Preoperative CT Angiography Informs Instrumentation in Anterior Spine Surgery for Idiopathic Scoliosis.
The objective of this study is to evaluate whether the artery of Adamkiewicz localization with preoperative CT angiography influences anterior spinal instrumentation.MethodsChildren with idiopathic scoliosis who underwent anterior instrumentation and with a preoperative CT angiography were evaluated retrospectively. Data included curve type, artery of Adamkiewicz level/laterality, surgical approach laterality, number of instrumented levels and segmental vessels ligated, intraoperative neuromonitoring changes, and postoperative neural complications.ResultsThirty-nine girls and eight boys (mean age 12 years [6.7 to 16.8 years]) were analyzed. Instrumented curves indicate 28 thoracic, 14 thoracolumbar, and seven double major. The artery of Adamkiewicz: T6 (left-1), T8 (left-1), T9 (left-4/right-2), T10 (left-11/right-4), T11 (left-4/right-4), T12 (left-1/right-2), L1 (left-2/right-1), and L2 (left-3/right-2). Four had bilateral dominant segmentals, whereas in nine patients, none was identified. T10 (32%) and left side (57%) were most frequent. On average, 7.1 (4 to 11) segmentals were ligated per case (total 355). Dominant vessels were ipsilateral to/within instrumentation levels in 30%.DiscussionIn children with idiopathic scoliosis who underwent anterior instrumentation, the artery of Adamkiewicz was identified on the left in >50% and at T10 in 32%. In one-third of the patients, the artery was within intended surgical levels and resulted in instrumentation modification
Classification of tropospheric ozone profiles over Johannesburg based on MOZAIC aircraft data
International audienceEach ozone profile is a unique response to the photochemical and dynamic processes operating in the troposphere and hence is critical to our understanding of processes and their relative contributions to the tropospheric ozone budget. Traditionally, mean profiles, together with some measure of variability, averaged by season or year at a particular location have been presented as a climatology. However, the mean profile is difficult to interpret because of the counteracting influences present in the micro-structure. On the other hand, case study analysis, whilst revealing, only applies to isolated conditions. In a search for pattern and order within ozone profiles, a classification based on a cluster analysis technique has been applied in this study. Ozone profiles are grouped according to the magnitude and altitude of ozone concentration. This technique has been tested with 56 ozone profiles at Johannesburg, South Africa, recorded by aircraft as part of the MOZAIC (Measurement of Ozone and Water Vapor aboard Airbus In-service Aircraft) program. Six distinct groups of ozone profiles have been identified and their characteristics described. The widely recognized spring maximum in tropospheric ozone is identified through the classification, but a new summertime mid-tropospheric enhancement due to the penetration of tropical air masses from continental regions in central Africa has been identified. Back trajectory modeling is used to provide evidence of the different origins of ozone enhancements in each of the classes. Continental areas over central Africa are shown to be responsible for the low to mid-tropospheric enhancement in spring and the mid-tropospheric peak in summer, whereas the winter low-tropospheric enhancement is attributed to local sources. The dominance of westerly winds through the troposphere associated with the passage of a mid-latitude cyclone gives rise to reduced ozone values
In the Saguenay Fjord, the fish community is composed of more than 60 marine, diadromous and freshwater species, including many species exploited by the winter sport fishery such as the rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax), redfish (Sebastes spp.), Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), Greenland cod (Gadus ogac), and Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides). We do not know if the recruitment of the fish species exploited by the winter sport fishery depends on the local production of recruits in the Saguenay Fjord or on exchanges with the St. Lawrence Estuary populations. Hence, we measured the spatio-temporal distribution of ichthyoplankton in the Fjord to identify zones of larval production, retention or advection, in order to investigate the recruitment mechanisms of these stocks. We sampled ichthyoplankton at 21 stations on six occasions, from May to October 2004, and on five occasions, from June to September 2005. Results indicated that the recruitment of capelin (Mallotus villosus) and of the anadromous rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) relied on the local production and retention of larvae within the Fjord. However, the recruitment of redfish (Sebastes spp.) and cods (Gadus spp.) depended on the immigration of juveniles from the St. Lawrence Estuary. Our results are corroborated by a review of previous studies of these fish populations. Studying the recruitment mechanisms of fish populations in the Saguenay Fjord supports a sustainable exploitation of these locally important fisheries resources, in accordance with the mission of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and consistent with the conservation program of the Saguenay St. Lawrence Marine Park
Design, synthesis, characterization and toxicity studies of Poly (N-Iso-Propylacrylamide-co-Lucifer Yellow) particles for drug delivery applications
A novel fluorescent temperature/pH responsive particle was designed, synthesized, characterised and tested for toxicity. Poly ( N-iso- propylacrylamide -co- 5%-lucifer yellow) (p(NIPAM -co- 5% LY)) was prepared using a surfactant free emulsion polymerisation technique. The particles were negatively charged and were approximately 250 nm at 15°C. When the particles de-swell following an increase in temperature, a particle size around 100 nm is obtained. The toxicity of different concentrations of the new particles (p(NIPAM) -co- 5% LY, as well as the 100% p(NIPAM) and the main monomer NIPAM was tested on two cell lines (Hela and Vero). The toxicity was tested in comparison to a positive control (dextran sugar) and a negative one (poly(ethylenimine)) (PEI). The results show that the two particles show cell viability over 80% (for both cell lines Hela and Vero) up to a concentration of 3 mg/mL while NIPAM monomer showed cell viability over 80% at a concentration equal to or less than 0.3 mg/mL. The fluorescence property of the novel particles make them traceable. Combining this property (tracing) to the ability of the particles to release their content in response to temperature and pH change can be a potential drug delivery system for cancer treatment
Longitudinal Hierarchy Co3O4 Mesocrystals with High-dense Exposure Facets and Anisotropic Interfaces for Direct-Ethanol Fuel Cells
Novel electrodes are needed for direct ethanol fuel cells with improved quality. Hierarchical engineering can produce catalysts composed of mesocrystals with many exposed active planes and multi-diffused voids. Here we report a simple, one-pot, hydrothermal method for fabricating Co 3 O 4 /carbon/substrate electrodes that provides control over the catalyst mesocrystal morphology (i.e., corn tubercle pellets or banana clusters oriented along nanotube domains, or layered lamina or multiple cantilevered sheets). These morphologies afforded catalysts with a high density of exposed active facets, a diverse range of mesopores in the cage interior, a window architecture, and vertical alignment to the substrate, which improved efficiency in an ethanol electrooxidation reaction compared with a conventional platinum/carbon electrode. On the atomic scale, the longitudinally aligned architecture of the Co 3 O 4 mesocrystals resulted in exposed low- and high-index single and interface surfaces that had improved electron transport and diffusion compared with currently used electrodes
