On the occurrence of Zenopsis conchifer (Lowe, 1852) (Osteichthyes, Zeidae) in the Mediterranean Sea
The capture of four specimens of Silvery John Dory (Zenopsis conchifer),a species recorded in the Mediterranean Sea for the first time in 2006, is reported from the Iberian coast (western Mediterranean). One of the specimens was caught near the Strait of Gibraltar and is probably a vagrant. Despite these catches, there is no evidence of a self–sustaining population, so this species should be considered as alien in the Mediterranean.Sobre la presencia de Zenopsis conchifer (Lowe, 1852) (Osteichthyes, Zeidae) in el Mar Mediterráneo

Generalized information entropies depending only on the probability distribution
Systems with a long-term stationary state that possess as a spatio-temporally
fluctuation quantity can be described by a superposition of several
statistics, a "super statistics". We consider first, the Gamma, log-normal and
-distributions of . It is assumed that they depend only on , the
probability associated with the microscopic configuration of the system. For
each of the three distributions we calculate the Boltzmann factors and
show that they coincide for small variance of the fluctuations. For the Gamma
distribution it is possible to calculate the entropy in a closed form,
depending on , and to obtain then an equation relating with . We also propose, as other examples, new entropies close related with the
Kaniadakis and two possible Sharma-Mittal entropies. The entropies presented in
this work do not depend on a constant parameter but on . For the
-Gamma distribution and its corresponding Boltzmann factor
and the associated entropy, we show the validity of the saddle-point
approximation. We also briefly discuss the generalization of one of the four
Khinchin axioms to get this proposed entropy.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Physics potential of future supernova neutrino observations
We point out possible features of neutrino spectra from a future galactic
core collapse supernova that will enhance our understanding of neutrino mixing
as well as supernova astrophysics. We describe the neutrino flavor conversions
inside the star, emphasizing the role of "collective effects" that has been
appreciated and understood only very recently. These collective effects change
the traditional predictions of flavor conversion substantially, and enable the
identification of neutrino mixing scenarios through signatures like Earth
matter effects.Comment: 8 pages, uses jpconf.cls. Talk given at Neutrino 2008, Christchurch,

The ionized gas at the center of IC 10: A possible localized chemical pollution by Wolf-Rayet stars
We present results from integral field spectroscopy with the Potsdam
Multi-Aperture Spectrograph at the 3.5m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory of
the intense star-forming region [HL90] 111 at the center of the starburst
galaxy IC 10. We have obtained maps with a spatial sampling of 1" x 1" = 3.9 pc
x 3.9 pc of different emission lines and analyzed the extinction, physical
conditions, nature of the ionization, and chemical abundances of the ionized
gas, as well determined locally the age of the most recent star-formation
event. By defining several apertures, we study the main integrated properties
of some regions within [HL90] 111. Two contiguous spaxels show an unambiguous
detection of the broad He II 4686 emission line, this feature seems to be
produced by a single WNL star. We also report a probable N and He enrichment in
the precise spaxels where the WR features are detected. The enrichment pattern
is roughly consistent with that expected for the pollution of the ejecta of a
single or a very small number of WR stars. Furthermore, this chemical pollution
is very localized (~2"~7.8 pc) and it should be difficult to detect in
star-forming galaxies beyond the Local Volume. We also discuss the use of the
most-common empirical calibrations to estimate the oxygen abundances of the
ionized gas in nearby galaxies from 2D spectroscopic data. The ionization
degree of the gas plays an important role when applying these empirical
methods, as they tend to give lower oxygen abundances with increasing
ionization degree.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

