Kinstate intervention in ethnic conflicts : Albania and Turkey compared
Albania and Turkey did not act in overtly irredentist ways towards their ethnic brethren in neighboring states after the end of communism. Why, nonetheless, did Albania facilitate the increase of ethnic conflict in Kosovo and Macedonia, while Turkey did not, with respect to the Turks of Bulgaria? I argue that kin-states undergoing transition are more prone to intervene in external conflicts than states that are not, regardless of the salience of minority demands in the host-state. The transition weakens the institutions of the kin-state. Experiencing limited institutional constraints, self-seeking state officials create alliances with secessionist and autonomist movements across borders alongside their own ideological, clan-based and particularistic interests. Such alliances are often utilized to advance radical domestic agendas. Unlike in Albania's transition environment, in Turkey there were no emerging elites that could potentially form alliances and use external movements to legitimize their own domestic existence or claims

A Comparison of Computerized Chemical Models for Equilibrium Calculations in Aqueous Systems
A survey of computer programs which are currently being used to calculate the distribution of species in aqueous solutions, especially natural waters, has been made in order to 1) provide an inventory of available programs with a short description of their uses, 2) compare the consistency of their output for two given test solutions and 3) identify major weaknesses or problems encountered from their use. More than a dozen active programs which can be used for distribution of species and activity calculations for homogeneos equilibria among the major anions and cations of natural waters have been inventoried. Half of these programs can also accept several trace elements including Fe, Al, Mn, Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ag, Hg, As, Ba, Sr, and B. Consistency between programs was evaluated by comparing the log of the molal concentrations of free ions and complexes for two test solutions: a hypothetical seawater analysis and a hypothetical river water analysis. Comparison of the free major ion concentrations in the river water test case shows excellent agreement for the major species. In the seawater test case there is less agreement and for both test cases the minor species commonly show orders of magnitude differences in concentrations. These differences primarily reflect differences in the thermodynamic data base of each chemical model although other factors such as activity coefficient calculations, redox assumptions, temperature corrections, alkalinity corrections and the number of complexes used all have an affect on the output
Netting Liver Disease:Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in the Initiation and Exacerbation of Liver Pathology
The liver plays a vital role in the immune system. Its unique position in the portal circulation and the architecture of the hepatic sinusoids, in combination with the wide-ranged population of immunocompetent cells, make the liver function as an immune filter. To aid in pathogen clearance, once challenged, the liver initiates the rapid recruitment of a wide variety of inflammatory cells, including neutrophils. These neutrophils, in conjunction with platelets, facilitate the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which are web-like structures of decondensed nuclear DNA, histones, and neutrophil proteins. NETs function as both a physical and a chemical barrier, binding and killing pathogens circulating in the blood stream. In addition to their antimicrobial role, NETs also bind platelets, activate coagulation, and exacerbate host inflammatory response. This interplay between inflammation and coagulation drives microvascular occlusion, ischemia, and (sterile) damage in liver disease. Although direct clinical evidence of this interplay is scarce, preliminary studies indicate that NETs contribute to progression of liver disease and (thrombotic) complications. Here, we provide an overview of the pathological mechanisms of NETs in liver disease. In addition, we summarize clinical evidence for NETs in different disease etiologies and complications of liver disease and discuss the possible implications for the use of NETs as a diagnostic marker and a therapeutic target in liver disease
Leading with Joy: Lessons from the Literature
This article provides an introduction for library leaders at all levels to support equitable conditions for joy in the workplace, as well as for anyone who wants to develop their personal practice of joy through lessons discovered in popular, academic, and professional writing and multimedia. Joy has a place in contemporary libraries’ conversations about burnout, vocational awe, and care. The article begins with a guide to the annotated bibliography which explores five themes: defining joy, finding individual joy, work and organizational joy, empowering change with joy, and joy-adjacent emotions. The thematic guide may be read alone or used as an invitation to read specific entries within the annotated bibliography which follows. This article’s elevation of joy resources and concepts will inspire group discussions, provide a foundation for future research, and offer practical advice for leaders seeking to cultivate joyful work environments

As part of the 1992 Intersociety Conversion Engineering Conference, held in San Diego, California, August 3--7, 1992, the Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage Program coordinated five sessions dealing specifically with aquifer thermal energy storage technologies (ATES). Researchers from Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Canada, and the United States presented papers on a variety of ATES related topics. Steady operation of the electric drive of pipeline armature in the emergency situation at low ambient temperatures
This scientific work is devoted to the study of the electric drive operation of pipeline armature at low ambient temperatures. Hit of moisture into reducer and rare inclusions in operation of locking regulator are led to curdling lubricant that causes the increased wear of mechanical knots. There is a probability of freezing mechanical components; it leads to emergency situations. The problem of improving working efficiency of the electric drive of shut-off regulating armature at low ambient temperatures of the environment is solved in this work. A simulation model of the GUSAR electric drive was developed to solve this problem. Studies of the simulation model show the need to limit the torque increase rate on a drive motor shaft. The algorithm of setting of PI speed controller to obtain acceptable transient processes is suggested. Recommendations for the use of the algorithm in the microprocessor control system of electric drive are proposed. It is shown that the electric drive operation algorithm with torque increasing limitation on the motor shaft will be smoothly working off the perturbing actions that occur in pipeline armature
