    An analysis of the North East Worker Registration Scheme Data: A briefing paper for the Regional Migrant Worker Steering Group

    Get PDF
    It has recently been stated that the opening up of the UK labour market to the new accession countries (A8s) has initiated the largest ever in-migration to these shores . Whilst there are no accurate figures of the precise number of migrants involved in this, there are a number of statistical sources that provide data on it. One of these is the Worker Registration Scheme , which whilst carrying a number of ‘health warnings’ as to accuracy of flows is useful for labour market data. For the North East, though, the publicly available accession reports include Yorkshire and Humber in their overall totals. However, the author has obtained, through freedom of information, the full North East data set . What follows are the key regional headlines and then three more in-depth sections on (1) the nationality of North East A8 workers (2) their age and gender and (3) their occupation. The key regional headlines are: Between May 2004 and September 2006, 4,934 A8 workers registered to the Scheme in the North East. This is by far the lowest number of registered A8 workers of any UK region; Sixty-six per cent of these workers were Polish. This is slightly higher than the overall UK proportion of sixty-three per cent. With the only other notable group regionally being Lithuanians (13%) again slightly higher than the UK proportion (11%);The male:female ratio of registered workers was 64:36. This is a higher male proportion than at a national level where the ratio was 57:43. Seventy-four per cent of registered workers were aged 18-34. This, though, is lower than the UK proportion of eighty-two per cent; The most frequent occupation of A8 registered workers was factory process operative (1,660). A third of all regional registered workers were classified as undertaking this occupation

    Dynamics of low-energy nuclear forces for electromagnetic and weak reactions with the deuteron in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of light nuclei

    A dynamics of low-energy nuclear forces is investigated for low-energy electromagnetic and weak nuclear reactions with the deuteron in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of light nuclei by example of the neutron-proton radiative capture (M1-capture) n + p -> D + photon, the photomagnetic disintegration of the deuteron photon + D -> n + p and weak reactions of astrophysical interest. These are the solar proton burning p + p -> D + positron + nu_e, the pep-process p + electron + p -> D + nu_e and the neutrino and anti-neutrino disintegration of the deuteron caused by charged nu_e + D -> electron + p + p, anti-nu_e + D -> positron + n + n and neutral nu_e(anti-nu_e) + D -> nu_e(ant-nu_e) + n + p weak currents.Comment: 49 pages, 3 Postscript figures, Latex.     Discovery of a probable 4-5 Jupiter-mass exoplanet to HD 95086 by direct-imaging

    Direct imaging has just started the inventory of the population of gas giant planets on wide-orbits around young stars in the solar neighborhood. Following this approach, we carried out a deep imaging survey in the near-infrared using VLT/NaCo to search for substellar companions. We report here the discovery in L' (3.8 microns) images of a probable companion orbiting at 56 AU the young (10-17 Myr), dusty, and early-type (A8) star HD 95086. This discovery is based on observations with more than a year-time-lapse. Our first epoch clearly revealed the source at 10 sigma while our second epoch lacked good observing conditions hence yielding a 3 sigma detection. Various tests were thus made to rule out possible artifacts. This recovery is consistent with the signal at the first epoch but requires cleaner confirmation. Nevertheless, our astrometric precision suggests the companion to be comoving with the star, with a 3 sigma confidence level. The planetary nature of the source is reinforced by a non-detection in Ks-band (2.18 microns) images according to its possible extremely red Ks - L' color. Conversely, background contamination is rejected with good confidence level. The luminosity yields a predicted mass of about 4-5MJup (at 10-17 Myr) using "hot-start" evolutionary models, making HD 95086 b the exoplanet with the lowest mass ever imaged around a star.Comment: accepted for publication to APJ

    Assessing the Fiscal Costs and Benefits of A8 Migration to the UK

    Get PDF
    A8 immigrants who are eligible to receive state benefits are 60% less likely to claim for them than the native population -- and are 13% less likely to do so adjusting for demographics. Since 2004, A8 migrants have made net contributions to public finances. Immigrants also tend to be more highly educated, more likely to participate in the job market, and have much higher employment rates

    Rheological characterization of the thermal gelation of cowpea protein isolates: Effect of pretreatments with high hydrostatic pressure or calcium addition

    Get PDF
    Pretreatments with high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) or calcium addition were assessed for thermal gelation of two cowpea protein isolates (protein extraction at pHs 8.0, standard (A8) or 10.0, pH-shifting-modified (A10). Maximum temperature of thermal processing and protein concentration (PC) on rheological behavior during and after gelling process were evaluated for pretreated isolates. The main effects of pretreatments occurred during heating since the proportion of heat-induced interactions that stabilized the matrixes increased. Those effects were due to partial denaturation (induced by HHP) and increase in Td (induced by CaCl2). HHP allowed gelation at temperatures (50–70 °C) lower than denaturation temperature and the obtaining of stronger gels at the highest PC (10.5 or 12.0 g/100 g). Calcium addition allowed gelation at low PC, but higher temperatures (80–95 °C) were required. Despite both pretreatments, A10 retained its ability to gel at lower PC than A8. Pressurized A10-gels were stronger than A8-gels. Calcium-added A10-gels were stronger than A8-gels at low PC (up to 7.5 g/100 g) or at high temperatures (90–95 °C), but no differences were found at high PC or at low temperatures. Thus, calcium-addition canceled those differences between A8 and A10 at high PC and at low temperatures.Fil: Peyrano, Felicitas. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. The experiences of accession 8 migrants in England : motivations, work and agency

    Get PDF
    Drawing on a recently completed qualitative study in a northern English city, this paper explores motivations and experiences of Accession 8 (A8) migrants who have entered the United Kingdom following the expansion of the European Union in 2004. The paper considers commonalities and differences among the group of migrants routinely referred to as A8 migrant workers/labourers. Diversity is apparent in three particular respects: first, the motivations and forms of movement undertaken; second, their experiences of work within the UK paid labour market; and third, the extent to which the act and experience of migration offers new individual and collective opportunities and potentially opens up spaces for people to negotiate structural constraints and reconfigure aspects of their identity

    Triple-quark elastic scatterings and thermalization

    Full text link
    Triple-quark elastic scattering amplitudes from perturbative QCD are first calculated and then used in a transport equation to study the thermalization of quark matter. By examining momentum isotropy to which the transport equation leads, we can determine thermalization time and offer an initial thermal quark distribution function. With an anisotropic initial quark distribution, which is relevant to quark matter initially created in a central Au-Au collision at \sqrt {s_{NN}}=200 GeV, the transport equation gives a time of the order of 1.8 fm/c for quark matter itself to thermalize by the triple-quark scatterings.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, LaTex, define u12,u13,u21,u23,u31,u3
