Spontaneous activity in peripheral diaphragmatic lymphatic loops.
The spontaneous contractility of FITC-dextran-filled lymphatics at the periphery of the pleural diaphragm was documented for the first time “in vivo” in anesthetized Wistar rats. We found that lymphatic segments could be divided into four phenotypes: 1) active, displaying rhythmic spontaneous contractions (51.8% of 197 analyzed sites); 2) stretch-activated, whose contraction was triggered by passive distension of the vessel lumen (4.1%); 3) passive, which displayed a completely passive distension (4.5%); and 4) inert, whose diameter never changed over time (39.6%). Smooth muscle actin was detected by immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy in the vessel walls of active but also of inert sites, albeit with a very different structure within the vessel wall. Indeed, while in active segments, actin was arranged in a dense mesh completely surrounding the lumen, in inert segments actin decorated the vessels wall in sparse longitudinal strips. When located nearby along the same lymphatic loop, active, stretch-activated, and passive sites were always recruited in temporal sequence starting from the active contraction. The time delay was ∼0.35 s between active and stretch-activated and 0.54 s between stretch-activated and passive segments, promoting a uniform lymph flux of ∼150/200 pl/min. We conclude that, unlike more central diaphragmatic lymphatic vessels, loops located at the extreme diaphragmatic periphery do require an intrinsic pumping mechanism to propel lymph centripetally, and that such an active lymph propulsion is attained by means of a complex interplay among sites whose properties differ but are indeed able to organize lymph flux in an ordered fashion. </jats:p
Stationary motion of a self gravitating toroidal incompressible liquid layer
We consider an incompressible fluid contained in a toroidal stratum which is
only subjected to Newtonian self-attraction. Under the assumption of
infinitesimal tickness of the stratum we show the existence of stationary
motions during which the stratum is approximatly a round torus (with radii r, R
and R>>r) that rotates around its axis and at the same time rolls on itself.
Therefore each particle of the stratum describes an helix-like trajectory
around the circumference of radius R that connects the centers of the cross
sections of the torus

Desempenho de alface em cultivo solteiro e consorciado com adubos verdes
The performance of lettuce in sole and intercropped with green manures was assessed under different establishment times. The lettuce fresh and dry weight, number of leaves per plant, diameter and length of head, and fresh and dry weight of green manure were evaluated. The intercropping design was additive and both cash and cover crops were planted in rows. The experimental design was of randomized complete blocks in split plot scheme, with six replicates. The plots represented the green manure sowing days (0, 20, 40 and 60 before transplanting of lettuce), and the sub-plots were assigned by cropping systems (lettuce in sole crop and intercropped with black oat, cowpea or white lupin). Simultaneous planting in the intercropping did not affect the lettuce performance. However, when the green manures were sown before lettuce, they influenced it in a negative way. Among the green manures, cowpea increased biomass and had a higher negative effect on lettuce performance compared to white lupin, which appeared to produce less competition. The sole crop and the intercropping with simultaneous planting of the green manures resulted in a better lettuce performance.Foi avaliado o efeito de adubos verdes semeados em diferentes épocas, sobre o desempenho da alface consorciada. Avaliou-se os pesos fresco e seco, número de folhas por planta, diâmetro e comprimento da cabeça da alface. Dos adubos verdes avaliaram-se o peso fresco e seco. O consórcio foi implantado em esquema aditivo e tanto alface quanto os adubos verdes foram plantados em linha. Utilizou-se delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com parcelas subdivididas e seis repetições. As parcelas foram representadas pelo tempo de semeadura dos adubos verdes em relação ao transplante da alface (0, 20, 40 e 60 dias) e as subparcelas foram representadas pelos sistemas de cultivo (alface solteira, e alface consorciada com aveia-preta, caupi ou tremoço-branco). O plantio simultâneo não influenciou o desempenho da alface. No entanto, quando os adubos verdes foram semeados antes do estabelecimento do consórcio, estes influenciaram negativamente o desempenho da hortaliça. Entre os adubos verdes, o caupi teve maior biomassa e maior efeito negativo no desempenho da alface do que o tremoço-branco que se mostrou menos competidor. Precision measurements of the total and partial widths of the psi(2S) charmonium meson with a new complementary-scan technique in antiproton-proton annihilations
We present new precision measurements of the psi(2S) total and partial widths
from excitation curves obtained in antiproton-proton annihilations by Fermilab
experiment E835 at the Antiproton Accumulator in the year 2000. A new technique
of complementary scans was developed to study narrow resonances with
stochastically cooled antiproton beams. The technique relies on precise
revolution-frequency and orbit-length measurements, while making the analysis
of the excitation curve almost independent of machine lattice parameters. We
study the psi(2S) meson through the processes pbar p -> e+ e- and pbar p ->
J/psi + X -> e+ e- + X. We measure the width to be Gamma = 290 +- 25(sta) +-
4(sys) keV and the combination of partial widths Gamma_e+e- * Gamma_pbarp /
Gamma = 579 +- 38(sta) +- 36(sys) meV, which represent the most precise

Shilnikov Lemma for a nondegenerate critical manifold of a Hamiltonian system
We prove an analog of Shilnikov Lemma for a normally hyperbolic symplectic
critical manifold of a Hamiltonian system. Using this
result, trajectories with small energy shadowing chains of homoclinic
orbits to are represented as extremals of a discrete variational problem,
and their existence is proved. This paper is motivated by applications to the
Poincar\'e second species solutions of the 3 body problem with 2 masses small
of order . As , double collisions of small bodies correspond to
a symplectic critical manifold of the regularized Hamiltonian system
Azimuthal asymmetries of charged hadrons produced by high-energy muons scattered off longitudinally polarised deuterons
Azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of positive (h^+) and
negative hadrons (h^-) have been measured by scattering 160 GeV muons off
longitudinally polarised deuterons at CERN. The asymmetries were decomposed in
several terms according to their expected modulation in the azimuthal angle phi
of the outgoing hadron. Each term receives contributions from one or several
spin and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation
functions. The amplitudes of all phi-modulation terms of the hadron asymmetries
integrated over the kinematic variables are found to be consistent with zero
within statistical errors, while the constant terms are nonzero and equal for
h^+ and h^- within the statistical errors. The dependencies of the
phi-modulated terms versus the Bjorken momentum fraction x, the hadron
fractional momentum z, and the hadron transverse momentum p_h^T were studied.
The x dependence of the constant terms for both positive and negative hadrons
is in agreement with the longitudinal double-spin hadron asymmetries, measured
in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. The x dependence of the sin
phi-modulation term is less pronounced than that in the corresponding HERMES
data. All other dependencies of the phi-modulation amplitudes are consistent

Measurement of the Longitudinal Spin Transfer to Lambda and Anti-Lambda Hyperons in Polarised Muon DIS
The longitudinal polarisation transfer from muons to lambda and anti-lambda
hyperons, D_LL, has been studied in deep inelastic scattering off an
unpolarised isoscalar target at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The spin
transfers to lambda and anti-lambda produced in the current fragmentation
region exhibit different behaviours as a function of x and xF . The measured x
and xF dependences of D^lambda_LL are compatible with zero, while
D^anti-lambda_LL tends to increase with xF, reaching values of 0.4 - 0.5. The
resulting average values are D^lambda_LL = -0.012 +- 0.047 +- 0.024 and
D^anti-lambda_LL = 0.249 +- 0.056 +- 0.049. These results are discussed in the
