In this paper, we evaluate the ranging and positioning performance considering the actual usage environments about Wi-Fi RTT (Round Trip Time). As the results, we show that frequency band, band width, channel, and channel status influence the ranging and positioning performance. Also, we obtain the knowledge about the installation height criteria of access points and the selection criterion of access points. In addition, we show the relationships between channel status and positioning performance. Consequently, we obtain the knowledge about the importance of the channel selection on Wi-Fi RTT.Copyright ©2020 by IEICEtextapplication/pdftechnical repor

Comparative Assessment of Human Health Risks from Rice Consumption in Thailand and Vietnam
Rice is the staple food of Southeast Asia, whose population consumes about 197 kg per capita per year.Heavy metals present in this rice are therefore a serious health matter. This study was conducted to i) monitor and compare the rice cultivated in both Thailand and Vietnam with respect to the heavy metals contained, and ii) assess any local human health risk from rice consumption. The results showed nonsignificant differences in heavy metal concentrations in different types of polished rice (jasmine, sticky, and white). Similar samples of brown jasmine rice were found to have higher metal concentrations compared to other polished rice samples. By the CODEX standards, most rice samples collected from Thailand and Vietnam are generally safe for consumption on a daily basis. Human health risk assessment, however, reveals daily consumption of this rice might lead to negative health impacts from Zn toxicity (at hazard quotients > 1); this held for all types of rice grains tested.othe
Wisdom in Adversity: A Twitter Study of the Japanese Tsunami
Sophisticated data science techniques have recently been applied to social networks data to study social phenomena and people. Recognizing that social psychology research has witnessed a renewed interest in the notion of wisdom, with an emphasis to its contextual dimensions, this study looks at the expression of wisdom in twitter messages. Specifically, it examines the relation between wisdom in adversity and cultural influences using Twitter data from the tragic Japanese tsunami of 2011. The study employs natural language processing and data science to detect the expression of wisdom. Two categories for wisdom in adversity are used: recognition of uncertainty and change, and cognitive empathy. Data processing is applied to 1,000 annotated tweets and extended to 43,436 tweets. The results show that it is viable to study wisdom in context using social networking sites data. This short paper discusses some of the findings.conference pape
Three-Dimensional Solution Structure of Oryzacystatin-I, a Cysteine Proteinase Inhibitor of the Rice, <i>Oryza sativa</i> L. japonica†,‡
The three-dimensional structure of oryzacystatin-I, a cysteine proteinase inhibitor of the rice,
Oryza sativa L. japonica, has been determined in solution at pH 6.8 and 25 °C by 1H and 15N NMR
spectroscopy. The main body (Glu13−Asp97) of oryzacystatin-I is well-defined and consists of an α-helix
and a five-stranded antiparallel β-sheet, while the N- and C-terminal regions (Ser2−Val12 and Ala98−Ala102) are less defined. The helix-sheet architechture of oryzacystatin-I is stabilized by a hydrophobic
cluster formed between the α-helix and the β-sheet and is considerably similar to that of monellin, a
sweet-tasting protein from an African berry, as well as those of the animal cystatins studied, e.g., chicken
egg white cystatin and human stefins A and B (also referred to as human cystatins A and B). Detailed
structural comparison indicates that oryzacystatin-I is more similar to chicken cystatin, which belongs to
the type-2 animal cystatins, than to human stefins A and B, which belong to the type-1 animal cystatins,
despite different loop length
Structural and Functional Analyses of the Acidic and Basic Amino Acid Repeat Sequence (DDRK) in Pif 80 from Pinctada fucata on the Aragonite Crystal Surface Using NMR
Shellfish and crustaceans use calcium carbonate (CaCO3) as a protective shell and exoskeleton. CaCO3 is
a major
biomineral component in invertebrates. The Pinctada
fucata shell contains two crystal polymorphs, with
outer prismatic and inner nacreous layers. Diverse shell organic materials
play significant roles in microstructure formation with organic–inorganic
interactions. Pif 80 has a repeated acidic and basic amino acid low-complexity
region that specifically binds to aragonite crystals. In this study,
we aimed to elucidate the microstructure formation mechanism by analyzing
the interaction between the low-complexity region and CaCO3. We used solution NMR to evaluate the structure and activity of
the Pif 80 acidic region. We designed synthesis methods for aragonite
nanoparticles that can be dispersed and rotated in solution. The results
revealed that the “GDDRKDDRKG” peptide has the appropriate
structure for aragonite surface binding, wherein the four carboxy
groups of the Asp side chain are in the same plane, supported by Arg
and Lys residues. The saturation transfer difference also supported
this structure. These results suggest that the Pif 80 acidic region
binds the aragonite crystal surface via Asp side chains with basic
residues, providing new insights into the function of acidic and basic
amino acids in biomineral formation