Considerations on the biology of Plesionika edwardsi (Brandt, 1851) (Decapoda, Caridea, Pandalidae) from experimental trap catches in the Spanish western Mediterranean Sea
In this study, the results obtained from three experimental trap shrimp (Plesionika edwardsi) fishing cruises in three different seasons are presented. They were carried out during a total of 50 days, of which 43 days were of effective fishing, covering the whole Spanish Mediterranean coast including the island of Alborán. On the whole, the fishing depth varied between 220 and 384 m, with a mean depth of 318 m. The target species appeared in 81% of the total samples carried out, with a mean yield (cpue) of 108.6 g/trap/day. The largest yields (cpue) of this species were from the Balearic islands, followed by Levant region, whereas the Alborán sea gave the lowest yields. The largest mean length was observed on the Levant zone, but on the contrary the smallest mean lengths were found towards the south, more specifically at Alborán island. Significant differences were found in both the relative and absolute growth, between males and females, with equilibrium in the ratio of the sexes (0.49). A total of 15 crustacean and 12 fish species were identified as accompanying fauna, with Conger conger, Plesionika narval and Scyliorhinus canicula being the most important, based on their mean cpue, although differences in the appearance and yields of the species were found in the different zones and depths. However, the mean yields of these species were very low, due to the high selectivity of the fishing gear used. The appearance of Heterocarpus ensifer, deserves a special mention, since it is the second documented record of the species in the Mediterranean. No disponibl
Fiber Optic Sensing System for Temperature and Gas Monitoring in Coal Waste Pile Combustion Environments
International audienceIt is presented an optical fiber sensing system projected to operate in the demanding conditions associated with coal waste piles in combustion. Distributed temperature measurement and spot gas sensing are requirements for such a system. A field prototype has been installed and is continuously gathering data, which will input a geological model of the coal waste piles in combustion aiming to understand their dynamics and evolution. Results are presented on distributed temperature and ammonia measurement, being noticed any significant methane emission in the short time period considered. Carbon dioxide is also a targeted gas for measurement, with validated results available soon. The assessment of this technology as an effective and reliable tool to address the problem of monitoring coal waste piles in combustion opens the possibility of its widespread application in view of the worldwide presence of coal related fires
An Oxygen Abundance Gradient into the Outer Disk of M81
The extended HI disk and tidal tails of M81 present an interesting
environment to study the effects of galaxy interaction on star formation and
chemical evolution of the outer disk of a large spiral galaxy. We present
H{\alpha} imaging of the outer disk of M81 and luminosities for 40 HII regions
out to about 3 times the optical radius. We have also obtained MMT spectra for
21 HII regions out to more than twice the optical radius. We derive strong line
oxygen abundances for all HII regions using R_{23} based and [NII]/[OII] based
calibrations and electron temperature abundances for seven regions spanning a
galactocentric distance between 5.7 and 32 kpc. We also comment on the
abundances of HII regions near KDG 61 and the "tidal dwarf" candidate HoIX. Our
results constitute the most radially extended metallicity study for M81 to
date. With this extended data set, we find an overall oxygen abundance gradient
of -0.013 dex/kpc over the entire radial range. This is significantly flatter
than what has been found in previous studies which were limited to the optical
disk. From our temperature based abundances, we find a gradient of -0.020
dex/kpc and present the possibility of a broken gradient from these data, but
note the need to obtain more temperature based abundances at intermediate
galactocentric distances (~10-20 kpc) to verify whether or not this may be the
case. We discuss our main result of a rather flat gradient for M81 in the
context of simulations and observations of abundance gradients in other
galaxies. We find that the shallow abundance gradient of M81 is likely a result
of the interaction history of this galaxy.Comment: 41 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
El magmatismo de Atienza (NW de la Cordillera Ibérica): edad, origen y arquitectura del sistema magmático
A sill covering an area of more than 15 km2, several dykes up to 5 m thick and a volcanoclastic deposit crop out with similar petrology in the sector of Atienza (NW Iberian Chain, Spain). They consist of calc-alkaline porphyritic andesites with phenocrysts of plagioclase, amphibole, biotite, garnet and orthopyroxene. Based on U–Pb zircon analysis, an age of 290 ± 3 Ma (Sakmarian-Artinskian in the Cisuralian) has been calculated for this magmatism. The chemistry and geothermobarometry on amphibole crystals revealed crystallisation at different depths between 31 and 16 km, involving several events of magma recharge and fractional crystallisation. Magma ascent led to destabilisation of the amphibole crystals, their replacement by biotite, and the formation of thick microcrystalline coronas. Whole-rock trace element and isotopic compositions support a strong crustal influence in the origin of the magma. Crustal melting was produced by heating generated after lithospheric thinning, delamination, and asthenospheric rise produced after the uplift of the Variscan Orogen and the oroclinal folding of the Iberian Massif
