Study abroad during a pandemic : The impact of remote learning and social distancing on student experiences
This research was supported by Grants-in-Aid for Early Career Scientists (19K13307 and 19K13279).departmental bulletin pape
Improving Study Abroad Programs for Japanese University Students : Partner University and Student Perspectives
Study abroad (SA) programs benefit participants’ personal growth but also present challenges as students adapt to new sociocultural contexts (Allen & Ramonda, 2023). Successful pre-departure preparation is essential to provide students with the academic, cultural and emotional foundations (Humphreys & Baker, 2021). Moreover, host university SA managers and coordinators play critical roles in facilitating successful sojourns, but their voices are underrepresented in the literature (Allen, 2023). To fill this gap, the authors surveyed 28 mobility staff from seven countries, asking how the SA experience can be improved for Japanese students, and triangulated their data with responses from 105 English majors who sojourned in 2023. Results highlighted that, although Kansai University Faculty of Foreign Language Studies (KUFFLS) students are comparatively well-prepared for their SA experience, four main themes arose from the coordinators related to preparation, student empowerment, acculturation and extracurricular integration. While student responses generally affirmed the partner universities’ positive observations about their preparedness, they also highlighted challenges related to differing expectations of student independence, cultural nuances, and integrating extracurricular activities with academic demands. These results suggest that before SA, home and host universities should cooperate in developing realistic student expectations about their independence, cultural differences and extracurricular engagementdepartmental bulletin pape

Inhibition of Food Transportation in the Rat Stomach from Hepatic Branch Vagotomy
The transportation of residual food particles (RFP) in the stomach after hepatic branch vagotomy (HBV) in rats were examined. Weights of the RFP increased 3 and 7 days after vagotomy, but the RFP response disappeared 14 days later. No significant difference in the food and water intake between control and HBV animals was seen during the experimental periods. The wet weight of the stomach 3 days after vagotomy was greater in the HBV rats than in the HBV control rats. These results suggest that the hepatic vagal nerve participates in the transportation of food in the stomach.departmental bulletin pape
Water entry and migration in the testa in the initial stages of imbibition for soybean (‘Mikawashima’)
Changes in a soybean at a longitudinal section parallel to the raphe–antiraphe are indicated; the same three-dimensional image data as in Fig. were processed. Top: the sliced images of γ section (Fig. D); bottom: MIP images from δ to ε sections (Fig. D). (A, G) 5 min, (B, H) 20 min, (C, I) 35 min, (D, J) 50 min, (E, K) 1 h 5 min, and (F, L) 1 h 20 min.<p><b>Copyright information:</b></p><p>Taken from "Role of Seed Coat in Imbibing Soybean Seeds Observed by Micro-magnetic Resonance Imaging"</p><p></p><p> 2008;102(3):343-352.</p><p>Published online 19 Jun 2008</p><p>PMCID:PMC2516911.</p><p></p
Time course of water uptake, increase of size, and increments of the major and minor axes of soybean
Measurements were carried out on the same section as in Fig. . Water amount (density) is indicated by the integrated signal intensity, and the increase of size is indicated by the area of the bean. The increments (%) of area, the major axis and the minor axis are given by [( – )/] × 100, where is the value at time and is the value at time 0.<p><b>Copyright information:</b></p><p>Taken from "Role of Seed Coat in Imbibing Soybean Seeds Observed by Micro-magnetic Resonance Imaging"</p><p></p><p> 2008;102(3):343-352.</p><p>Published online 19 Jun 2008</p><p>PMCID:PMC2516911.</p><p></p
Water migration from the entrance to the radicle along the hilum, following rapid water entry into the dorsal testa in the initial stages of imbibition
The same three-dimensional image data as presented in Fig. were processed. The MIP images from α to β sections in Fig. C are presented from 1 h 5 min to 4 h 20 min of imbibition. (A) 1 h 5 min, (B) 1 h 20 min, (C) 1 h 35 min, (D) 1 h 50 min, (E) 2 h 5 min, (F) 2 h 20 min, (G) 2 h 35 min, (H) 2 h 50 min, (I) 3 h 5 min, (J) 3 h 20 min, (K) 3 h 35 min, (L) 3 h 50 min, (M) 4 h 5 min, and (N) 4 h 20 min.<p><b>Copyright information:</b></p><p>Taken from "Role of Seed Coat in Imbibing Soybean Seeds Observed by Micro-magnetic Resonance Imaging"</p><p></p><p> 2008;102(3):343-352.</p><p>Published online 19 Jun 2008</p><p>PMCID:PMC2516911.</p><p></p
