Laser-based X-ray and electron source for X-ray fluorescence studies

In this work we present a modification to conventional X-rays fluorescence using electrons as excitation source, and compare it with the traditional X-ray excitation for the study of pigments. For this purpose we have constructed a laser-based source capable to produce X-rays as well as electrons. Because of the large penetration depth of X-rays, the collected fluorescence signal is a combination of several material layers of the artwork under study. However electrons are stopped in the first layers allowing therefore a more superficial analysis. We show that the combination of both excitation sources can provide extremely valuable information about the structure of the artwork

Papel del logopeda en un centro gerontológico de estancias diurnas

[Resumen] El aumento de población anciana en nuestra sociedad es un hecho que ha provocado la aparición de nuevos recursos socio-sanitarios que cubran sus necesidades. El Centro Gerontológico de Estancias Diurnas es un servicio multidisciplinar diurno que se ocupa de la atención social y sanitaria, con actuación terapéutica y preventiva, de los mayores facilitando la vida laboral de las personas que se ocupan ordinariamente de su cuidado. Los centros de día deben proporcionar una atención integral debiendo, por tanto, estar constituidos por un equipo profesional multidisciplinar en el que la figura del logopeda esté presente desarrollando una labor específica. Parece, por tanto, interesante delimitar las funciones básicas a desempeñar, los trastornos más comunes susceptibles de intervención, así como, algunas directrices a tener en cuenta.[Abstract] The increase of the senior population in our society is an event that has provoked the appeareance of a new sort of social and sanitary recource, a structure that has to be concerned with the needs of this population. The gerontologic day-center is in brief a multidisciplinar service, that works during day time, treating the social and sanitary occupation of our elder with both therapeutic and preventive acts. This to provide a normal working life for the people who are usually taking care of these people. Day-centers have to answer these needs with a complete service, and for that reason they have to apile to a multidisciplinar staff in wich the speech-therapist develops a specific role. It seems though interesting to define the basic functions that a professional speech-therapist has to perform, such as the most common disorders capable of treatment and general intervention, as well derectives to bear in mind

Effect of Disorder on Ultrafast Exciton Dynamics Probed by Single Molecule Spectroscopy

We present a single-molecule study unraveling the effect of static disorder on the vibrational-assisted ultrafast exciton dynamics in multichromophoric systems. For every single complex, we probe the initial exciton relaxation process by an ultrafast pump-probe approach and the coupling to vibrational modes by emission spectra, while fluorescence lifetime analysis measures the amount of static disorder. Exploiting the wide range of disorder found from complex to complex, we demonstrate that static disorder accelerates the dephasing and energy relaxation rate of the exciton

Evaluación y resultados de la instauración de un programa de terapia de grupo dirigido a un colectivo de cuidadores familiares de enfermos de Alzheimer

[Resumen] La terapia de grupo es una de las actividades que se han mostrado más positivas como apoyo a los cuidadores familiares de enfermos de Alzheimer; por ello, en este trabajo pre - sentamos un programa de ayuda a cuidadores de enfermos de Alzheimer, en donde la terapia de grupo es una de las actividades establecidas con dos funciones; por un lado contrarrestar el aislamiento de los cuidadores; mientras que por el otro será ayudarlos a superar los sentimientos negativos que suscitan su situación. Los resultados que presentamos, corresponden a un periodo de intervención de seis meses, valorados mediante el STAI; en ellos se muestra como muy afectiva tanto para la reducción de la ansiedad como para el establecimiento de un sistema de comunicación acerca de la problemática común y de la búsqueda de soluciones percibiendo los cuidado - res estas actuaciones como excelentes para su bienestar.[Abstract] The group therapy is one of the activities that have been shown more positive as sup - port to the family caregivers of AD; for it, in this work we introduce a program of help to caregivers; where the group therapyl is one of the established activities with two functions: counteracting the isolation of the caregivers and helping them to overcome the negative fee - lings that raise their situation. The results that we present, correspond to a period of intervention of six months, valued by the STAI. Results point out to be very effective for the reduction of the anxiety like for the establishment of a communication system about the common problem and the search of solutions, perceiving the caregivers these performances as excellent for their wellfare

Purification of a lectin from Eugenia uniflora L. seeds and its potential antibacterial activity

