Improving Joint Properties of Friction Welded Joint of High Tensile Steel

    Get PDF
This report describes the improvements in the joint properties of friction welded joint of 780 MPa class high tensile steel. Welded joint made by a continuous drive friction welding machine, the conventional method, had not obtained 100% joint efficiency despite applying forge pressure. This was due to the softening of the welded interface zone for heat input during braking times. Therefore, we developed a continuous drive friction welding machine with an electromagnetic clutch to prevent heat input during braking time. We proposed the process as “The Low Heat Input Friction Welding Method (the LHI method).” In this case, the joint had the same tensile strength as the base metal at friction time when the friction torque reached the initial peak torque. That is, the welded joint obtained 100% joint efficiency by using only the friction stage up to the initial peak torque without the forge (upsetting) stage, despite the existence of a slightly softened region adjacent to the welded interface. Furthermore, the softened region was hardly generated when this joint was made by applying forge pressure at the initial peak torque. In conclusion, a welded joint of high tensile steel made by only the friction stage of the LHI method had excellent joint properties. The LHI method has a lot of advantages for joining such materials as super fine grain steel with which conventional fusion welding processes have difficulty.application/pdfjournal articl

<p>Age-synchronized <i>C. elegans</i>, maintained and collected as described in <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0009339#s4" target="_blank">Materials and Methods</a>, were assayed at day 4 of age after treatment with vehicle (control), herbal formula SQDB (100 µg/ml), CIN, GS (10 µg/ml) or L-ascorbic acid (Vit.C 10 µg/ml) for 48 h. The worms were then analyzed for H2O2 levels by incubation with 50 µM DCF-DA for 2.5 h, followed by measurement of fluorescent DCF production. Results are expressed as DCF fluorescence relative to untreated controls. *Statistically significant (independent t test, P<0.05); **statistically significant (P<0.01). Results are obtained from three independent experiments with a total of 300 worms.</p

PRECIS scoring for the 10 included trials comparing different methodological aspects (second rating after consensus procedure), a larger rounder figure would correlate with a higher score on PRECIS representing more the effectiveness side.

Effect of <i>Cinnamomum cassia</i> (CIN) on life span in multiple pathway mutants of <i>C. elegans</i>.

<p>Age synchronized control (circles) or CIN fed (triangles) worms were seeded in liquid medium at the L1 stage. CIN treatment began 68 h after seeding (day 1 of adult life) and the fraction of animals alive was scored microscopically on the basis of movement. A. CIN significantly extends life span in wild type worms but not in B. <i>daf-16</i> C. <i>mev-1</i> or D. <i>ser-1</i> mutants. Survival rate was scored every day and is expressed as percentage of survival. The experiment was conducted at least three times with a minimum of 100 worms per trial. Statistical significant p<0.05, n.s. not significant.</p
