Optimal stomatal behaviour around the world
© 2015 Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved. Stomatal conductance (g s) is a key land-surface attribute as it links transpiration, the dominant component of global land evapotranspiration, and photosynthesis, the driving force of the global carbon cycle. Despite the pivotal role of g s in predictions of global water and carbon cycle changes, a global-scale database and an associated globally applicable model of g s that allow predictions of stomatal behaviour are lacking. Here, we present a database of globally distributed g s obtained in the field for a wide range of plant functional types (PFTs) and biomes. We find that stomatal behaviour differs among PFTs according to their marginal carbon cost of water use, as predicted by the theory underpinning the optimal stomatal model and the leaf and wood economics spectrum. We also demonstrate a global relationship with climate. These findings provide a robust theoretical framework for understanding and predicting the behaviour of g s across biomes and across PFTs that can be applied to regional, continental and global-scale modelling of ecosystem productivity, energy balance and ecohydrological processes in a future changing climate
Three-dimensional singularity index at interface corner in prismatic butt joint under arbitrary material combination
In this paper, the three-dimensional (3D) singularity index at the interface corner λcorner is newly analyzed for the prismatic butt joint in comparison with the two-dimensional (2D) singularity index along the interface edge λ2D previously studied. The finite element eigenanalysis reveals that the ratio of the singularity index is in the range of 0.85≤λcorner/λ2D≤1.15 for the all range of material combination. Under 2D bad pair condition expressed by Dundurs’ parameters (α,β) as α(α-2β)>0, the ratio is in the range 0.85≤λcorner/λ2D0. Simple and convenient discriminant formula at the 3D interface corner is also indicated for the appearance of the stress singularity.journal articl
How to improve both anti-loosening performance and fatigue strength of bolt nut connections economically
In this paper, how to improve both anti-loosening and fatigue strength with low cost is newly proposed for bolt-nut connection. The authors’ previous study clarified that the most suitable pitch difference α=α1 for the fatigue strength is smaller than the most suitable pitch difference α=α2 for the anti-loosening. In this paper, toward improving both fatigue strength and anti-loosening, a larger nut height coupled with pitch difference is studied through experiment and FEM analysis. It is found that with increasing the nut height, the suitable pitch difference for the anti-loosening α=α3 decreases without changing the suitable pitch difference for the fatigue strength. Therefore, a larger nut height with the pitch difference α=α3≈α1<α2 is suitable for improving both fatigue strength and anti-loosening.journal articl
Irreversible interfacial slip in shrink-fitted bimetallic work roll promoted by roll deformation
Shrink-fitted sleeve rolls have several advantages; for example, the shaft can be reused after reaching the threshold minimum diameter. However, the interfacial slip sometimes appears between the shaft and the shrink-fitted sleeve causing roll damage. To clarify the interfacial slip in real rolls, in this study, FEM analysis is performed focusing on the roll deformation promoting the failure. The irreversible relative displacement between the shaft and the sleeve may cause the interfacial slip when the roll is deformed under external loading. The amount of the interface slip increases significantly with increasing the shaft deformation by decreasing Young’s modulus of the shaft.journal articl
Edge-Based Image Synthesis Model and Its Synthesis Function Design by the Wavelet Transform
In this paper, a new image synthesis model based on a set of wavelet bases is proposed. In the proposed model, images are approximated by the sum of synthesis functions that are translated to image edge positions. By applying the proposed model to sketch-based image coding, no iterative image recovery procedure is required for image decoding. In the design of the synthesis functions, we define the synthesis functions as a linear combination of wavelet bases. The coefficients for wavelet bases are obtained from an iterative procedure. The vector quantization is applied to the vectors of the coefficients to limit the number of the synthesis functions. We apply the proposed synthesis model to the sketch-based image coding. Image coding experiments by eight synthesis functions and a comparison with the orthogonal transform methods are also given.journal articl
Antropologia e scienza.
