Study of the stabilization parameter in the virtual element method

    Get PDF
The virtual element method is an approximate solution method for partial differential equations that does not require the explicit definition of interpolation functions for test and trial functions in the elements. Accordingly, it can easily handle polygonal and polyhedral elements, including nonconvex shapes, and it has begun to attract attention as a generalization of the finite element method. As one of the two terms that constitute the internal virtual work, the stabilization term has received little attention, and methods for determining the stabilization parameter have not been proposed to date. Thus, in this study, we focus on the stabilization parameter of the stabilization term. Through a series of eigenvalue analyses of the stiffness matrices, we show that the stabilization parameter corresponds to the energy of the mode not included in the consistency term. From this consideration, we propose a method for setting the stabilization parameter appropriately.journal articl

The distribution of bending stress along the direction perpendicular to the bridge axis on the flange of beams with a wide flange is not uniform due to shear lag. In the design of beams, the additional stress due to the shear lag is considered by reducing the bending rigidity by the effective width. However, it has been known that the shear lag is not caused by bending but by cross-sectional deformation associated with shear deformation. In this context, a beam theory with a degree of freedom of cross-sectional deformation due to shear is proposed to evaluate shear lag effect. While the beam theory considering cross-sectional deformation has been known to estimate shear lag effect accurately, a finite element analysis of representative volume of cross-section is required to obtain a couple of additional cross-sectional parameters. In this study, we propose a method to estimate the additional parameters using LASSO regression and Gaussian process regression. The accuracy of the proposed method is confirmed by a set of test data.journal articl

Study comparison between firefly algorithm and particle swarm optimization for SLAM problems

    Get PDF
Simultaneous localization and mapping abbreviated in SLAM is a procedure used to elaborate autonomous mobile robots that can construct a map of an unknown surroundings and simultaneously use that map to calculate its own position. There is many implementations of methods for solving the SLAM problem. In this context, Firefly Algorithm is inspired by fireflies behavior in nature and is one of the latest models same as PSO that is the abbreviation for Particle Swarm Optimization which is inspired by bird flocking or fish schooling and described as population depend on optimization process. We conducted a sequence of experiments using each algorithm and the results of those experiements were evaluated and compared to find the best solutions.journal articl

Study on Multi-Scale Modeling of Plasticity by Atomic Model

    Get PDF
By virtue of the development of metallurgy and the theory of dislocation, one can qualitatively anticipate the mechanical properties of a material from its microstructure. Moreover, not quali- tative but quantitative and precise anticipation is more beneficial for ecient development of new materials. In this context, we utilize a multi-scale method with atomic model, which is a particle system that has potential, and discuss the possibility of quantitative anticipation of material properties including plastic deformation through several representative numerical examples.journal articl

-Editorial-Special Issue on The July 2020 Heavy Rainfall Event in Japan

    Get PDF
In July 2020, the Kyushu region experienced record-breaking heavy rains from July 4 to7, causing extreme floods in the Kuma and Chikugo Rivers. This was followed by atmospheric instability over a wide area from western Japan to the Tohoku region, resulting in heavy rainfall on July 13–14 in the Chugoku region, and on July 27–28 in the Tohoku region. There was also flooding of large rivers including the Go River and the Mogami River. In recent years, record-breaking torrential rainfall disasters have been occurring every year. The heavy precipitation scale has been increasing in space and time as well as in rainfall intensity, resulting in spatio-temporal expansion of the damage. Furthermore, in 2020, the disaster occurred amidst the restriction of social activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The compilation and dissemination of disaster survey data and lessons are essential for the sustainable development of society. Therefore, JSCE has planned a special issue on the July 2020 torrential rain disaster to share and disseminate disaster information and to contribute to the advancement of technology and science related to disaster prevention and mitigation.journal articl
