A Note on Chambers’ Method
A correction is given for one of Chambers’ second-order iteration formulae. It is shown that composition of the secant method with itself exhibits a convergence exponent of 2.414, whereas composition of the iteration function with itself yields an exponent of 2.83

Study of the performance of the LHCb MWPC with cosmic rays
In this note we report the results of measurements performed with cosmic rays on different LHCb Muon Chambers. The main characteristics of the chambers have been investigated as a function of the high voltage value in order to achieve a better comprehension of the detector performance both for optimizing the chamber working conditions on the experimental apparatus and for providing useful information for the Monte Carlo simulation
A novel application of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors in MPGD
We present a novel application of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors in the
construction and characterisation of Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD),
with particular attention to the realisation of the largest triple (Gas
electron Multiplier) GEM chambers so far operated, the GE1/1 chambers of the
CMS experiment at LHC. The GE1/1 CMS project consists of 144 GEM chambers of
about 0.5 m2 active area each, employing three GEM foils per chamber, to be
installed in the forward region of the CMS endcap during the long shutdown of
LHC in 2108-2019. The large active area of each GE1/1 chamber consists of GEM
foils that are mechanically stretched in order to secure their flatness and the
consequent uniform performance of the GE1/1 chamber across its whole active
surface. So far FBGs have been used in high energy physics mainly as high
precision positioning and re-positioning sensors and as low cost, easy to
mount, low space consuming temperature sensors. FBGs are also commonly used for
very precise strain measurements in material studies. In this work we present a
novel use of FBGs as flatness and mechanical tensioning sensors applied to the
wide GEM foils of the GE1/1 chambers. A network of FBG sensors have been used
to determine the optimal mechanical tension applied and to characterise the
mechanical tension that should be applied to the foils. We discuss the results
of the test done on a full-sized GE1/1 final prototype, the studies done to
fully characterise the GEM material, how this information was used to define a

Test Facility for Full-Equipped Chambers for the LHCb Muon Detector
The LHCb Muon System is made up by more than 1300 chambers of 20 different types, resulting in more than 120k readout channels. In order to guarantee high-quality performance during the experiment it is of crucial importance to get a complete knowledge of the fully equipped detector functionalities.A complete test system was built and a C++ ROOT software was developed to allow carring out a variety of studies on the many LHCb Muon chambers. Such system provides full control of the frontend, the high-voltage and the acquisition electronics and makes available a number of procedures to study the chambersâ performance. It was used for studies and a quality control on the chambers before and during the final positioning on the detector. In this note an overview of the hardware setup and of the software will be given. Results of measurements related to front-end channels characteristics will be presented
When are Zariski chambers numerically determined?
The big cone of every smooth projective surface X admits a natural decomposition into Zariski chambers. The purpose of this note is to give a simple criterion for the interiors of all Zariski chambers on X to be numerically determined Weyl chambers. Such a criterion generalizes the results of Bauer-Funke [4] on K3 surfaces to arbitrary smooth projective surfaces. In the last section, we study the relation between decompositions of the big cone and elliptic fibrations on some surfaces. © 2016 by De Gruyter
The enigma of Vitruvian resonating vases and the relevance of the concept for today
The clarity of sound within Greek or Roman theatres (without any form of enhancement) will be impressive to any visitor. The seats arranged in curved rows around the circular orchestra form large horizontal reflecting surfaces. The paths of sound waves travel from the source (the actor or singer) to each of the listeners in a direct path (i.e. without obstruction or reflection). Vitruvius, however, claimed further enhancements could be made. In theatres, also, are copper vases and these are placed in chambers under the rows of seats in accordance with mathematical reckoning.
