). Flow cytometry analysis of blood cells obtained from infected mice with asynchronous infections. Per sample, 10⁶ erythrocytes were analyzed. Dot plots of blood cells were obtained from uninfected (upper line) and PfMSP1-19Pb_8.7-infected (lower line) mice. For counting the number of infected cells the erythrocyte population was selected by size (forward-scatter (FSC) and side-scatter (SSC)) as shown in the left panel. The center panel shows the relative GFP-fluorescence intensity of cells in the R1 region. Fluorescent erythrocytes were selected from region M2.
