Phenomenological analysis connecting proton-proton and antiproton-proton elastic scattering
Based on the behavior of the elastic scattering data, we introduce an almost
model-independent parametrization for the imaginary part of the scattering
amplitude, with the energy and momentum transfer dependences inferred on
empirical basis and selected by rigorous theorems and bounds from axiomatic
quantum field theory. The corresponding real part is analytically evaluated by
means of dispersion relations, allowing connections between particle-particle
and particle-antiparticle scattering. Simultaneous fits to proton-proton and
antiproton-proton experimental data in the forward direction and also including
data beyond the forward direction, lead to a predictive formalism in both
energy and momentum transfer. We compare our extrapolations with predictions
from some popular models and discuss the applicability of the results in the
normalization of elastic rates that can be extracted from present and future
accelerator experiments (Tevatron, RHIC and LHC).Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, to appear in Eur. Phys. J.
Electron Scattering on 3He - a Playground to Test Nuclear Dynamics
The big spectrum of electron induced processes on 3He is illustrated by
several examples based on Faddeev calculations with modern nucleon-nucleon and
three-nucleon forces as well as exchange currents. The kinematical region is
restricted to a mostly nonrelativistic one where the three-nucleon c.m. energy
is below the pion production threshold and the three-momentum of the virtual
photon is sufficiently below the nucleon mass. Comparisons with available data
are shown and cases of agreement and disagreement are found. It is argued that
new and precise data are needed to systematically check the present day
dynamical ingredients.Comment: 27 pages, 24 figure
Measuring Market Power in a Dynamic Oligopoly Model : The Dallas-Forth Worth Milk Market Case
We derive a dynamic structural model based on a dynamic supergame model and measure market power for the Dallas-Forth Worth milk market in the U.S. In particular, we analyze the cyclical behavior of firm conduct and evaluate bias in static market-power measures in a unified manner by deriving and estimating a dynamic first-order condition for profit maximization. We find that firm conduct in the Dallas-Forth Worth milk market is countercyclical against demand shocks and expected future cost shocks. We also demonstrate that the conduct parameter in a static model underestimates true market power if firms' behaviors are posited by a dynamic supergame.departmental bulletin pape

Ultrastr uctural study of the undulated epithelial side of glomer ular basement membrane in membranousnephropathy;clinicopathological study of 20 patients
Introduction: Membranous nephropathy (MN) is a common cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults and is characterized by electron-dense deposits (EDD) in the glomerular basement membrane (GBM). On the other hand, undulations, which are formed on the epithelial side of the GBM irrelevant to EDD, are observed in some cases; these findings were not considered in the Ehrenreich and Churg (EC) classification in MN.
Methods: Twenty adult patients with MN formed long segments of undulations on the epithelial side of the GBM without reactions to subepithelial EDD by EM were enrolled. We compared the clinicopathological findings of these cases with 20 control cases of MN patients who did not have this undulation. These two patient groups were matched for gender, age, and class of disease stage in the EC classification of MN.
Results: In the study group, the lamina densa thickened in many areas in comparison with the control group (962.4±309.1 vs. 604.0±296.5 nm; p=0.001). In addition, the number of C3c positive cases were less in the immunofluorescence (IF) study, (n=4 vs. n=12; p=0.009), and serum complement levels tended to be higher than those in the control group.
Conclusion: In our study, the pathogenesis of GBM undulation was not determined. Nevertheless, these results indicate that diverse immune responses, in addition to the complement system, may be involved differently from usual cases of MN.departmental bulletin pape
