Extinction and Distance to Anomalous X-ray Pulsars from X-ray Scattering Halos
We analyze the X-ray scattering halos around three Galactic Anomalous X-ray
Pulsars (AXPs) in order to constrain the distance and the optical extinction of
each source. We obtain surface brightness distributions from EPIC-pn data
obtained with XMM-Newton, compare the profiles of different sources, and fit
them with a model based on the standard theory of X-ray scattering by dust
grains, both for a uniform distribution of dust along the line of sight, and
for dust distributions constrained by previous measurements. Somewhat
surprisingly, we find that for all three sources, the uniform distribution
reproduces the observed surface brightness as well as or better than the
distributions that are informed by previous constraints. Nevertheless, the
inferred total dust columns are robust, and serve to confirm that previous
measurements based on interstellar edges in high-resolution X-ray spectra and
on modelling of broad-band X-ray spectra were reliable. Specifically, we find
Av ~= 4, 6, and 8 mag for 4U 0142+61, 1E 1048.1-5937, and 1RXS
J170849.0-400910, respectively. For 1E 1048.1-5937, this is well in excess of
the extinction expected towards a HI bubble along the line of sight, thus
casting further doubt on the suggested association with the source.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Spatial and temporal variation in otolith chemistry for tautog (Tautoga onitis) in Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island coastal ponds
The elemental composition of otoliths may provide valuable
information for establishing connectivity between fish nursery grounds and adult fish populations. Concentrations
of Rb, Mg, Ca, Mn, Sr, Na, K, Sr, Pb, and Ba were determined
by using solution-based inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in otoliths of young-of-the year tautog
(Tautoga onitis) captured in nursery areas along the Rhode Island coast during two consecutive years. Stable oxygen (δ18O) and carbon (δ13C) isotopic ratios in young-of-the year otoliths were also analyzed with isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Chemical signatures differed significantly
among the distinct nurseries within Narragansett Bay and the coastal ponds across years. Significant differences
were also observed within nurseries from year to year. Classification accuracy to each of the five tautog nursery areas ranged from 85% to 92% across years. Because accurate
classification of juvenile tautog nursery sites was achieved, otolith chemistry can potentially be used as
a natural habitat tag

Cancer Risk from Exposure to Galactic Cosmic Rays - Implications for Human Space Exploration
Current space programs are shifting toward planetary exploration, and in particular towards human missions to the moon and Mars. However, space radiation is a major barrier to human exploration of the solar system because the biological effects of high-energy and charge (HZE) ions, which are the main contributors to radiation risks in deep space, are poorly understood. Predictions of the nature and magnitude of the risks posed by space radiation are subject to very large uncertainties. Great efforts have been dedicated worldwide in recent years toward a better understanding of the oncogenic potential of galactic cosmic rays. A review of the new results in this field will be presented here
Religiosity and Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Latina Adolescents: Trends from 1995 to 2008
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine trends in the influence of religiosity on sexual activity of Latina adolescents in the United States from 1995 to 2008 and to determine if differences existed between the Mexican American and other Latina groups.
Methods: The sample comprised the subset of unmarried, 15–21-year-old (mean 17 years) Latina female respondents in the 1995 (n=267), 2002 (n=306), and 2006–2008 (n=400) National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) datasets. Associations between religiosity (importance of religion and service attendance) and history of ever having sex, number of sex partners, and age of sexual debut were investigated.
Results: Less than one half of Latinas in 1995 (44%) and in 2006–2008 (44%) reported that religion was very important to them, whereas in 2002, 50% reported it was important. Only in 1995 did Latinas who viewed religion as very important have a significantly lower level of sexual initiation. In 1995 and in 2006–2008, Latinas who held religion as very important had significantly fewer partners. In all three cohorts, the higher religious importance group had higher virgin survival rates. Across cohorts, approximately one third of respondents reported frequent religious attendance. In all cohorts, frequent attenders were less likely to have had sex, had fewer partners, and had older age at sexual debut. The survival rate as virgins for Mexican origin Latinas was higher in 1995 and 2002 compared to non-Mexican Latinas but was almost the same in 2006–2008.
Conclusions: Religiosity had a protective association with sexual activity among Latina adolescents. The association of importance of religion with sexual activity has diminished from 1995 to 2008, however, whereas the importance of service attendance has remained stable. The influence of religion was more apparent among the Latinas of Mexican origin, but this greater influence also diminished by 2006–2008
