    Suitable indicator of heat stress for genetic evaluation of heat tolerance in Holstein cows in Japan

    application/pdfOnly a few, principal, weather stations in Japanese prefectures have the daily humidity records required to calculate the temperature–humidity index (THI) as a dairy cow heat-stress indicator. We compared three heat-stress indices: (1) THI calculated from daily average temperature and daily relative humidity at a principal weather station (PTHI); (2) daily average temperature at each herd's closest local weather station (TEMP); and (3) THI calculated from daily average temperature at each herd's closest local weather station and daily relative humidity at the principal weather station (HTHI). We used daily records from 532 provincial weather stations and test-day records of milk production from Days 6 to 305 post-first-calving in Holsteins to compare the indices as indicators of heat-stress effects on milk yield and somatic cell score (SCS). The models used the BLUPF90 package to analyze the effects of herd–year, calving age, days in milk, and PTHI, TEMP, or HTHI. We estimated each model's mean square error (MSE) and compared suitabilities among indices for each trait. TEMP heat-stress thresholds were ~18°C (milk yield) and 15–20°C (SCS). The MSE of the HTHI model was the smallest, but no significant differences were found among the indices for milk yield. © 2022 Japanese Society of Animal Science.journal articl

    Erythroid cells play essential roles in angiogenesis by bone marrow cell implantation

    Bone marrow cell implantation (BMI) has been utilized to treat patients with limb and heart ischemia. BMI provides angiogenic precursors and angiogenic cytokine-producing cells, especially erythroid cells. In this study, we induced in vitro angiogenesis cultures and in vivo BMI simulation using a murine limb ischemia model to examine the role of erythroid cells and the effect of erythropoietin (EPO). Human erythroid colonies (BFU-e) induced capillary networks around the colonies in vitro. Erythroid cells in human bone marrow produced vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor. The angiogenic effects of erythroid cells were further amplified in the presence of EPO. Limb-ischemic mice were treated with BMI ± EPO, and limb survival, blood flow recovery, and muscle histology were analyzed. Treatment with whole bone marrow cells + EPO significantly improved limb survival and blood flow. The cumulative effects of EPO on BMI induced and increase in capillary number and artery enlargement. Erythroid cells were essential for the in vivo effects of BMI, and CD14-positive cells supported the biological effects. In addition to the direct effect of EPO on angiogenesis, EPO showed indirect effect on angiogenesis through amplifying the angiogenic effects by erythroid cells supported by CD14-positive cells.journal articl

    Recently, the Cabinet Office is advocating the concept of ”Super City” that realize new lifestyles and businesses for fundamentally changing the state of society through AI. The authors have established a research unit of ”Health Smart Network” at Research Institute for Socionetwork Strategies (RISS), Kansai University as a research base to meet these social demands. Specifically, the purpose of this research unit is to make health promotion services smarted with ”eHealth + AI”, create new social communication, and contribute to extending healthy life expectancy and sustaining a healthy life.     Surface Modification of Carbon Electrodes using Argon Plasma

    In this work, an activated carbon sheet was modified, to improve capacitance and energy density of electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs). The examined optimum conditions for the plasma surface treatment is 1, 5, 10, 20, and 30 min. The plasma source was a DC glow discharge in argon gas. The pressure was 20 Pa and the distance between positive and negative electrodes was 20 mm. DC power was 70 W. The activated carbon sheets were set up to cover the sheets with the DC glow discharge. As the results of plasma treatment, EDLCs single cells with the activated carbon sheets became more marked at higher discharge rate because the BET surface area of activated carbon sheet increased by argon plasma etching. In addition, capacitance of EDLCs single cells can be improved by the plasma surface treatment. Capacitance of the EDLCs cells with the activated carbon sheets after 1 min plasma surface treatment was increased 2 % compared to EDLCs cells with the original activated carbon sheet at a high discharge rate. It indicated the modified activated carbon sheets is suitable in EDLCs for high current applications
