The role of spin-orbit effects in the mobility of N+ ions moving in a helium gas at low temperature
The mobility of N+ ions in ground-state helium gas at very low temperature is examined with explicit inclusion of spin–orbit coupling effects. The ionic kinetics is treated theoretically with the three-temperature model. The N+–He interaction potentials, including spin–orbit coupling, are determined using high-level ab initio calculations. Then, the classical and quantal transport cross sections, both needed in the computation of the mobility coefficients, are calculated in terms of the collisional energy of the N+–He system. The numerical results, at temperature 4.3 K, show the spin–orbit interactions have negligible effect on the mobility coefficients
Paleocene methane seep and wood-fall marine environments from Spitsbergen, Svalbard
A recently discovered Paleocene seep locality from Fossildalen on Spitsbergen, Svalbard, is described. This is one of a very few seep communities of the latest Cretaceous–earliest Palaeogene age, and the best preserved Paleocene seep community known so far. The seep carbonates and associated fossils have been first identified in museum collections, and subsequently sampled in the field. The carbonates are exclusively ex-situ and come from the offshore siltstones of the Basilika Formation. Isotopically light composition (δ13C values approaching -50‰ V-PDB), and characteristic petrographic textures of the carbonates combined with the isotopically light archaeal lipid are consistent with the formation at fossil hydrocarbon seep. The invertebrate fauna associated with the carbonates is of moderate diversity (16 species) and has a shallow water affinity. It contains a species of the thyasirid genus Conchocele, common in other seeps of that age. The finding sheds new light onto the history of seepage on Svalbard, and onto the evolution and ecology of seep faunas during the latest Cretaceous–earliest Palaeogene time interval
Flavonoid glycosides from Periploca laevigata (Asclepiadaceae) from Algeria
The phytochemical investigation of the n-butanol extract of aerial parts of Periploca laevigata resulted in the isolation of four known compounds, kaempferol 3-O-β-arabinopyranoside (1), kaempferol 3-O-β-glucopyranoside (2), quercetin 3-O-arabinopyranoside (3) and quercetin 3-O-rutinoside (4).The structures of the compounds were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR as well as acid hydrolysis and comparison with the related known compounds
Should Metabolic Diseases Be Systematically Screened in Nonsyndromic Autism Spectrum Disorders?
Abstract Background: In the investigation of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), a genetic cause is found in approximately 10-20%. Among these cases, the prevalence of the rare inherited metabolic disorders (IMD) is unknown and poorly evaluated. An IMD responsible for ASD is usually identified by the associated clinical phenotype such as dysmorphic features, ataxia, microcephaly, epilepsy, and severe intellectual disability (ID). In rare cases, however, ASD may be considered as nonsyndromic at the onset of a related IMD
