Bright solitons and soliton trains in a fermion-fermion mixture

We use a time-dependent dynamical mean-field-hydrodynamic model to predict and study bright solitons in a degenerate fermion-fermion mixture in a quasi-one-dimensional cigar-shaped geometry using variational and numerical methods. Due to a strong Pauli-blocking repulsion among identical spin-polarized fermions at short distances there cannot be bright solitons for repulsive interspecies fermion-fermion interactions. However, stable bright solitons can be formed for a sufficiently attractive interspecies interaction. We perform a numerical stability analysis of these solitons and also demonstrate the formation of soliton trains. These fermionic solitons can be formed and studied in laboratory with present technology.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure

Spectrum and decays of kaonic hydrogen

By using the non-relativistic effective Lagrangian approach to bound states, a complete expression for the isospin-breaking corrections to the energy levels and the decay widths of kaonic hydrogen is obtained up-to-and-including O(alpha,m_d-m_u) in QCD. It is demonstrated that, although the leading-order corrections at O(alpha^{1/2},(m_d-m_u)^{1/2}) emerging due to the unitarity cusp, are huge, they can be expressed solely in terms of the KN S-wave scattering lengths. Consequently, at leading order, it is possible to derive parameter-free modified Deser-type relations, which can be used to extract the scattering lengths from the hadronic atom data.Comment: 9 pages, 3 postscript figures, epj style. Josephson oscillation of a superfluid Fermi gas

Using the complete numerical solution of a time-dependent three-dimensional mean-field model we study the Josephson oscillation of a superfluid Fermi gas (SFG) at zero temperature formed in a combined axially-symmetric harmonic plus one-dimensional periodic optical-lattice (OL) potentials after displacing the harmonic trap along the axial OL axis. We study the dependence of Josephson frequency on the strength of the OL potential. The Josephson frequency decreases with increasing strength as found in the experiment of Cataliotti et al. [Science 293 (2001) 843] for a Bose-Einstein condensate and of the experiment of Pezze et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93 (2004) 120401] for an ideal Fermi gas. We demonstrate a breakdown of Josephson oscillation in the SFG for a large displacement of the harmonic trap. These features of Josephson oscillation of a SFG can be tested experimentally.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure

The relevance of cognitive dysfunction and comprehension of abstract words

In healthy subjects, the comprehension process is different between abstract words and concrete words. Previous studies reported that the understanding speed is faster and more accurate for concrete words than abstract words; however, this difference is increased in subjects who have language dysfunction due to brain damage. In this report, we focused on abstract words, and investigated how the ability to comprehend them may be used in the evaluation of language acquisition and adult cognitive function. In the literature, studies on the understanding and expression of abstract words rarely included patients with dementia. In this study, we examined the understanding and expression of abstract words in three patients with dementia using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Abstract Word Understanding Test (SCTAW), and a free conversation analysis. The SCTAW results showed that all subjects had scores below the average of the same age group. Moreover, the most common false-reaction pattern was observed, and it was found to be associated with "semantic-related" stimuli, with the same type of error most frequently occurring in healthy subjects. In addition, the results of the conversation analysis showed that MMSE scores and the number of abstract words expressed by the patients tended to be correlated. Therefore, the results suggested that cognitive function was correlated with the number of abstract words expressed.Original Articleothe

Reportdepartmental bulletin pape

Enhancing swallowing reflexes in patients with dysphagia through interferential current therapy

    Get PDF
Background: Dysphagia, often caused by aging or disease, is a major focus for speech-language pathologists. Electrical stimulation therapy, including interferential current (IFC) therapy, has recently gained attention in swallowing rehabilitation. This study investigates the effects of IFC on swallowing-related reflexes. Methods: Twenty patients with dysphagia were randomized into stimulation and sham groups. We evaluated reflexes (swallowing, cough, pharyngeal) and swallowing functions (repeated saliva swallow test [RSST], tongue pressure, functional oral intake scale [FOIS], Fujishima grade). IFC therapy was applied for 30 minutes daily, alongside conventional training, over one month. Results: The stimulation group showed significant improvements in cough latency, cough frequency, pharyngeal reflex, RSST, tongue pressure, FOIS, and Fujishima grade. The sham group showed improvement in RSST, FOIS, and Fujishima grade. Conclusion: IFC therapy combined with conventional rehabilitation significantly improved swallowing function in our cohort of patients with dysphagia, particularly cough and pharyngeal reflexes.articl

Construction of next generation mobile video on demand delivery system using broadcast and communication integration environments

Watching high quality videos anytime, anywhere is expected because mobile devices become popular. However, if mobile devices try to watch a video at the same time via a wireless network, the concentrated loads to delivery server cause a delay and a stop of playing videos on client devices. Therefore, in this paper, we realize a mobile video on demand delivery system that mobile devices can watch high quality videos continuously by integrated methods of broadcast and communication. We delvelop the prototype system and have practical experiments to evaluate the proposed system.conference pape

Modernization and the Family in Japan

departmental bulletin pape
