Direct Laser Sintering of Borosilicate Glass
Despite the advantages that selective laser sintering (SLS) offers in terms of material
availability, many materials have yet to be explored for feasibility and even fewer are
available on a commercial basis. This paper presents initial investigations for one such
material, borosilicate glass, which could be of particular interest to filter manufacturers
because it presents an attractive alternative to the conventional, time-consuming way of
producing filters of various porosity classes. Process results are presented including a
determination of the optimal parameter window and the effect of processing parameters on the
density and surface quality. The effects of thermal post-processing and the inclusion of an
additive are also discussed.Mechanical Engineerin
On the holomorphic factorization for superconformal fields
For a generic value of the central charge, we prove the holomorphic
factorization of partition functions for free superconformal fields which are
defined on a compact Riemann surface without boundary. The partition functions
are viewed as functionals of the Beltrami coefficients and their fermionic
partners which variables parametrize superconformal classes of metrics.Comment: 5 pages, LATEX, MPI-Ph/92-7
The Polyakov action on the supertorus
A consistent method for obtaining a well-defined Polyakov action on the
supertorus is presented. This method uses the covariantization of derivative
operators and enables us to construct a Polyakov action which is globally
defined.Comment: 15 pages LaTe
Induced Polyakov supergravity on Riemann surfaces of higher genus
An effective action is obtained for the , induced supergravity on a
compact super Riemann surface (without boundary) of genus ,
as the general solution of the corresponding superconformal Ward identity. This
is accomplished by defining a new super integration theory on
which includes a new formulation of the super Stokes theorem and residue
calculus in the superfield formalism. Another crucial ingredient is the notion
of polydromic fields. The resulting action is shown to be well-defined and free
of singularities on \sig. As a by-product, we point out a morphism between
the diffeomorphism symmetry and holomorphic properties.Comment: LPTB 93-10, Latex file 20 page
On the existence of exotic and non-exotic multiquark meson states
To obtain an exact solution of a four-body system containing two quarks and
two antiquarks interacting through two-body terms is a cumbersome task that has
been tackled with more or less success during the last decades. We present an
exact method for the study of four-quark systems based on the hyperspherical
harmonics formalism that allows us to solve it without resorting to further
approximations, like for instance the existence of diquark components. We apply
it to systems containing two heavy and two light quarks using different
quark-quark potentials. While states may be stable in nature,
the stability of states would imply the existence of quark
correlations not taken into account by simple quark dynamical models.Comment: 3 pages. Contribution to the 20th European Conference on Few-Body

Supersymmetric structure of the induced W gravities
We derive the supersymmetric structure present in W-gravities which has been
already observed in various contexts as Yang-Mills theory, topological field
theories, bosonic string and chiral W_{3}-gravity. This derivation which is
made in the geometrical framework of Zucchini, necessitates the introduction of
an appropriate new basis of variables which replace the canonical fields and
their derivatives. This construction is used, in the W_{2}-case, to deduce from
the Chern-Simons action the Wess-Zumino-Polyakov action.Comment: 17 pages, Latex. To appear in Class. Quantum. Gravit
An electrostatic interaction between TEA and an introduced pore aromatic drives spring-in-the-door inactivation in Shaker potassium channels
Slow inactivation of Kv1 channels involves conformational changes near the selectivity filter. We examine such changes in Shaker channels lacking fast inactivation by considering the consequences of mutating two residues, T449 just external to the selectivity filter and V438 in the pore helix near the bottom of the selectivity filter. Single mutant T449F channels with the native V438 inactivate very slowly, and the canonical foot-in-the-door effect of extracellular tetraethylammonium (TEA) is not only absent, but the time course of slow inactivation is accelerated by TEA. The V438A mutation dramatically speeds inactivation in T449F channels, and TEA slows inactivation exactly as predicted by the foot-in-the-door model. We propose that TEA has this effect on V438A/T449F channels because the V438A mutation produces allosteric consequences within the selectivity filter and may reorient the aromatic ring at position 449. We investigated the possibility that the blocker promotes the collapse of the outer vestibule (spring-in-the-door) in single mutant T449F channels by an electrostatic attraction between a cationic TEA and the quadrupole moments of the four aromatic rings. To test this idea, we used in vivo nonsense suppression to serially fluorinate the introduced aromatic ring at the 449 position, a manipulation that withdraws electrons from the aromatic face with little effect on the shape, net charge, or hydrophobicity of the aromatic ring. Progressive fluorination causes monotonically enhanced rates of inactivation. In further agreement with our working hypothesis, increasing fluorination of the aromatic gradually transforms the TEA effect from spring-in-the-door to foot-in-the-door. We further substantiate our electrostatic hypothesis by quantum mechanical calculations
d=2, N=2 Superconformal Symmetries and Models
We discuss the following aspects of two-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric
theories defined on compact super Riemann surfaces: parametrization of (2,0)
and (2,2) superconformal structures in terms of Beltrami coefficients and
formulation of superconformal models on such surfaces (invariant actions,
anomalies and compensating actions, Ward identities).Comment: 43 pages, late
