Bounded Arithmetic in Free Logic
One of the central open questions in bounded arithmetic is whether Buss'
hierarchy of theories of bounded arithmetic collapses or not. In this paper, we
reformulate Buss' theories using free logic and conjecture that such theories
are easier to handle. To show this, we first prove that Buss' theories prove
consistencies of induction-free fragments of our theories whose formulae have
bounded complexity. Next, we prove that although our theories are based on an
apparently weaker logic, we can interpret theories in Buss' hierarchy by our
theories using a simple translation. Finally, we investigate finitistic G\"odel
sentences in our systems in the hope of proving that a theory in a lower level
of Buss' hierarchy cannot prove consistency of induction-free fragments of our
theories whose formulae have higher complexity
Soluble tau species, not neurofibrillary aggregates, disrupt neural system integration in a tau transgenic model
Neurofibrillary tangles are a feature of Alzheimer disease and other tauopathies, and while they are generally believed to be markers of neuronal pathology, there is little evidence evaluating whether tangles directly impact neuronal function. To investigate the response of cells in hippocampal circuits to complex behavioral stimuli, we used an environmental enrichment paradigm to induce expression of an immediate-early gene, Arc, in the rTg4510 mouse model of tauopathy. These mice reversibly overexpress P301L tau and exhibit substantial neurofibrillary tangle deposition, neuronal loss, and memory deficits. Employing fluorescent in situ hybridization to detect Arc mRNA, we found that rTg4510 mice have impaired hippocampal Arc expression both without stimulation and in response to environmental enrichment; this likely reflects the combination of functional impairments of existing neurons and loss of neurons. However, tangle-bearing cells were at least as likely as non-tangle-bearing neurons to exhibit Arc expression in response to enrichment. Transgene suppression with doxycycline for 6 weeks resulted in increased percentages of Arc-positive cells in rTg4510 brains compared to untreated transgenics, restoring enrichment-induced Arc mRNA levels to that of wild-type controls despite the continued presence of neurofibrillary pathology. We interpret these data to indicate that soluble tau contributes to impairment of hippocampal function, while tangles do not preclude neurons from responding in a functional circuit
Riemann-Cartan Space-times of G\"odel Type
A class of Riemann-Cartan G\"odel-type space-times are examined in the light
of the equivalence problem techniques. The conditions for local space-time
homogeneity are derived, generalizing previous works on Riemannian G\"odel-type
space-times. The equivalence of Riemann-Cartan G\"odel-type space-times of this
class is studied. It is shown that they admit a five-dimensional group of
affine-isometries and are characterized by three essential parameters : identical triads () correspond to locally
equivalent manifolds. The algebraic types of the irreducible parts of the

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the one-body density matrix and excitation energies of silicon
Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques are used to calculate the one-body
density matrix and excitation energies for the valence electrons of bulk
silicon. The one-body density matrix and energies are obtained from a
Slater-Jastrow wave function with a determinant of local density approximation
(LDA) orbitals. The QMC density matrix evaluated in a basis of LDA orbitals is
strongly diagonally dominant. The natural orbitals obtained by diagonalizing
the QMC density matrix resemble the LDA orbitals very closely. Replacing the
determinant of LDA orbitals in the wave function by a determinant of natural
orbitals makes no significant difference to the quality of the wave function's
nodal surface, leaving the diffusion Monte Carlo energy unchanged. The Extended
Koopmans' Theorem for correlated wave functions is used to calculate excitation
energies for silicon, which are in reasonable agreement with the available
experimental data. A diagonal approximation to the theorem, evaluated in the
basis of LDA orbitals, works quite well for both the quasihole and
quasielectron states. We have found that this approximation has an advantageous
scaling with system size, allowing more efficient studies of larger systems.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Activity profiles of elite wheelchair rugby players during competition
To quantify the activity profiles of elite wheelchair rugby and establish classification-specific arbitrary speed zones. Additionally, indicators of fatigue during full matches were explored. Methods: Seventy-five elite wheelchair rugby players from eleven national teams were monitored using a radio-frequency based, indoor tracking system across two international tournaments. Players who participated in complete quarters (n = 75) and full matches (n = 25) were included and grouped by their International Wheelchair Rugby Federation functional classification: group I (0-0.5), II (1.0-1.5), III (2.0-2.5) and IV (3.0-3.5). Results: During a typical quarter, significant increases in total distance (m), relative distance (m·minˉ¹), and mean speed (m·sˉ¹) were associated with an increase in classification group (P < 0.001), with the exception of group III and IV. However, group IV players achieved significantly higher peak speeds (3.82 ± 0.31 m·sˉ¹) than groups I (2.99 ± 0.28 m·sˉ¹), II (3.44 ± 0.26 m·sˉ¹) and III (3.67 ± 0.32 m·sˉ¹). Groups I and II differed significantly in match intensity during very low/low speed zones and the number of high-intensity activities in comparison with groups III and IV (P < 0.001). Full match analysis revealed that activity profiles did not differ significantly between quarters. Conclusions: Notable differences in the volume of activity were displayed across the functional classification groups. However, the specific on-court requirements of defensive (I and II) and offensive (III and IV) match roles appeared to influence the intensity of match activities and consequently training prescription should be structured accordingly
