Spectrometric characterization of amorphous silicon PIN detectors

    Get PDF
During the last years, much interest has been dedicated to the use of amorphous silicon PIN diodes as particle and radiation detectors for medical applications. This work presents the spectrometric characterization of PECVD high deposition rate diodes fabricated at our laboratory, with thickness up to 17.5 μm. Results show that the studied devices detect the Am^(241) alpha particles and the medical X-rays generated by a mammograph model Senographe 700T from General Electric. Possible reasons of the observed energy losses are discussed in the lest. Using the SRIM2000 program, the transit of 5.5 MeV alpha particles through a diode was simulated, determining the optimum thickness for these particles to deposit their energy in the intrinsic layer of the diode

Full predicate coverage for testing SQL database queries

    Get PDF
In the field of database applications a considerable part of the business logic is implemented using a semi-declarative language: the Structured Query Language (SQL). Because of the different semantics of SQL compared to other procedural languages, the conventional coverage criteria for testing are not directly applicable. This paper presents a criterion specifically tailored for SQL queries (SQLFpc). It is based on Masking Modified Condition Decision Coverage (MCDC) or Full Predicate Coverage and takes into account a wide range of the syntax and semantics of SQL, including selection, joining, grouping, aggregations, subqueries, case expressions and null values. The criterion assesses the coverage of the test data in relation to the query that is executed and it is expressed as a set of rules that are automatically generated and efficiently evaluated against a test database. The use of the criterion is illustrated in a case study which includes complex querie

Analysis of the existence of major genes affecting alpaca fiber traits

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to determine the presence of major genes for fiber diameter (FD), SD of FD (SDFD), CV of FD, and comfort factor (CF) in Huacaya (HU) and Suri (SU) Peruvian alpaca breeds. Bayesian segregation analyses with relaxed transmission probabilities were performed using 1,906 and 6,592 available records for SU and HU breeds. Evidence for the presence of major genes was statistically supported when the 95% posterior density did not include zero. Significant major genes were found associated with decreased FD, SDFD, CV values, and increased CF values. Additive effects of the major genes were 4.18 and 4.23 μm for FD, 1.67 and 1.61 μm for SDFD, 3.32 and 3.76% for CV, and 15.03 and 14.90% for CF in HU and SU breeds, respectively. Dominance effects were -1.98 and -2.03 μm for FD, -0.88 and -1.11 μm for SDFD, -1.37 and -2.17% for CV, and 13.0 and 11.8% for CF in HU and SU breeds, respectively. Major gene variance was larger than the polygenic variance for all traits. Major gene allelic frequencies for FD, SDFD, and CV ranged from 0.81 to 0.86 for HU breed and from 0.70 to 0.77 for the SU breed and were 0.24 and 0.36, respectively, for CF. It can be concluded that a major gene affecting these traits could be segregating. Then, molecular identification and monitoring of animals carrying favorable genes throughout the worldwide alpaca population would allow for a quick genetic improvement

Deposition reactors for solar grade silicon: a comparative thermal analysis of a Siemens reactor and a fluidized bed reactor

    Get PDF
Polysilicon production costs contribute approximately to 25-33% of the overall cost of the solar panels and a similar fraction of the total energy invested in their fabrication. Understanding the energy losses and the behaviour of process temperature is an essential requirement as one moves forward to design and build large scale polysilicon manufacturing plants. In this paper we present thermal models for two processes for poly production, viz., the Siemens process using trichlorosilane (TCS) as precursor and the fluid bed process using silane (monosilane, MS).We validate the models with some experimental measurements on prototype laboratory reactors relating the temperature profiles to product quality. A model sensitivity analysis is also performed, and the efects of some key parameters such as reactor wall emissivity, gas distributor temperature, etc., on temperature distribution and product quality are examined. The information presented in this paper is useful for further understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of both deposition technologies, and will help in optimal temperature profiling of these systems aiming at lowering production costs without compromising the solar cell quality

    Coverage-aware test database reduction

    Get PDF
Functional testing of applications that process the information stored in databases often requires a careful design of the test database. The larger the test database, the more difficult it is to develop and maintain tests as well as to load and reset the test data. This paper presents an approach to reduce a database with respect to a set of SQL queries and a coverage criterion. The reduction procedures search the rows in the initial database that contribute to the coverage in order to find a representative subset that satisfies the same coverage as the initial database. The approach is automated and efficiently executed against large databases and complex queries. The evaluation is carried out over two real life applications and a well-known database benchmark. The results show a very large degree of reduction as well as scalability in relation to the size of the initial database and the time needed to perform the reductio

