A workshop was organised to ascertain the current situation with regard to morbillivirus infections in aquatic animals. The great interest generated by the discovery of these new virus infections in 1988 has to some extent abated but much high quality research has continued in this field as the workshop showed. There is some serological evidence that the viruses have continued to circulate in most areas since the initial epizootics. As to their origin, it appears that the most likely source of the European seal morbillivirus (PDV-1) is the North Atlantic and Artic seal populations. As to the origin of the Mediterranean dolphin morbillivirus and the morbilliviruses isolated from porpoises, there is serological evidence that the viruses are widespread in many cetacean species in the Atlantic and 93% of long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas) which mass stranded between 1982 and 1993 were morbillivirus seropositive. The epizootic in freshwater seals in Lake Baikal was unrelated to events in the European marine mammal populations. The virus which infected these animals (PDV-2) is indistinguishable from canine distemper field strains. Serological and molecular biological studies provided evidence for the presence of the virus in the seals, at least as late as the Summer of 1992 when the animals were last sampled

UMR AGAP - équipe AFEF - Architecture et fonctionnement des espèces fruitièresIn temperate trees, growth resumption in spring time results from chilling and heat requirements, and is an adaptive trait under global warming. Here, the genetic determinism of budbreak and flowering time was deciphered using five related full-sib apple families. Both traits were observed over 3 years and two sites and expressed in calendar and degree-days. Best linear unbiased predictors of genotypic effect or interaction with climatic year were extracted from mixed linear models and used for quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping, performed with an integrated genetic map containing 6849 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), grouped into haplotypes, and with a Bayesian pedigree-based analysis. Four major regions, on linkage group (LG) 7, LG10, LG12, and LG9, the latter being the most stable across families, sites, and years, explained 5.6–21.3% of trait variance. Co-localizations for traits in calendar days or growing degree hours (GDH) suggested common genetic determinism for chilling and heating requirements. Homologs of two major flowering genes, AGL24 and FT, were predicted close to LG9 and LG12 QTLs, respectively, whereas Dormancy Associated MADs-box (DAM) genes were near additional QTLs on LG8 and LG15. This suggests that chilling perception mechanisms could be common among perennial and annual plants. Progenitors with favorable alleles depending on trait and LG were identified and could benefit new breeding strategies for apple adaptation to temperature increase

Emerging and recurring diseases in cetaceans worldwide and the role of environmental stressors. Scientific Committee Document SC/60/DW5, International Whaling Commission, June 2008, Santiago, Chile

Emerging and recurring infectious diseases known or suspected to have the potential to significantly impact cetacean populations, and possible synergistic effects of environmental factors are reviewed. Cetacean morbilliviruses and papillomaviruses and brucellosis may affect population densities through high mortality rates or interference with reproduction. Evidence is available for the role of environmental factors in the emergence/recurrence and severity of at least six infectious conditions i.e. lobomycosis, toxoplasmosis, tattoo skin disease, generalized bacterial infections, miscellaneous skin diseases and morbillivirus epizootics. Other micro-parasites of potential importance include rhabdo-, herpes- and parainfluenza-viruses as well as Helicobacter spp., Streptococcus spp., Salmonella spp. and Mycobacterium marinum. The population impact and aetiology of newly emerging skin diseases in South America are unknown and represent a cause of concern

EX-TRACT: An excel tool for the estimation of standard deviations from published articles

Meta-analysis, power analysis, and sensitivity analysis are widespread statistical techniques, which can be correctly performed only if variability statistics, such as standard deviation, are available; however, standard deviations are often missing in published articles. This work illustrates the functionality and the versatility of a newly developed Excel© tool for the standard deviation extraction from ANOVA and Multiple Comparison Test (MCT) results. The tool implements four methods, which can be alternatively applied according to the available statistics usually reported in ANOVA and/or MCT tables and graphs: 1) least significant difference (LSD), 2) significance level (p(F)), 3) letters for means separation assigned by MCT, 4) a range of significance level, indicated by "stars". The tool can be applied in one, two and three-way factorial experiments arranged in complete randomization, randomized block, split-plot or split-block. The performances of the different methods were tested in a case study about meta-analysis database preparation

Entrepreneurial intention studies: A hybrid bibliometric method to identify new directions for theory and research

Get PDF
Fragmentation is the main obstacle to scientific progress on entrepreneurial intention. To address this issue, we systematise the current literature with a hybrid bibliometric method that combines co-citation and bibliographic coupling analysis for the first time in entrepreneurial intention studies to show the field's knowledge base and research fronts and to examine how divergent perspectives have challenged the core knowledge of the field. We highlight three recurring dimensions of entrepreneurial intention studies: (1) personal factors, (2) social factors and (3) investigational settings. In addition to introducing new constructs, divergent perspectives have emphasised the interplay between these components and challenged the mechanisms connecting them. Based on these findings, we extend previous classifications in the literature by providing a framework that integrates divergent perspectives with the field's knowledge base, helping establish future research avenues and improving the theorising process of entrepreneurial intention

First Evidence of Environmental Formation of Sulfonated PCBs

Several types of metabolites can be produced from the environmental degradation of PCBs such as OH-PCBs, sulfated PCBs, methoxylated PCBs, and others. However, while sulfonated and OH-sulfonated PCBs were recently found in soil, little information is available on their formation and their environmental path. In this study, the environmental formation of OH-sulfonated and sulfonated PCBs was shown for the first time in treatments using eight PCB congeners as a carbon source in a flask experiment. Here, 10 environmental inocula from different sources were tested to evaluate, in a semiquantitative way, the formation of OH-sulfonated and sulfonated PCBs. OH-PCBs were also monitored, as they represent one of the first degradation steps of PCBs. All inocula could generate these metabolites, although the number of congeners varied greatly. In general, OH-PCBs and OH-sulfonated PCBs were produced at the highest concentrations. For sulfonated PCBs, the highest number of congeners was produced from an inoculum derived from plant leaves and from a PCB-contaminated site. The results show that OH-sulfonated and sulfonated PCBs can be environmentally formed by microbial inocula, even by the generalist ones, not specifically selected in PCB rich environments

Cetacean Morbillivirus: Current knowledge and future directions

We review the molecular and epidemiological characteristics of cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV) and the diagnosis and pathogenesis of associated disease, with six different strains detected in cetaceans worldwide. CeMV has caused epidemics with high mortality in odontocetes in Europe, the USA and Australia. It represents a distinct species within the Morbillivirus genus. Although most CeMV strains are phylogenetically closely related, recent data indicate that morbilliviruses recovered from Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), from Western Australia, and a Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis), from Brazil, are divergent. The signaling lymphocyte activation molecule (SLAM) cell receptor for CeMV has been characterized in cetaceans. It shares higher amino acid identity with the ruminant SLAM than with the receptors of carnivores or humans, reflecting the evolutionary history of these mammalian taxa. In Delphinidae, three amino acid substitutions may result in a higher affinity for the virus. Infection is diagnosed by histology, immunohistochemistry, virus isolation, RT-PCR, and serology. Classical CeMV-associated lesions include bronchointerstitial pneumonia, encephalitis, syncytia, and lymphoid depletion associated with immunosuppression. Cetaceans that survive the acute disease may develop fatal secondary infections and chronic encephalitis. Endemically infected, gregarious odontocetes probably serve as reservoirs and vectors. Transmission likely occurs through the inhalation of aerosolized virus but mother to fetus transmission was also reported
