    Measurement of the F2 structure function in deep inelastic e+^{+}p scattering using 1994 data from the ZEUS detector at HERA

    We present measurements of the structure function \Ft\ in e^+p scattering at HERA in the range 3.5\;\Gevsq < \qsd < 5000\;\Gevsq. A new reconstruction method has allowed a significant improvement in the resolution of the kinematic variables and an extension of the kinematic region covered by the experiment. At \qsd < 35 \;\Gevsq the range in x now spans 6.3\cdot 10^{-5} < x < 0.08 providing overlap with measurements from fixed target experiments. At values of Q^2 above 1000 GeV^2 the x range extends to 0.5. Systematic errors below 5\perc\ have been achieved for most of the kinematic urray, W

    Study of charged-current ep interactions at Q(2)&gt;200 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA

    Deep inelastic charged-current reactions have been studied in e(+)p and e(-)p collisions at a center of mass energy of about 300 GeV in the kinematic region Q(2)>200 GeV2 and x>0.006 using the ZEUS detector at HERA, The integrated cross sections for Q(2)>200 GeV2 are found to be sigma(e+p-->)=30.3(-4.2 -2.6)(+5.5 +1.6) pb and sigma(e-p-->upsilon X)=54.7(-9.8 -3.4)(+15.9 +2.8) pb. Differential cross sections have been measures as functions of the variables x, y and Q(2). From the measured differential cross sections d sigma/dQ(2), the W boson mass is determined to be M(W)=79(-7 -4)(+8 +4) GeV. Measured jet rates and transverse energy profiles agree with model predictions, A search for charged-current interactions with a large rapidity gap yielded one candidate event, corresponding to a cross section of sigma(e+p-->)(Q(2)>200 GeV2; eta(max)<2.5)=0.8(-0.7)(+1.8)+/-0.1 pb

    The impact of long-term confinement and exercise on central and peripheral stress markers

    Long-term isolation has been reported to have impact on psycho-physiological performance in humans. As part of the 520 days isolation study (MARS500, n = 6) from June 3rd 2010 to November 4th 2011, this study aimed to show that stress caused by isolation and confinement is mirrored in cortical activity and cortisol levels and that exercise is a valid countermeasure. Cortical activity was measured by electroencephalography (EEG) pre- and post-moderate exercise every two weeks, salivary cortisol was taken every 60 days. Data show a decrease of global cortical activity, in both alpha- and beta-activity (p < .05–p < .001), and an increase of salivary cortisol (p < .05–p < .001), during the isolation, indicating that isolation acts as a chronic stressor with impact on cortical activity and cortisol levels. Moderate exercise leads to an increase (p < .01) in cortical activity. Therefore, during long-term space missions the factor isolation must be kept in mind as the reduction of cortical activity and the heightened stress level could impair performance. However moderate exercise might be able to counteract this impairment

    Primary intracerebral lymphoma is an uncommon presenting site for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The authors review 28 histopathologically confirmed, consecutive cases, presenting over a 15-year period. The cohort included 20 males and 8 females with a mean age at diagnosis of 54 years (range 27-75 years). Subtotal resection was performed in 8 patients. Radical whole brain irradiation was given to 27 patients. One patient was too unwell to receive treatment and quickly died. Three patients also had chemotherapy. Clinical remission was achieved in 19 patients. Of these, 9 relapsed after a median interval of 18 months. Nine patients (32% total cohort) are still alive and in remission after a median follow-up of 2 years and 10 months (range 11 months to 11 years and 5 months). Cause of death was intracerebral lymphoma in 13 of the 19 patients who died. Median survival was 12 months in this group (range 1 week to 4 years and 9 months). Actuarial 5-year survival for all patients was 19%. The prognosis for patients with primary intracerebral lymphoma treated with radiotherapy alone is poor.</p
