journal articl

Red boxes indicates a higher gene expression in cervical carcinoma samples. Blue boxes indicates that a member of indicated gene family is expressed in normal tissues, and other member in tumors. Green boxes indicate that the gene was not altered

Exploiting Visual-Outer Shape for Tactile-Inner Shape Estimation of Objects Covered with Soft Materials

    No full text
In this letter, we consider the problem of inner-shape estimation of objects covered with soft materials, e.g., pastries wrapped in paper or vinyl, water bottles covered with shock-absorbing fabrics, or human bodies dressed in clothes. Due to the softness of the covered materials, tactile information obtained through physical touches can be useful to estimate such inner shape; however, using only tactile information is inefficient since it can collect local information at around the touchpoint. Another approach would be taking visual information obtained by cameras into account; however, it is not straightforward since the visual information only captures the outer shape of the covered materials, and it is unknown how much such visual-outer shape is similar/dissimilar to the tactile-inner shape. We propose an active tactile exploration framework that can utilize the visual-outer shape to efficiently estimate the inner shape of objects covered with soft materials. To this end, we propose the Gaussian Process Inner-Outer Implicit Surface model (GPIOIS) that jointly models the implicit surfaces of inner-outer shapes with their similarity by Gaussian processes. Simulation and real-robot experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of our method.journal articl

Multi-step motion learning by combining learning-from-demonstration and policy-search

    No full text
In this paper, we focus on tasks that require multi-step motions to achieve the goal (defined as a ‘multi-step task’), and we describe a method for a robot to automatically achieve the final goal of a multi-step task. We proposed a method based on reinforcement learning and ‘Teaching by Showing’ for multi-step tasks. A robot can learn how to complete a task automatically by referring to the motions of a human operator, even if the task consists of multi-step motions. Because a human operator is not required to operate the robot during the learning process, we believe that our proposed method can reduce the burden on the human operator. Finally, we conducted experiments to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method and compared it to a conventional reinforcement learning method.journal articl

Genes with expression levels that are statistically beyond delta in either direction are plotted either above (induced, red) or below (repressed, green) the control group. Genes which expression level did not change more than the set delta in either direction were considered to be not statistically significantly different at the set false discovery rate. Cluster analysis of cDNA microarray data. Microarray data were analyzed by the Eisen Hierarchical Cluster program and visualized with TreeView. The cluster shows 2,836 genes. Each row represents a gene, whereas each column corresponds to a tissue sample, the color line below tissue samples indicates, a) green: normal samples and b) red: tumor samples. The relative abundance of each gene in the tissue correlates with color intensity (red induced; green, repressed; black, no change). On the dendogram, all eight invasive cervical cancers clustered together such as two of the tree normal samples (N and N1) cluster indicating their similarity based on expression profile
