Cavum Septum Pellucidum and Cavum Vergae With Late-Onset Catatonia

    Get PDF
Associations between large cavum septum pellucidum and functional psychosis disorders, especially schizophrenia, have been reported. We report a case of late-onset catatonia associated with enlarged CSP and cavum vergae. A 66-year-old woman was presented with altered mental status and stereotypic movement. She was initially treated with aripiprazole and lorazepam. After 4 weeks, she was treated with electroconvulsive therapy. By 10 treatments, echolalia vanished, and catatonic behavior was alleviated. Developmental anomalies in the midline structure may increase susceptibility to psychosis, even in the elderly.ArticleJOURNAL OF ECT. 29(3):E45-E46 (2013)journal articl

Effectiveness of adjusting for heterogeneity of variance in genetic evaluation of Japanese Black cattle

Heterogeneity of variance among subclasses of an effect is a potential source of bias in genetic evaluation. The objectives of this study were to quantify the heterogeneity of variance in carcass weight in Japanese Black cattle, to develop an adjustment method to account for the heterogeneity, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the method. A total of 96,950 records were collected from steers and heifers slaughtered from 1997 to 2005. These records were grouped into 2,767 farm-market-year-sex subclasses. Fourteen log-linear models for the variances were set up to estimate the heterogeneous phenotypic variances within subclasses. Schwarz’s Bayesian information criterion was used for model selection. The preadjustment of records to a baseline variance was based on maximum likelihood estimates obtained from the selected model. As a result of adjustment, the SD, the CV, and the Gini coefficient for the phenotypic variance decreased by 68.6, 69.8, and 70.1%, respectively. When the top 5% of sires and top 1% of dams were selected, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients between the adjusted and unadjusted data were 0.95 for the selected sires and 0.78 for the selected dams. The effectiveness of the adjustment was evaluated in terms of the ability to predict breeding values, using the results of the successive genetic evaluations. Mean squared error between the parent averages and actual predicted values of the genetic merit for the sires whose progeny had a carcass record only from 2003 to 2005 was significantly reduced by the adjustment (P < 0.05). The results suggest that the genetic evaluation becomes more accurate by adjusting the data using the procedure developed in this study.journal articl

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Farm Animals in West Kordofan, and Blue Nile states, Sudan

application/pdfConsidering the veterinary and public health significance of T. gondii infection and absence of epidemiological data in West Kordofan, and Blue Nile states in Sudan, a total of 392 serum samples from camel, cattle, sheep and goats in West Kordofan, and Blue Nile states were examined for T. gondii antibodies using Latex agglutination test. The overall seroprevalence was 22.4% (88/392). The seropositivity rate was 13.3% (6/45), 44% (33/75), 61% (22/36), 15.4% (21/136), 6% (6/100) in camels, cattle, sheep and goats and donkeys, respectively. Animal species was the only risk factor of T. gondii seropositivity. The significant higher seroprevalence of T. gondii in sheep and cattle indicates their potential role in the transmission of human toxoplasmosis in Sudan and the widespread contamination of the rural environment in Sudan with Toxoplasma oocysts. Further epidemiological studies, as well as special awareness and educational programs for toxoplasmosis are strongly suggested.journal articl

Prevalence of different trypanosomes in livestock in Blue Nile and West Kordofan States, Sudan

