    Synthesis, thermal behavior, and aggregation in aqueous solution of poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)

    Indexación: ScieloABSTRACT Amphiphilic block copolymers of poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA and poly(2-hidroxyethyl methacrylate) PHEMA were synthesized by a two-step atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Copolymers with various degrees of polymerization and different relative block sizes were obtained. The structure of the resulting polymers have been characterized and verified by FT-IR and 1H-NMR, molecular weight were determined by size exclusion chromatography analyses. The thermal properties of these polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry DSC and thermogravimetric analysis TGA. The glass transition temperature of mono halogenated PMMA increases from 116 °C to 123 °C with increasing molecular weight, whereas the glass transition temperature of block copolymers depends slightly on polymer structure. The derivatives of TGA curves indicate that thermal degradation occurs in one stage. The self-assembly of PMMA-b-PHEMA in aqueous solution have been investigated by fluorescence probing methods. The critical micelle concentrations are in the range 10-6 - 10-7 M. The micropolarity sensed by pyrene is higher than in aggregates formed by block copolymers based on polystyrene.     Background-independent charges in Topologically Massive Gravity

    We construct background-independent Noether charges in Topologically Massive Gravity with negative cosmological constant using its first-order formulation. The procedure is carried out by keeping track of the surface terms in the variation of the action, regardless the value of the gravitational Chern-Simons coupling μ\mu. In particular, this method provides a definition of conserved quantities for solutions at the chiral point μl=1\mu l = 1 (ll is the AdS radius) that contain logarithmic terms (Log Gravity). It is also shown that the charge formula gives a finite result for warped AdS black holes without the need for any background-substraction procedure.Comment: 23 pages; appendix and a few references added; final version for JHE

    Se ha medido la velocidad de desactivación de tripletes carbonilicos (biacetilo, bencilo, benzofenona y 4-metil-2-pentanona) por una serie d,e derivados del benceno. Los resultados pueden ser interpretados por un mecanismo de transferencia de carga. Los compuestos con hidrógenos lábiles (i.e.cumeno) muestran una mayor reactividad. La abstracción de hidrógeno ocurre desde el complejo de transferencia de carga. La desactivación del triplete de la 4-metil-2-pentanona fue medida entre - 5 y 70°C. Las energias de activación obtenidas variaron entre 8.1 kcal (para el cumeno) y 10 kcal (para el benceno)

    Thermodynamics of Large AdS Black Holes

    We consider leading order quantum corrections to the geometry of large AdS black holes in a spherical reduction of four-dimensional Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant. The Hawking temperature grows without bound with increasing black hole mass, yet the semiclassical back-reaction on the geometry is relatively mild, indicating that observers in free fall outside a large AdS black hole never see thermal radiation at the Hawking temperature. The positive specific heat of large AdS black holes is a statement about the dual gauge theory rather than an observable property on the gravity side. Implications for string thermodynamics with an AdS infrared regulator are briefly discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure, v2. added reference

    Two-step likelihood ratio test for item-level model comparison in cognitive diagnosis models

A critical concernis in selecting the most appropriate model at the item level. Several tests for model comparison have been employed, which include the likelihood ratio (LR) and the Wald (W) tests. Although the LR test is relatively more robust than the W test, the current implementation of the LR test is very time consuming, given that it requires calibrating many different models and comparing them to the general model. In this article, we introduce the two-step LR test (2LR), an approximation to the LR test based on a two-step estimation procedure under the generalized deterministic inputs, noisy, “and” gate (G-DINA) model framework, the two-step LR test (2LR). The 2LR test is shown to have similar performance as the LR test.     Serendipitous discovery of the long-sought AGN in Arp 299-A

    Context: The dusty nuclear regions of luminous infra-red galaxies (LIRGs) are heated by either an intense burst of massive star formation, an active galactic nucleus (AGN), or a combination of both. Disentangling the contribution of each of those putative dust-heating agents is a challenging task, and direct imaging of the innermost few pc can only be accomplished at radio wavelengths, using very high-angular resolution observations. Aims: We observed the nucleus A of the interacting starburst galaxy Arp 299, using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio observations at 1.7 and 5.0 GHz. Our aim was to characterize the compact sources in the innermost few pc region of Arp 299-A, as well as to detect recently exploded core-collapse supernovae. Methods: We used the European VLBI Network (EVN) to image the 1.7 and 5.0 GHz compact radio emission of the parsec-scale structure in the nucleus of Arp 299-A with milliarcsecond resolution. Results: Our EVN observations show that one of the compact VLBI sources, A1, previously detected at 5.0 GHz, has a flat spectrum between 1.7 and 5.0 GHz and is the brightest source at both frequencies. Our 1.7 GHz EVN image shows also diffuse, low-surface brightness emission extending westwards from A1 and displays a prominent core-jet structure. Conclusions: The morphology, radio luminosity, spectral index and ratio of radio-to-X-ray emission of the A1-A5 region is consistent with a low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN), and rules out the possibility that it is a chain of young radio supernovae (RSNe) and supernova remnants (SNRs). We therefore conclude that A1-A5 is the long-sought AGN in Arp 299-A.
