    An Electromechanical Which-Path Interferometer

    We investigate the possibility of an electromechanical which-path interferometer, in which electrons travelling through an Aharonov-Bohm ring incorporating a quantum dot in one of the arms are dephased by an interaction with the fundamental flexural mode of a radio frequency cantilever. The cantilever is positioned so that its tip lies just above the dot and a bias is applied so that an electric field exists between the dot and the tip. This electric field is modified when an additional electron hops onto the dot, coupling the flexural mode of the cantilever and the microscopic electronic degrees of freedom. We analyze the transmission properties of this system and the dependence of interference fringe visibility on the cantilever-dot coupling and on the mechanical properties of the cantilever. The fringes are progressively destroyed as the interaction with the cantilever is turned up, in part due to dephasing arising from the entanglement of the electron and cantilever states and also due to the thermal smearing that results from fluctuations in the state of the cantilever. When the dwell time of the electron on the dot is comparable to or longer than the cantilever period, we find coherent features in the transmission amplitude. These features are washed out when the cantilever is decohered by its coupling to the environment.Comment: 38 pages, 7 figure

    We present a semiclassical analysis of the instability of an electron shuttle composed of three quantum dots: two are fixed and coupled via leads to electron resevoirs at different chemical potentials, while the central dot is mounted on a classical harmonic oscillator. The semiclassical analysis, which is valid if the central dot oscillation amplitude is larger than the quantum mechanical zero point motion, can be used to gain additional insight about the relationship of resonances and instabilities of the device.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, presented at EP2DS-15, Nara, July 200

    Performance analysis for partial feedback downlink MIMO with unitary codebook beamforming for LTE

    Until recently, mobile communication tasks have been grouped into different layers in a hierarchical layer approach. In this conventional approach, layer-specific protocols are developed and optimised independently. As new wireless applications emerge, requiring high data rates and flexibility for supporting applications with significantly varying QoS requirements, it has become imperative that a higher level of communication between adjacent layers needs to be established. A unitary codebook based beamforming approach has been proposed for LTE that incorporates an improved cross-layer interface in order to improve service to users according to specified QoS criteria. This paper examines this beamforming approach under partial feedback conditions for different MIMO configurations. It is shown that non-obvious precoding matrix selection strategies and scheduling policies for the DLC, can achieve superior performance for LTE system, whilst meeting the QoS requirements of urgent users.Until recently, mobile communication tasks have been grouped into different layers in a hierarchical layer approach.     Stability of Few-Charge Systems in Quantum Mechanics

    We consider non-relativistic systems in quantum mechanics interacting through the Coulomb potential, and discuss the existence of bound states which are stable against spontaneous dissociation into smaller atoms or ions. We review the studies that have been made of specific mass configurations and also the properties of the domain of stability in the space of masses or inverse masses. These rigorous results are supplemented by numerical investigations using accurate variational methods.
