Bond breaking with auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo
Bond stretching mimics different levels of electron correlation and provides
a challenging testbed for approximate many-body computational methods. Using
the recently developed phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AF QMC)
method, we examine bond stretching in the well-studied molecules BH and N,
and in the H chain. To control the sign/phase problem, the phaseless AF
QMC method constrains the paths in the auxiliary-field path integrals with an
approximate phase condition that depends on a trial wave function. With single
Slater determinants from unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) as trial wave
function, the phaseless AF QMC method generally gives better overall accuracy
and a more uniform behavior than the coupled cluster CCSD(T) method in mapping
the potential-energy curve. In both BH and N, we also study the use of
multiple-determinant trial wave functions from multi-configuration
self-consistent-field (MCSCF) calculations. The increase in computational cost
versus the gain in statistical and systematic accuracy are examined. With such
trial wave functions, excellent results are obtained across the entire region

Probabilistic Approach to Structural Change Prediction in Evolving Social Networks
We propose a predictive model of structural
changes in elementary subgraphs of social network based on
Mixture of Markov Chains. The model is trained and verified
on a dataset from a large corporate social network analyzed
in short, one day-long time windows, and reveals distinctive
patterns of evolution of connections on the level of local
network topology. We argue that the network investigated in
such short timescales is highly dynamic and therefore immune
to classic methods of link prediction and structural analysis,
and show that in the case of complex networks, the dynamic
subgraph mining may lead to better prediction accuracy. The

NetSim: The framework for complex network generator
Networks are everywhere and their many types, including social networks, the Internet, food webs etc., have been studied for the last few decades. However, in real-world networks, it's hard to find examples that can be easily comparable, i.e. have the same density or even number of nodes and edges. We propose a flexible and extensible NetSim framework to understand how properties in different types of networks change with varying number of edges and vertices. Our approach enables to simulate three classical network models (random, small-world and scale-free) with easily adjustable model parameters and network size. To be able to compare different networks, for a single experimental setup we kept the number of edges and vertices fixed across the models. To understand how they change depending on the number of nodes and edges we ran over 30,000 simulations and analysed different network characteristics that cannot be derived analytically. Two of the main findings from the analysis are that the average shortest path does not change with the density of the scale-free network but changes for small-world and random networks; the apparent difference in mean betweenness centrality of the scale-free network compared with random and small-world networks
The detection of lubricating oil viscosity changes in gearbox transmission systems driven by sensorless variable speed drives using electrical supply parameters
Lubrication oil plays a decisive role to maintain a reliable and efficient operation of gear transmissions. Many offline methods have been developed to monitor the quality of lubricating oils. This work focus on developing a novel online method to diagnose oil degradation based on the measurements from power supply system to the gearbox. Experimental studies based on an 10kW industrial gearbox fed by a sensorless variable speed drive (VSD) shows that measurable changes in both static power and dynamic behaviour are different with lube oils tested. Therefore, it is feasible to use the static power feature to indicate viscosity changes at low and moderate operating speeds. In the meantime, the dynamic feature can separate viscosity changes for all different tested cases
The benefit of a mechanical needle stimulation pad in patients with chronic neck and lower back pain: Two randomized controlled pilot studies
Objectives. The objective was to investigate whether a treatment with a needle stimulation pad (NSP) changes perceived pain and/or sensory thresholds in patients with chronic neck (NP) and lower back pain (BP). Methods. 40 patients with chronic NP and 42 patients with chronic BP were equally randomized to either treatment or waiting list control group. The treatment group self-administered a NSP over a period of 14 days. Pain ratings were recorded on numerical rating scales (NRSs). Mechanical detection thresholds (MDTs) and pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) were determined at the site of maximal pain and in the adjacent region, vibration detection thresholds (VDT) were measured at close spinal processes. The Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire (NPQ) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were utilized for the NP and BP study, respectively. Results. NRS ratings were significantly reduced for the treatment groups compared to the control groups (NP: P =. 021 and BP: P . 001), accompanied by a significant increase of PPT at pain maximum (NP: P =. 032 and BP: P =. 013). There was no effect on VDT and MDT. The NPQ showed also a significant improvement, but not the ODI. Conclusions. Corticosterone alters materno-fetal glucose partitioning and insulin signalling in pregnant mice.
Glucocorticoids affect glucose metabolism in adults and fetuses, although their effects on materno-fetal glucose partitioning remain unknown. The present study measured maternal hepatic glucose handling and placental glucose transport together with insulin signalling in these tissues in mice drinking corticosterone either from day (D) 11 to D16 or D14 to D19 of pregnancy (term = D21). On the final day of administration, corticosterone-treated mice were hyperinsulinaemic (P 0.05). Insulin receptor and insulin-like growth factor type I receptor abundance did not differ with treatment in either tissue. Corticosterone upregulated the stress-inducible mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) suppressor, Redd1, in liver (D16 and D19) and placenta (D19), in ad libitum fed animals (P < 0.05). Concomitantly, hepatic protein content and placental weight were reduced on D19 (P < 0.05), in association with altered abundance and/or phosphorylation of signalling proteins downstream of mTOR.
