Harvesting sustainable energy from saltwater, part II: effect of electrode geometry.

    Get PDF
Green energy or renewable energy is a widely and commonly used terminology when depicting the energy generated from natural resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass and hydropower. One energy resource, in particular, has yet to unleash its potential is the saltwater energy. When salt is dissolved in the water, the ionic compounds of sodium and chlorine are separated, thus allowing the free movement of ions in the solution. This study is the second part of the development phase in producing a low cost saltwater lamp for rural and remote communities in Malaysia. This study specifically focuses on the dimension and geometry of the aluminium electrodes as well as the types of carbon electrodes used. This study is important in determining the most cost effective electrodes to be used in the saltwater lamp

The borderland of migraine with aura: episodic unilateral mydriasis

    Get PDF
We present the case of a patient who had a 3-year history of episodes of transitory unilateral mydriasis with omolateral blurred vision followed by headache. Thereafter, during the last 4 years, the patient developed a migraine with visual aura, without further episodes of transitory mydriasis. We suggest that the transitory mydriasis previously present could be considered as an unusual form of migrainous aura. A possible pathogenetic mechanism is proposed

BAYESIAN PREDICTION METHOD FOR SHADOW DETECTION AND RECONSTRUCTION IN HSR IMAGES USING MORPHOLOGICAL FILTER

Several approaches are exists today according to color, intensity and saturation value etc that are very less accurate. Within this paper, we advise alternative shadow recognition formula according to thresholding and morphological filtering, along with an alternate shadow renovation formula in line with the example learning method and Markov random field (MRF). The primary purpose of this project is recognition and renovation of shadows from VHSR images. Removing or alleviating the instants while using shadows in HSR images for more processing is an extremely important task because the shadows are induce to loss or miss conjecture of radiometric information and induce to image interpretation. Throughout the shadow recognition procedure, the bimodal distributions of pixel values within the near-infrared (NIR) band and also the panchromatic band are adopted for thresholding. Throughout the shadow renovation procedure, we model the connection between non shadow and also the corresponding shadow pixels and between neighboring no shadow pixels by using MRF. With extension for this paper we advise Bayesian conjecture way of accurate conjecture of shadow. Within this paper for accurate shadow recognition we combine thresholding and morphological filtering concepts. This shadow recognition includes Thresholding, Morphological filtering and edge compensation stages

Tropical forest succession increases taxonomic and functional tree richness but decreases evenness

Aim: Successional changes in functional diversity provide insights into community assembly by indicating how species are filtered into local communities based on their traits. Here, we assess successional changes in taxonomic and functional richness, evenness and redundancy along gradients of climate, soil pH and forest cover. Location: Neotropics. Time period: Last 0–100 years. Major taxa studied: Trees. Methods: We used 22 forest chronosequence studies and 676 plots across the Neotropics to analyse successional changes in Hill's taxonomic and functional diversity of trees, and how these successional changes vary with continental-scale gradients in precipitation, soil pH and surrounding forest cover. Results: Taxonomic and functional richness and functional redundancy increased, while taxonomic and functional evenness decreased over time. Functional richness and evenness changed strongly when not accounting for taxonomic richness, but changed more weakly after statistically accounting for taxonomic richness, indicating that changes in functional diversity are largely driven by taxonomic richness. Nevertheless, the successional increases in functional richness when correcting for taxonomic richness may indicate that environmental heterogeneity and limiting similarity increase during succession. The taxonomically-independent successional decreases in functional evenness may indicate that stronger filtering and competition select for dominant species with similar trait values, while many rare species and traits are added to the community. Such filtering and competition may also lead to increased functional redundancy. The changes in taxonomically-independent functional diversity varied with resource availability and were stronger in harsh, resource-poor environments, but weak in benign, productive environments. Hence, in resource-poor environments, environmental filtering and facilitation are important, whereas in productive environments, weaker abiotic filtering allows for high initial functional diversity and weak successional changes. Main conclusion: We found that taxonomic and functional richness and functional redundancy increased and taxonomic and functional evenness decreased during succession, mainly caused by the increasing number of rare species and traits due to the arrival of new species and due to changing (a)biotic filters

Frequency dependence of electroluminescence measurement in LDPE.

A good insulator for high voltage cable has low dielectric loss, reasonable flexibility and thermo-mechanically stable. However, prolonged application of electrical stresses on the cable will degraded the cable; physically and morphologically. Electrical degradation in high voltage cable can be detected using electroluminescence (EL) method. Electroluminescence is a phenomenon that occurs when the atoms of a material are being excited due to the application of and external high electrical stresses. There are several external factors that affect the behaviour of electroluminescence emission such as, applied voltage, applied frequency, ageing of material and types of materials. In this paper, the EL measurement is employed to determine the effect of applied frequency on virgin LDPE at fixed and varying applied voltage. It can be observed that EL emission increases as applied frequency increases with increasing voltage applied. However, interesting EL behaviour is observed when varying frequency is applied from 10 Hz to 100 Hz
