Conceptual Challenges on the Road to the Multiverse

    Get PDF
The current debate about a possible change of paradigm from a single universe to a multiverse scenario could have deep implications on our view of cosmology and of science in general. These implications therefore deserve to be analyzed from a fundamental conceptual level. We briefly review the different multiverse ideas, both historically and within contemporary physics. We then discuss several positions within philosophy of science with regard to scientific progress, and apply these to the multiverse debate. Finally, we construct some key concepts for a physical multiverse scenario and discuss the challenges this scenario has to deal with in order to provide a solid, testable theory

Bifunctional chiral 2-aminobenzimidazole derivatives 1 and 2 catalyze the enantioselective stereodivergent α-chlorination of β-ketoesters and 1,3-diketone derivatives with up to 50% ee using N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) or 2,3,4,4,5,6-hexachloro-2,5-cyclohexadien-1-one as electrophilic chlorine sources.Financial support from the University of Alicante (VIGROB-173, VIGROB-285, GRE12-03, UAUSTI13-01, UAUSTI13-02), and Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (CTQ2011-24151) is acknowledged

Appearance of pyrophyllite as replacements of spiriferids (Brachiopoda) Shells of the devonian in the Central-Iberian zone (Hesperic Massif, Spain).

[Abstract] Amacroscopic pyrophyllite bearing mineralization related to shells ofspiriferids has beeen found in the Herrera Formation (southern Central-Iberian Zone, Hesperic Massif, Spain). The observed mineral asociation is pyrophyllite + nacrite + quartz + calcite + anhydrite, and it is interpreted as resulting from the substitution ofinitial carbonatic shell by a Si, Al, S rich hydrothermal solutio

    Decoherence in an accelerated universe

In this paper we study the decoherence processes of the semiclassical branches of an accelerated universe due to their interaction with a scalar field with given mass. We use a third quantization formalism to analyze the decoherence between two branches of a parent universe caused by their interaction with the vaccum fluctuations of the space-time, and with other parent unverses in a multiverse scenario.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

Incidence of Hypertension in a Cohort of Spanish University Graduates:The SUN Study

    Get PDF
Hypertension is a major public health problem. However, no estimates of age- and sex-specific incidences are available for the Spanish population. Our objective was to estimate the incidence of hypertension in a cohort of university graduates in Spain. We followed up 5648 individuals aged 25-65 years who were initially free of hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease for a median of 30 months. New diagnoses of hypertension were identified using mailed questionnaires. We validated the self-reported diagnosis of hypertension. In 18 250 person-years of follow-up, we identified 248 new cases of hypertension. The unadjusted incidences of hypertension in women and men were 8.2 per 1000 person-years (95% CI, 6.7-10.1) and 21.8 per 1000 person-years (95% CI, 18.6-25.4), respectively. The cumulative probability of receiving a medical diagnosis of hypertension by the age of 65 years was 50% among women and 72% among men. In conclusion, we have provided new evidence confirming that hypertension is one of the most important public health problems in Spain

Influence of Doping and Nanostructuration on n-Type Bi2(Te0.8Se0.2)3 Alloys Synthesized by Arc Melting

In competitive thermoelectric devices for energy conversion and generation, high-efficiency materials of both n-type and p-type are required. For this, Bi2Te3-based alloys have the best thermoelectric properties in room temperature applications. Partial replacement of tellurium by selenium is expected to introduce new donor states in the band gap, which would alter electrical conductivity and thermopower. We report on the preparation of n-type Bi2(Te1-xSex)3 solid solutions by a straightforward arc-melting technique, yielding nanostructured polycrystalline pellets. X-ray and neutron powder diffraction was used to assess Se inclusion, also indicating that the interactions between quintuple layers constituting this material are weakened upon Se doping, while the covalency of intralayer bonds is augmented. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy shows large surfaces perpendicular to the c crystallographic axis assembled as stacked sheets. Grain boundaries related to this 2D nanostructuration affect the thermal conductivity reducing it below 0.8 Wm−1K−1 at room temperature. Furthermore, Se doping increases the absolute Seebeck coefficient up to −140 μV K−1 at 400 K, which is also beneficial for improved thermoelectric efficiency. This research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitivity for granting the project MAT2013-41099-R.Peer reviewe

Interacting universes and the cosmological constant

    Get PDF
We study some collective phenomena that may happen in a multiverse scenario. First, it is posed an interaction scheme between universes whose evolution is dominated by a cosmological constant. As a result of the interaction, the value of the cosmological constant of one of the universes becomes very close to zero at the expense of an increasing value of the cosmological constant of the partner universe. Second, we found normal modes for a 'chain' of interacting universes. The energy spectrum of the multiverse, being this taken as a collective system, splits into a large number of levels, some of which correspond to a value of the cosmological constant very close to zero. We finally point out that the multiverse may be much more than the mere sum of its parts.Comment: 7 page