Using stated preference methods to assess environmental impacts of forest biomass power plants in Portugal
As a renewable energy source, the use of forest biomass for electricity generation is advantageous in comparison with fossil fuels, however the activity of forest biomass power plants causes adverse impacts, affecting particularly neighbouring communities. The main objective of this study is to estimate the effects of the activity of forest biomass power plants on the welfare of two groups of stakeholders, namely local residents and the general population and we apply two stated preference methods: contingent valuation and discrete choice experiments, respectively. The former method was applied to estimate the minimum compensation residents of neighbouring communities of two forest biomass power plants in Portugal would be willing to accept. The latter method was applied among the general population to estimate their willingness to pay to avoid specific environmental impacts. The results show that the presence of the selected facilities affects individuals’ well-being. On the other hand, in the discrete choice experiments conducted among the general population all impacts considered were significant determinants of respondents’ welfare levels. The results of this study stress the importance of performing an equity analysis of the welfare effects on different groups of stakeholders from the installation of forest biomass power plants, as their effects on welfare are location and impact specific. Policy makers should take into account the views of all stakeholders either directly or indirectly involved when deciding crucial issues regarding the sitting of new forest biomass power plants, in order to achieve an efficient and equitable outcome
Molecular systematics and patterns of morphological evolution in the Centropagidae (Copepoda: Calanoida) of Argentina
Recent studies have shown the value of complementing standard taxonomy with genetic analyses to reveal cryptic diversity and to aid in the understanding of patterns of evolution. We surveyed variation in the COI mitochondrial gene in members of the three genera of centropagid copepods from the inland waters in Argentina. In general, we found a close association between molecular and morphological systematics in this group. Similar to findings for marine calanoids, genetic distances within Boeckella species were modest ( 11%). Parabroteas is currently monotypic, although we detected cryptic genetic diversity, with two lineages showing 5.5% divergence. In contrast, Karukinka was not a valid genus, apparently representing an interesting and atavistic offshoot of B. poppei, a result reinforcing the value of considering both morphological and molecular evidence. Moreover, we used combined genetic and morphological information, analysed with maximum likelihood methods, to evaluate the common assumption that evolution tends to proceed via the loss of structures in crustaceans. Although analysis of other taxa and character types is required to evaluate fully the reduction hypothesis, our results suggest that structures may be gained readily as well as lost. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London.Fil:Menu-Marque, S. Report on the STECF Expert Working Group 17-12 Fisheries Dependent Information: ‘New-FDI’
The STECF expert working group (EWG) on Fisheries Dependant Information (FDI) took place in JRC, Ispra from 23 to 27 October 2017 to review the data transmitted by Member States under a new data call (‘New-FDI’).
The new data call specification was designed with three broad aims in mind
i) Compatibility between the New-FDI data and the data held in the Fleet Economic database.
ii) Ability to encompass all EU registered vessels including those from the Mediterranean, Black Sea and external waters fleets.
iii) Ability to assess effects of management measures.
The main purpose of the EWG was to judge if the call specification was appropriate to accomplish the above aims and to consider any difficulties encountered by member states in fulfilling the data call. Two terms of reference also allowed trial analyses to be conducted of a type relevant to the third broad aim.
The EWG addressed all Terms of Reference during the meeting and drew conclusions on the modifications required for the New-FDI data call going forwards.
Prior to the EWG it had been agreed by STECF Bureau that the report of the meeting would not be presented to STECF for approval as an STECF report but published separately (as a JRC technical report). This report therefore presents the data, methods observations and findings of an EWG of the STECF but the findings presented in this report do not necessarily constitute the opinion of the STECF or reflect the views of the European Commission and in no way anticipate the Commission’s future policy in this area.JRC.D.2-Water and Marine Resource