application/pdfAfrican animal trypanosomosis, transmitted cyclically by tsetse flies or mechanically by other biting flies, causes serious health problems in livestock. Although tsetse infestations have been observed in Blue Nile State in Sudan, tsetse was eradicated in West Kordofan in 1962, and no further studies have been carried out. Accordingly, in this study, we investigated the prevalence of trypanosomosis in cattle, sheep, and goats in Blue Nile and West Kordofan States, Sudan. This cross-sectional study was conducted using 70 cattle, 62 sheep, and 116 goats, and the microhematocrit centrifugation technique was used as a parasitological test. KIN-multispecies polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect Trypanozoon sp., Trypanosoma congolense, and T. vivax; RoTat 1.2 variable surface glycoprotein-specific PCR was used to detect T. evansi; and TviCatL PCR was used to specifically detect T. vivax. The seroprevalence of trypanosomosis was assessed using card agglutination tests CATT/ T. evansi. The parasitological prevalence rates were 4% (3/70) in cattle, 2% (1/62) in sheep, and 4% (5/116) in goats. The molecular prevalence rates of T. vivax, the most prevalent parasite, were 99% (69/70) in cattle, 98% (61/62) in sheep, and 84% (98/116) in goats. Trypanozoon (T. evansi or T. brucie) rates were 30% (21/70) in cattle, 32% (20/62) in sheep, and 12% (14/116) in goats. Among Trypanozoon-positive isolates, T. evansi was confirmed in 24% (5/21) of cattle, 70% (14/20) of sheep, and 86% (12/14) of goats. Finally, T. congolense was recorded only in cattle in Blue Nile State, with a prevalence of 14% (10/70). The seroprevalence rates of CATT/T. evansi were 46% (32/70) in cattle, 45% (28/62) in sheep, and 14% (16/116) in goats. Thus, we confirmed molecularly, for the first time, the presence of Trypanozoon, particularly T. evansi and T. vivax, in sheep and goats in Sudan. Our results show that sheep and goats could be an important reservoir for trypanosomes, potentially leading to the spread of the disease to the northern parts of the country following the movement of these animals. These findings provide important insights into the epidemiology of the disease and could affect the establishment of control strategies against trypanosomosis in Sudan.journal articl

Observation of interplay between phonon chirality and electronic band topology

The recently demonstrated chiral modes of lattice motion carry angular momentum and therefore directly couple to magnetic fields. Notably, their magnetic moments are predicted to be strongly influenced by electronic contributions. Here, we have studied the magnetic response of transverse optical phonons in a set of Pb1−xSnxTe films, which is a topological crystalline insulator for x > 0.32 and has a ferroelectric transition at an x-dependent critical temperature. Polarization-dependent terahertz magnetospectroscopy measurements revealed Zeeman splittings and diamagnetic shifts, demonstrating a large phonon magnetic moment. Films in the topological phase exhibited phonon magnetic moment values that were larger than those in the topologically trivial samples by two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the sign of the effective phonon g-factor was opposite in the two phases, a signature of the topological transition according to our model. These results strongly indicate the existence of interplay between the magnetic properties of chiral phonons and the topology of the electronic band structure.journal articl

6-DOF camera pose estimation using reference points on an aerial image without altitude information

    Get PDF
A new method for estimating a six-degrees-of-freedom camera pose for a ground-view image using reference points on an aerial image is presented. Unlike typical PnP problems, altitude information is not available for the reference points in our case. The camera pose is estimated by minimizing a cost function defined as the sum of squared distances between observed 2D positions of reference points on a ground-view image and corresponding lines that are projections of 3D vertical lines passing through 2D reference points on an aerial image. The accuracy of the proposed method is evaluated quantitatively in both simulation and real environments. The availability of the proposed method is demonstrated by generating AR images from aerial and ground-view images downloaded from Google Maps and Flickr.journal articl

    <原著>システムモデルによる発達過程の理解 : その可能性と問題点

    No full text
1989-12-25It is very difficult to figure out a course and mechanisms of human development. There have been many theoretical challenges to answer this point. In these views, development is seen as a continual process of re-organization involving multiple, interacting sub-systems. These theories, however, lack specificity about timing of ontogenetic changes. Recentry, Fogel and Thelen proposed a dynamic system model based on holistic systems theories. A systems approach presumes that order arises dynamically as a result of the interaction between the cooperating elements that are changing asynchronously, rather than as a result of centrally coordinated developmental changes. It offers new perspectives for understanding development. In this article, perspectives that the model suggests are discussed.国立情報学研究所で電子化したコンテンツを使用している。departmental bulletin pape
