Correlations of mesospheric winds with subtle motion of the Arctic polar vortex
This paper investigates the relationship between high latitude upper mesospheric winds and the state of the stratospheric polar vortex in the absence of major sudden stratospheric warmings. A ground based Michelson Interferometer stationed at Resolute Bay (74°43' N, 94°58' W) in the Canadian High Arctic is used to measure mesopause region neutral winds using the hydroxyl (OH) Meinel-band airglow emission (central altitude of ~85 km). These observed winds are compared to analysis winds in the upper stratosphere during November and December of 1995 and 1996; years characterized as cold, stable polar vortex periods. Correlation of mesopause wind speeds with those from the upper stratosphere is found to be significant for the 1996 season when the polar vortex is subtly displaced off its initial location by a strong Aleutian High. These mesopause winds are observed to lead stratospheric winds by approximately two days with increasing (decreasing) mesospheric winds predictive of decreasing (increasing) stratospheric winds. No statistically significant correlations are found for the 1995 season when there is no such displacement of the polar vortex

Many methods of measuring niche overlap have been proposed, such as those of Renkonen, Morisita, and Horn. In this paper, conditions are put forward which overlap indices should reasonably be expected to satisfy. A general description of a good index is given, which covers as special cases those of the well-known indices which satisfy all the conditions. A method for the three-dimensional reconstruction of Neurobiotin(TM)-filled neurons and the location of their synaptic inputs
Here, we describe a robust method for mapping the number and type of neuro-chemically distinct synaptic inputs that a single reconstructed neuron receives. We have used individual hypoglossal motor neurons filled with Neurobiotin by semi-loose seal electroporation in thick brainstem slices. These filled motor neurons were then processed for excitatory and inhibitory synaptic inputs, using immunohistochemical-labeling procedures. For excitatory synapses, we used anti-VGLUT2 to locate glutamatergic pre-synaptic terminals and anti-PSD-95 to locate post-synaptic specializations on and within the surface of these filled motor neurons. For inhibitory synapses, we used anti-VGAT to locate GABAergic pre-synaptic terminals and anti-GABA-A receptor subunit a1 to locate the post-synaptic domain. The Neurobiotin-filled and immuno-labeled motor neuron was then processed for optical sectioning using confocal microscopy. The morphology of the motor neuron including its dendritic tree and the distribution of excitatory and inhibitory synapses were then determined by three-dimensional reconstruction using IMARIS software (Bitplane). Using surface rendering, fluorescence thresholding, and masking of unwanted immuno-labeling, tools found in IMARIS, we were able to obtain an accurate 3D structure of an individual neuron including the number and location of its glutamatergic and GABAergic synaptic inputs. The power of this method allows for a rapid morphological confirmation of the post-synaptic responses recorded by patch-clamp prior to Neurobiotin filling. Finally, we show that this method can be adapted to super-resolution microscopy techniques, which will enhance its applicability to the study of neural circuits at the level of synapses

Styrene degradation in perlite biofilter: the overall performance characteristics and dynamic response
[Abstract] Styrene’s degradation in a perlite biofilter including the long-term operation, dynamic response to step-changes in inlet concentration and non-use periods were tested. The study was performed in a bench-scale biofilter with ID 100 mm and a bed height of 1 m. Perlite with a particle size of 2 – 4 mm was used as a packing material. An enrichment mixed culture was immobilized on the packing. The inoculum was obtained from a styrene biofilter. Two different loading conditions were tested: (1) Loading with a high inlet concentration and a high residence time. (2) Loading with a low inlet concentration and the low residence time. Both conditions are common in industrial practice. The dynamic response to a repeated step-change in the inlet concentration (from 50 to 200 mg.m-3) was tested. The dynamic behaviour of the restarting period after varying periods of non-use was also investigated. The results demonstrate a high biofilter stability under extreme loading conditions and also during the step-changes of the inlet concentration. The non-use periods tested had almost no effect on the biofilter performance. The maximum outlet concentration after the restarting of the load was 4 mg.m-3, when a 95 hours idle period was used. After shorter idle periods, the outlet styrene concentrations did not exceed 0.6 mg.m-3

The triggering of MHD instabilities through photospheric footpoint motions
The results of 3D numerical simulations modelling the twisting of a coronal loop due to photospheric vortex motions are presented. The simulations are carried out using an initial purely axial field and an initial equilibrium configuration with twist, . The non-linear and resistive evolutions of the instability are followed. The magnetic field is twisted by the boundary motions into a loop which initially has boundary layers near the photospheric boundaries as has been suggested by previous work. The boundary motions increase the twist in the loop until it becomes unstable. For both cases the boundary twisting triggers the kink instability. In both cases a helical current structure wraps itself around the kinked central current. This current scales linearly with grid resolution indicating current sheet formation. For the cases studied 35-40% of the free magnetic energy is released. This is sufficient to explain the energy released in a compact loop flare
