High-spin spectroscopy and shell-model interpretation of the N < 126 radium isotopes Ra and Ra
The level structures of Ra and Ra have been established via
time-correlated -ray spectroscopy following the
Pb(C,4)Ra and Pb(C,4)Ra
reactions. In Ra, levels up to MeV were identified and firm
spin-parity assignments were achieved to a isomer with a mean
life of 31(3) ns. For Ra the corresponding values were MeV
in excitation energy and . Two isomeric states with , ns and , ns were
discovered in Ra. The experimental data were compared with
semiempirical shell-model calculations, which allowed dominant configurations
to be assigned to most of the observed levels.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figure
Effectiveness of health education in promoting the use of iodized salt in Lotkoh, tehsil Chitral, Pakistan
Introduction: We evaluated the effect of health education on the use of iodized salt in a remote region.Methods: We randomly selected 31 villages in teh Lotkoh tehsil of district Chitral in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. We then randomly selected 7 households from each village and inteviewed the eldest women of the family. We also tested samples of salt for iodine concentration at the user\u27s level.Results: Eighty-five percent of families (184/217) used iodized salt exclusively. Among the samples population, the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) informed 67% about the importance of iodized salt. Shopkeepers and neighbors informed 25%. People informed by AKHS were more likely to know the volatile nature of iodine (76% vs 55%, p \u3c 0.001) and the advantages of iodized salt (91% vs. 75%, p = 0.001) than persons informed by other sources. People who could name any single advantage of iodized salt were more likely to use iodized salt (97%) compared to those who could not name any advantages (62%) (p \u3c 0.001) Iodine concentration in 78% (141/183) samples was acceptable (\u3e or = 15 ppm). One specific brand of salt consistently had sufficient iodine concentration (91%) compared to all others (47%) (p \u3c 0.001).CONCLUSION: Health education has been effective in promoting the use of iodized salt in these isolated rural communities. A joint effort by the government, local NGOs and the community can substitute the role of mass media in such areas. Regular evaluation of iodized salt brands should be considered
Novel insights on intake of fish and prevention of sarcopenia: All reasons for an adequate consumption
Sarcopenia is defined as a syndrome characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength and it is diagnosed by measurements of muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance. Sarcopenia affects quality of life and is associated with several adverse health effects. Muscle decline is aggravated by a sedentary lifestyle and can be prevented through proper nutrition, together with adequate physical activity. Fish contains biologically active compounds, such as omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, proteins, vitamin D, magnesium, and carnitine, which are able to intervene positively on muscle metabolism. This narrative literature review was performed to evaluate evidence regarding the actual benefit of fish consumption in the prevention of sarcopenia and the positive action on the muscle mass of the biological compounds present in fish. The results demonstrated that fish consumption has a protective and anti-inflammatory function on skeletal muscle and that its biologically active compounds help to maintain good muscle performance, preventing sarcopenia. Considering the nutritional and health benefits, elderly with sarcopenia should consume at least three servings per week of fish in order to have a minimum intake of 4–4.59 g daily of omega 3, and reaching the 50% RDA in Vitamin E and D. High biological value of proteins in 150 g of fish and its high available magnesium (20% of RDA in 150 g of fish) are an added value that could suggest fish as a “functional food” in order to prevent and treat sarcopenia
A Multivariate Homogeneously Weighted Moving Average Control Chart
This paper presents a multivariate homogeneously weighted moving average (MHWMA) control chart for monitoring a process mean vector. The MHWMA control chart statistic gives a specific weight to the current observation, and the remaining weight is evenly distributed among the previous observations. We present the design procedure and compare the average run length (ARL) performance of the proposed chart with multivariate Chi-square, multivariate EWMA, and multivariate cumulative sum control charts. The ARL comparison indicates superior performance of the MHWMA chart over its competitors, particularly for the detection of small shifts in the process mean vector. Antimicrobial potential of alkaloids and flavonoids extracted from Tamarix aphylla leaves against common human pathogenic bacteria
Background: Alkaloids and flavonoids are secondary metabolites extracted from different medicinal plants. Tamarix aphylla a traditionally valuable medicinal plant; was used for the extraction of alkaloids and flavonoids in order to evaluate their antibacterial activity.Methodology: The leaves of the plant were collected from district Kohat, Pakistan, and their alkaloids and flavonoids were extracted with ethanol and methanol, respectively. Four bacteria i.e. Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram negative (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were selected for the biological screening of these phyto-constituents.Results: The concentration of alkaloids was found to be more in the leaves of Tamarix aphylla than flavonoids. The extracted phytochemicals showed varied inhibition zones against tested bacterial isolates. Alkaloids showed highest inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus (14±0.6 mm) followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (13±0.7 mm). Conversely, flavonoids showed the highest inhibitory affect against Salmonella typhi (17±0.7 mm) followed by Staphylococcus aureus (14±0.7 mm). However, both extracts showed the lowest inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli.Conclusions: It was concluded that the alkaloids and flavonoids from Tamarix aphylla leaves have antimicrobial potential against common human bacterial pathogens. However, flavonoids were found to be more active phytochemical against tested bacterial strains as compared to alkaloids.Keywords: Kohat; Medicinal plants; Phytochemical screening; In-vitro activity; Bacterial strains