Aims: The aim of this work was to analyse the antimicrobial properties of a purified lectin from Eugenia uniflora L. seeds. Methods and Results: The E. uniflora lectin (EuniSL) was isolated from the seed extract and purified by ion-exchange chromatography in DEAE-Sephadex with a purification factor of 11·68. The purified lectin showed a single band on denaturing electrophoresis, with a molecular mass of 67 kDa. EuniSL agglutinated rabbit and human erythrocytes with a higher specificity for rabbit erythrocytes. The haemagglutination was not inhibited by the tested carbohydrates but glycoproteins exerted a strong inhibitory action. The lectin proved to be thermo resistant with the highest stability at pH 6·5 and divalent ions did not affect its activity. EuniSL demonstrated a remarkable nonselective antibacterial activity. EuniSL strongly inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella sp. with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1·5 μg ml−1, and moderately inhibited the growth of Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus sp. and Escherichia coli with a MIC of 16·5 μg ml−1. Conclusions: EuniSL was found to be effective against bacteria. Assessment of the periodontal health status and gingival recession during orthodontic treatment with clear aligners and fixed appliances: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background: The aim was to assess periodontal health maintenance and gingival recessions development in pa-tients undergoing an orthodontic treatment with clear aligners (CA) and fixed appliances (FA).Material and Methods: An electronic search in MEDLINE, Scopus, The Cochrane Library, and Web of Science was performed up to September 2022 to identify all potential articles. Two investigators independently selected the studies according to the inclusion criteria. Prospective and retrospective studies assessing the periodontal health status and gingival recession development during the orthodontic treatment with buccal FA and CA were included. Case series, cross-sectional studies, and studies with less than two months of follow-up were excluded. Two investigators independently extracted the data from included articles and assessed risk of bias across studies using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the data were performed. Pairwise meta-analysis using a random-effects model were used to compare periodontal indices between FA and CA treat-ment in different follow-up periods.Results: From the 129 potential studies, finally 12 studies were included. Only 8 could be included in the quantita-tive analysis. CA seems to slightly maintain better periodontal health indices. Only plaque index in a mid-term follow-up (mean difference (MD):-0.99; 95%; Confidence interval (CI) [-1.94 to-0.03]; P=.04; I2=99%), and pocket probing depth at a long-term follow-up (MD: -0.93mm; 95% CI [-1.16 to 0.7]; P<0.0001) reported statisti-cally significant results favoring CA.Conclusions: Up to the date there is not enough evidence to conclude that CA maintains better periodontal health during an orthodontic treatment than FA

Upwind Finite Element-PML Approximation of a Novel Linear Potential Model for Free Surface Flows Produced by a Floating Rigid Body

[Abstract] A novel linear potential model is presented to compute free surface flows of incompressible fluids produced by the motion of a floating rigid body in the presence of an underlying non-uniform flow. In particular, the proposed model enables the accurate numerical simulation of the Kelvin wake pattern in a computational domain of reduced size. The governing equations are obtained by using an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation which involves the underlying velocity of the fluid around the floating body assuming flat free surface, and a non-dimensional analysis to derive the novel linear system of equations for free surface flows. The discretization of the proposed model is made by a standard Galerkin finite element method, where a SUPG-inspired upwinding strategy has been used in combination with a Perfectly Matched Layer technique which allows truncating the original unbounded fluid domain without introducing spurious reflections in the Kelvin wake pattern. The numerical simulations computed with the proposed approach are compared with the results obtained by the classical linear potential model with uniform underlying flow and also with those from the full incompressible Navier–Stokes equations equipped with the k−ω SST turbulent model. La experimentación cromática-sonora en el arte: una reflexión sobre los intentos de vinculación entre ambos universos

The article centred on the senses of sight and hearing in audio-visual art. We could find a large number of synaesthetic experiences in the field, by avant-garde artists such as Wassily Kandinsky or Oskar Fischinger. In general, most of the proposals were abstract, in reference to the essential abstraction of music. This art form was a model for artists attempting to connect «sound and colour». Abstract cinema is closely related, and often subordinate, to music. Intuitively, we tend to establish relations of two basic types between the two perceptive universes: one in which psycho-perceptive aspects and another in which symbolic aspects are predominant. Evidently, the two types cannot be considered to be completely isolated, since intermediate cases are possible. We can also refer to formal and intuitive models as particular cases in which creative experiments have taken place.El tema del artículo se centra en la relación entre los sentidos de la vista y la audición en el arte audiovisual. Podríamos ver numerosas experiencias sinestésicas en tal campo, tales como las que hicieron los artistas de la Vanguardia Wassily Kandinsky u Oskar Fischinger. Por lo general la mayoría de las propuestas fueron abstractas, en referencia con la abstracción esencial de la música. Esta forma de arte funcionó como modelo para los artistas que intentaban conectar «sonido y color». El cine abstracto está fuertemente relacionado con la música y podríamos decir que a menudo subordinada a ésta. Intuitivamente tendemos a establecer entre ambos universos perceptivos relaciones de dos tipos fundamentales: uno en que dominan los aspectos psico-perceptivos y otro en el que lo hacen los simbólicos. Evidentemente ambos tipos no pueden considerarse aislados por completo puesto que pueden darse casos intermedios. También podemos hablar acerca de los modelos formal e intuitivo como de casos particulares entre los cuales han tenido lugar experimentos creativos
