The Role of Tree Clinics in Urban Forestry
A tree clinic analyzes tree problems and recommends appropriate actions to the public. The objective of tree clinics is to inform the citizen about urban trees. This paper is based on the experiences of 30 tree clinics held in Ann Arbor during the last eight years. The ingredients necessary for a successful tree clinic are discussed: (I) active sponsor, (2) suitable date and time, (3) good location, (4) proper publicity, (5) diversified experts, (6) proper organization, (7) sizable public turnout, and (8) follow-up publicity and acknowledgments
Occasional Publications on Northern Life, No. 04
The need to exchange information on research in reindeer and
caribou diseases became apparent to investigators attending the Second
International Reindeer/Caribou Symposium in Roros, Norway, in 1979.
Initially, bibliographies were to be exchanged by being submitted to and
subsequently distributed by workers at the University of Alaska. When
the bibliographies were submitted, it seemed sensible to computerize the
lists to facilitate searches for specific information in the future. An
apparently simple task became amazingly complex. This is the resultant collection of publications by
reindeer/caribou disease researchers. Because researchers in wildlife
diseases tend to work on more than one species or topic, out of interest
or necessity, a decision was made to include all of a person's
references rather than to limit them to strictly reindeer/caribou
diseases.
The authors hope this will provide a good basis for exchange of
information among all those interested in reindeer/caribou diseases
Velocity dispersions in galaxies: 1: The SO galaxy NGC 7332
A Coude spectrum of the SO galaxy NGC 7332 with 0.9 A resolution from 4186 to 4364 A was obtained with the SEC vidicon television camera and the Hale telescope. Comparisons with spectra of G and K giant stars, numerically broadened for various Maxwellian velocity distributions, give a dispersion velocity in the line of sight of 160 + or - 20 km/sec with the best fit at G8III. The dispersion appears to be constant within + or - 35 km/sec out to 1.4 kpc (H = 100 km/sec/mpc). After correction for projection, the rotation curve has a slope of 0.16 km/sec/pc at the center and a velocity of 130 km/sec at 1.4 kpc where it is still increasing. For an estimated effective radius of 3.5 kpc enclosing half the light, the virial theorem gives a mass of 1.4 x 10 to the 11th power solar masses if the mass-to-light ratio is constant throughout the galaxy. The photographic luminosity is 8.3 x 10 to the 9th power solar luminosities so that the M/L ratio is 17
Helium energy levels including corrections
The correction to energy is expressed in terms of an effective
Hamiltonian for an arbitrary state of helium. Numerical calculations
are performed for levels, and the previous result for the centroid
is corrected. While the resulting theoretical predictions for the ionization
energy are in moderate agreement with experimental values for , ,
and states, they are in significant disagreement for the singlet state

Implicit cognition is impaired and dissociable in a head-injured group with executive deficits
Implicit or non-conscious cognition is traditionally assumed to be robust to pathology but Gomez-Beldarrain et al (1999, 2002) recently showed deficits on a single implicit task after head injury. Laboratory research suggests that implicit processes dissociate. This study therefore examined implicit cognition in 20 head-injured patients and age- and I.Q.-matched controls using a battery of four implicit cognition tasks: a Serial Reaction Time task (SRT), mere exposure effect task, automatic stereotype activation and hidden co-variation detection. Patients were assessed on an extensive neuropsychological battery, and MRI scanned. Inclusion criteria included impairment on at least one measure of executive function. The patient group was impaired relative to the control group on all the implicit cognition tasks except automatic stereotype activation. Effect size analyses using the control mean and standard deviation for reference showed further dissociations across patients and across implicit tasks. Patients impaired on implicit tasks had more cognitive deficits overall than those unimpaired, and a larger Dysexecutive Self/Other discrepancy (DEX) score suggesting greater behavioural problems. Performance on the SRT task correlated with a composite measure of executive function. Head-injury thus produced heterogeneous impairments in the implicit acquisition of new information. Implicit activation of existing knowledge structures appeared intact. Impairments in implicit cognition and executive function may interact to produce dysfunctional behaviour after head-injury. Future comparisons of implicit and explicit cognition should use several measures of each function, to ensure that they measure the latent variable of interest
Reactions of Atomic Oxygen (O(3P)) with Polybutadienes and Related Polymers
Thin films of the following polymers were exposed at ambient temperature to ground-state oxygen atoms (O(3P)), generated by a radio-frequency glow discharge in O2: cis- and trans-1,4-polybutadienes (CB and TB), amorphous 1,2-polybutadiene (VB), polybutadienes with different 1,4/1,2 contents, trans polypentenamer (TP), cis and trans polyoctenamers (CO and TO), and ethylene-propylene rubber (EPM). Transmission infrared spectra of CB and TB films revealed extensive surface recession, or etching, unaccompanied by any microstructural changes within the films, demonstrating that the reactions were confined to the surface layers. Contrary to the report by Rabek, Lucki, and Ranby (1979), there was no O(3P)-induced cis-trans isomerization in CB or TB. From weight-loss measurements, etch rates for polybutadienes were found to be markedly dependent on vinyl content, decreasing by two orders of magnitude from CB (2% 1,2) to structures with 30 to 40% 1,2 double bonds, thereafter increasing by half an order of magnitude to VB (97% 1,2). Relative etch rates for EMP and the polyalkenamers were in the order: EMP is greater than CO (or TO) is greater than TP is greater than CB. The sole non-elastomer examined, TB, had an etch rate about six times that of CB, ascribable to a morphology difference. Cis/trans content had a negligible effect on the etch rate of the polyalkenamers. Mechanisms involving crosslinking through units are proposed for the unexpected protection imparted to polybutadienes by the 1,2 double bonds
