Supersymmetry Searches at the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment, 2011
The discovery/exclusion of Supersymmetric models for fundamental interactions
of particles is one of the milestones targeted by the Large Hadron Collider
(LHC), and in particular comprises of a large part of the physics program of
the CMS experiment. Since the initial measurements using the 36\ipb of
integrated luminosity delivered by the LHC in 2010, presently available results
utilize about one fifth of the data delivered in 2011, i.e. in the ballpark of
1\ifb, significantly extending the world limits placed on gluino and squark
production signals. An overview of these analyses is presented, highlighting
four that had been newly made public as of the date of this conference. The
evidence for Supersymmetry (SUSY) is still elusive, and a discussion follows as
to where current searches have not yet probed, also pointing out where they

The Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients (CRAFT) survey
We are developing a purely commensal survey experiment for fast (<5s)
transient radio sources. Short-timescale transients are associated with the
most energetic and brightest single events in the Universe. Our objective is to
cover the enormous volume of transients parameter space made available by
ASKAP, with an unprecedented combination of sensitivity and field of view. Fast
timescale transients open new vistas on the physics of high brightness
temperature emission, extreme states of matter and the physics of strong
gravitational fields. In addition, the detection of extragalactic objects
affords us an entirely new and extremely sensitive probe on the huge reservoir
of baryons present in the IGM. We outline here our approach to the considerable
challenge involved in detecting fast transients, particularly the development
of hardware fast enough to dedisperse and search the ASKAP data stream at or
near real-time rates. Through CRAFT, ASKAP will provide the testbed of many of
the key technologies and survey modes proposed for high time resolution science

Analytical Estimate of the Critical Velocity for Vortex Pair Creation in Trapped Bose Condensates
We use a modified Thomas-Fermi approximation to estimate analytically the
critical velocity for the formation of vortices in harmonically trapped BEC. We
compare this analytical estimate to numerical calculations and to recent
experiments on trapped alkali condensates.Comment: 12 page
Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu channel in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
A search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H to ZZ to 2l 2nu decay
channel, where l = e or mu, in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7
TeV is presented. The data were collected at the LHC, with the CMS detector,
and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 inverse femtobarns. No
significant excess is observed above the background expectation, and upper
limits are set on the Higgs boson production cross section. The presence of the
standard model Higgs boson with a mass in the 270-440 GeV range is excluded at
95% confidence level.Comment: Submitted to JHE
Intra-day variability observations of S5 0716+714 over 4.5 years at 4.8 GHz
We aim to search for evidence of annual modulation in the time scales of the
BL Lac object S5 0716+714. The intra-day variability (IDV) observations were
carried out monthly from 2005 to 2009, with the Urumqi 25m radio telescope at
4.8 GHz. The source has shown prominent IDV as well as long-term flux
variations. The IDV time scale does show evidence in favor of an annual
modulation, suggesting that the IDV of 0716+714 is dominated by interstellar
scintillation. The source underwent a strong outburst phase between mid-2008
and mid-2009; a second intense flare was observed in late 2009, but no
correlation between the total flux density and the IDV time scale is found,
implying that the flaring state of the source does not have serious
implications for the general characteristics of its intra-day variability.
However, we find that the inner-jet position angle is changing throughout the
years, which could result in an annual modulation noise in the anisotropic ISS
model fit. There is also an indication that the lowest IDV amplitudes (rms flux
density) correspond to the slowest time scales of IDV, which would be
consistent with an ISS origin of the IDV of 0716+714.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A; corrected typos

Combined search for the quarks of a sequential fourth generation
Results are presented from a search for a fourth generation of quarks
produced singly or in pairs in a data set corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 5 inverse femtobarns recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in
2011. A novel strategy has been developed for a combined search for quarks of
the up and down type in decay channels with at least one isolated muon or
electron. Limits on the mass of the fourth-generation quarks and the relevant
Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements are derived in the context of a
simple extension of the standard model with a sequential fourth generation of
fermions. The existence of mass-degenerate fourth-generation quarks with masses
below 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level for minimal off-diagonal
mixing between the third- and the fourth-generation quarks. With a mass
difference of 25 GeV between the quark masses, the obtained limit on the masses
of the fourth-generation quarks shifts by about +/- 20 GeV. These results
significantly reduce the allowed parameter space for a fourth generation of

Absence of Detectable Influenza RNA Transmitted via Aerosol during Various Human Respiratory Activities – Experiments from Singapore and Hong Kong
Two independent studies by two separate research teams (from Hong Kong and Singapore) failed to detect any influenza RNA landing on, or inhaled by, a life-like, human manikin target, after exposure to naturally influenza-infected volunteers. For the Hong Kong experiments, 9 influenza-infected volunteers were recruited to breathe, talk/count and cough, from 0.1 m and 0.5 m distance, onto a mouth-breathing manikin. Aerosolised droplets exhaled from the volunteers and entering the manikin’s mouth were collected with PTFE filters and an aerosol sampler, in separate experiments. Virus detection was performed using an in-house influenza RNA reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. No influenza RNA was detected from any of the PTFE filters or air samples. For the Singapore experiments, 6 influenza-infected volunteers were asked to breathe (nasal/mouth breathing), talk (counting in English/second language), cough (from 1 m/0.1 m away) and laugh, onto a thermal, breathing manikin. The manikin’s face was swabbed at specific points (around both eyes, the nostrils and the mouth) before and after exposure to each of these respiratory activities, and was cleaned between each activity with medical grade alcohol swabs. Shadowgraph imaging was used to record the generation of these respiratory aerosols from the infected volunteers and their impact onto the target manikin. No influenza RNA was detected from any of these swabs with either team’s in-house diagnostic influenza assays. All the influenza-infected volunteers had diagnostic swabs taken at recruitment that confirmed influenza (A/H1, A/H3 or B) infection with high viral loads, ranging from 105-108 copies/mL (Hong Kong volunteers/assay) and 104–107 copies/mL influenza viral RNA (Singapore volunteers/assay). These findings suggest that influenza RNA may not be readily transmitted from naturally-infected human source to susceptible recipients via these natural respiratory activities, within these exposure time-frames. Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chambers with Cosmic Rays
The Cathode Strip Chambers (CSCs) constitute the primary muon tracking device
in the CMS endcaps. Their performance has been evaluated using data taken
during a cosmic ray run in fall 2008. Measured noise levels are low, with the
number of noisy channels well below 1%. Coordinate resolution was measured for
all types of chambers, and fall in the range 47 microns to 243 microns. The
efficiencies for local charged track triggers, for hit and for segments
reconstruction were measured, and are above 99%. The timing resolution per
layer is approximately 5 ns