Ant-mediated seed dispersal in a warmed world

    Get PDF
Climate change affects communities both directly and indirectly via changes in interspecific interactions. One such interaction that may be altered under climate change is the ant-plant seed dispersal mutualism common in deciduous forests of eastern North America. As climatic warming alters the abundance and activity levels of ants, the potential exists for shifts in rates of ant-mediated seed dispersal. We used an experimental temperature manipulation at two sites in the eastern US (Harvard Forest in Massachusetts and Duke Forest in North Carolina) to examine the potential impacts of climatic warming on overall rates of seed dispersal (using Asarum canadense seeds) as well as species-specific rates of seed dispersal at the Duke Forest site. We also examined the relationship between ant critical thermal maxima (CTmax) and the mean seed removal temperature for each ant species. We found that seed removal rates did not change as a result of experimental warming at either study site, nor were there any changes in species-specific rates of seed dispersal. There was, however, a positive relationship between CTmax and mean seed removal temperature, whereby species with higher CTmax removed more seeds at hotter temperatures. The temperature at which seeds were removed was influenced by experimental warming as well as diurnal and day-to-day fluctuations in temperature. Taken together, our results suggest that while temperature may play a role in regulating seed removal by ants, ant plant seed-dispersal mutualisms may be more robust to climate change than currently assumed

Genetic parameters and relationships between fibre and type traits in two breeds of Peruvian alpacas

Four fibre traits (fibre diameter, FD; coefficient of variation of FD, comfort factor; and standard deviation of FD) were jointly analysed with six subjectively scored type traits (fleece density, crimp, lock structure, head, coverage, and balance) in two breeds of Peruvian Altiplano alpaca (Suri, SU; and Huacayo, HU) to ascertain their genetic relationship. A total of 2405 fibre records and 2194 type scores were available for the HU breed whereas these figures were 709 for fibre records and 650 for type scores for the SU breed. Estimated heritabilities for fibre traits were moderate to high, ranging from 0.565 to 0.699 in the SU breed and from 0.255 to 0.417 in the HU breed. Genetic and permanent environmental correlations between fibre related traits were extremely similar across breeds suggesting that these traits are fairly the same. Heritabilities estimated for the type traits tended to be lower than those estimated for the fibre traits particularly in the SU breed (ranging from 0.173 to 0.272). Fibre and type traits were, in general, genetically poorly correlated except for crimp in the HU breed, which had favourable correlations, from moderate to high, for fibre traits. In Altiplano areas in which fibre performance recording could not be implemented, crimp scoring makes it feasible to carry out mass selection in the Huacayo breed and furthermore include rural communities in national or regional selection programmes

Trisomy of a Down Syndrome Critical Region Globally Amplifies Transcription via HMGN1 Overexpression

Down syndrome (DS, trisomy 21) is associated with developmental abnormalities and increased leukemia risk. To reconcile chromatin alterations with transcriptome changes, we performed paired exogenous spike-in normalized RNA and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing in DS models. Absolute normalization unmasks global amplification of gene expression associated with trisomy 21. Overexpression of the nucleosome binding protein HMGN1 (encoded on chr21q22) recapitulates transcriptional changes seen with triplication of a Down syndrome critical region on distal chromosome 21, and HMGN1 is necessary for B cell phenotypes in DS models. Absolute exogenous-normalized chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-Rx) also reveals a global increase in histone H3K27 acetylation caused by HMGN1. Transcriptional amplification downstream of HMGN1 is enriched for stage-specific programs of B cells and B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, dependent on the developmental cellular context. These data offer a mechanistic explanation for DS transcriptional patterns and suggest that further study of HMGN1 and RNA amplification in diverse DS phenotypes is warranted. How trisomy 21 contributes to Down syndrome phenotypes, including increased leukemia risk, is not well understood. Mowery et al. use per-cell normalization approaches to reveal global transcriptional amplification in Down syndrome models. HMGN1 overexpression is sufficient to induce these alterations and promotes lineage-associated transcriptional programs, signaling, and B cell progenitor phenotypes