Spectroscopy and excited-state g factors in weakly collective Cd 111: Confronting collective and microscopic models
Background: The even cadmium isotopes near the neutron midshell have long been considered among the best examples of vibrational nuclei. However, the vibrational nature of these nuclei has been questioned based on E2 transition rates that are not consistent with vibrational excitations. In the neighboring odd-mass nuclei, the g factors of the low-excitation collective states have been shown to be more consistent with a deformed rotational core than a vibrational core. Moving beyond the comparison of vibrational versus rotational models, recent advances in computational power have made shell-model calculations feasible for Cd isotopes. These calculations may give insights into the emergence and nature of collectivity in the Cd isotopes.This research was supported in part by the

Multivariate Technique for Detecting Variations in High-Dimensional Imagery
The field of immunology requires refined techniques to identify detailed cellular variance in high-dimensional images. Current methods mainly capture general immune cell proportion variations and often overlook specific deviations in individual patient samples from group baseline. We introduce a simple technique that integrates Hotelling's T2 statistic with random projection (RP) methods, specifically designed to identify changes in immune cell composition in high-dimensional images. Uniquely, our method provides deeper insights into individual patient samples, allowing for a clearer understanding of group differences. We assess the efficacy of the technique across various RPs: Achlioptas (AP), plus-minus one (PM), Li, and normal projections (NP), considering shift size, dimension reduction, and image dimensions. Simulations reveal variable detection performances across RPs, with PM outperforming and Li lagging. Practical tests using single-cell images of basophils (BAS) and promyelocytes (PMO) emphasise their utility for individualised detection. Our approach elevates high-dimensional image data analysis, particularly for identifying shifts in immune cell composition. This breakthrough potentially transforms healthcare practitioners' cellular interpretation of the immune landscape, promoting personalised patient care, and reshaping the discernment of diverse patient immune cell samples.Scopu
Thermoelectric Properties of Oxide Semiconductors
In this chapter, we have explored the potential of oxide semiconductors for thermoelectric power generation. Various oxides (Cu2InO4, CuAlO2, and Zn2GeO4) were grown on Si substrate by thermal evaporation method using tube furnace. After the growth, a representative sample of each oxide was cut into pieces and was annealed at various temperatures from 600 to 800°C in oxygen environment for 1 h using a programmable furnace. The structure of all annealed sample was verified by performing X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements. XRD data suggested that all oxide materials show crystalline behavior at annealing temperature 800°C. XRD results further confirmed that crystal structure of investigated samples improved significantly with annealing because the intensity of oxygen-sensitive (0 0 6) plane was found to be increased with annealing temperature. To investigate the thermoelectric properties of annealed samples, Seebeck effect and Hall effect measurements were performed in the temperature range 25–100°C. It was found that the value of Seebeck coefficient and power factor increased as the annealing temperature increases. Zn2GeO4 was found to be a potential thermoelectric material because it has the highest value of Seebeck coefficient and power factor. Predictive model for early detection of type 2 diabetes using patients' clinical symptoms, demographic features, and knowledge of diabetes
Background and Aims: With the global rise in type 2 diabetes, predictive modeling has become crucial for early detection, particularly in populations with low routine medical checkup profiles. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for type 2 diabetes using health check-up data focusing on clinical details, demographic features, biochemical markers, and diabetes knowledge. Methods: Data from 444 Nigerian patients were collected and analysed. We used 80% of this data set for training, and the remaining 20% for testing. Multivariable penalized logistic regression was employed to predict the disease onset, incorporating waist-hip ratio (WHR), triglycerides (TG), catalase, and atherogenic indices of plasma (AIP). Results: The predictive model demonstrated high accuracy, with an area under the curve of 99% (95% CI = 97%-100%) for the training set and 94% (95% CI = 89%-99%) for the test set. Notably, an increase in WHR (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 70.35; 95% CI = 10.04-493.1, p-value < 0.001) and elevated AIP (AOR = 4.55; 95% CI = 1.48-13.95, p-value = 0.008) levels were significantly associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, while higher catalase levels (AOR = 0.33; 95% CI = 0.22-0.49, p < 0.001) correlated with a decreased risk. In contrast, TG levels (AOR = 1.04; 95% CI = 0.40-2.71, p-value = 0.94) were not associated with the disease. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of using distinct clinical and biochemical markers for early type 2 diabetes detection in Nigeria, reflecting global trends in diabetes modeling, and highlighting the need for context-specific methods. The development of a web application based on these results aims to facilitate the early identification of individuals at risk, potentially reducing health complications, and improving diabetes management strategies in diverse settings.All authors confirm that no funding was involved in the study.
