Correlations for pairs of periodic trajectories for open billiards

In this paper we prove two asymptotic estimates for pairs of closed trajectories for open billiards similar to those established by Pollicott and Sharp for closed geodesics on negatively curved compact surfaces. The first of these estimates holds for general open billiards in any dimension. The more intricate second estimate is established for open billiards satisfying the so called Dolgopyat type estimates. This class of billiards includes all open billiards in the plane and open billiards in RN,N3\R^N, N \geq 3 satisfying some additional conditions

Self-consistent Skyrme QRPA for use in axially-symmetric nuclei of arbitrary mass

We describe a new implementation of the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) in axially-symmetric deformed nuclei with Skyrme and volume-pairing energy-density functionals. After using a variety of tests to demonstrate the accuracy of the code in ^{24,26}Mg and ^{16}O, we report the first fully self-consistent application of the Skyrme QRPA to a heavy deformed nucleus, calculating strength distributions for several K^pi in ^{172}Yb. We present energy-weighted sums, properties of gamma-vibrational and low-energy K^pi=0^+ states, and the complete isovector E1 strength function. The QRPA calculation reproduces the properties of the low-lying 2^+ states as well or better than it typically does in spherical nuclei.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

Probability for Primordial Black Holes in Multidimensional Universe with Nonlinear Scalar Curvature Terms

We investigate multi-dimensional universe with nonlinear scalar curvature terms to evaluate the probability of creation of primordial black holes. For this we obtain Euclidean instanton solution in two different topologies: (a) SD1S^{D-1} - topology which does not accommodate primordial black holes and (b) S1×SD2S^1\times S^{D-2}-topology which accommodates a pair of black holes. The probability for quantum creation of an inflationary universe with a pair of black holes has been evaluated assuming a gravitational action which is described by a polynomial function of scalar curvature with or without a cosmological constant (Λ\Lambda ) using the framework of semiclassical approximation of Hartle-Hawking boundary conditions. We discuss here a class of new gravitational instantons solution in the R4R^4-theory which are relevant for cosmological model building.Comment: 18 pages, no figure. accepted in Phys. Rev.

Transition rates and nuclear structure changes in mirror nuclei 47Cr and 47V

Lifetime measurements in the mirror nuclei 47Cr and 47V were performed by means of the Doppler-shift attenuation method using the multidetector array EUROBALL, in conjunction with the ancillary detectors ISIS and the Neutron Wall. The determined transition strengths in the yrast cascades are well described by full pf shell model calculations.Comment: Latex2e, 11 pages, 3 figure

Investigation of possibilities for high heavy metal content sludges utilization by incorporating them in concrete products

The safe removal of sludge, obtained during the surface treatment of different metal products, is a serious environmental problem. These sludges are usually characterized by a high content of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn, Cr, Cd, Mn), low quality and are obtained in many small industrial units in the whole country, which makes their centralized treatment difficult. In world practice, different methods are used for component fixation of such sludge, in the aim to prevent leaching of the metals causing pollution of the soil and underground water. The aim of the recent work is to prepare the sludge in a form of light (keramzit) fillers by preliminary treatment with binding substances and to introduce them in non supporting concrete products - curbs, stakes and similar products. The investigation was made with two types of sludge - from a production line for thermal treatment and hardening of different parts used in machine building and from a production line for surface decoration treatment (nickel-plating and chromium-plating) of consumer products. The sludge were dried and ground and then granulated with a solution of water glass. After their solidifying the air dried granules with a size of 5 to 15 mm were treated with cement milk and air dried again. With the obtained granules, standard percolation test for leaching metals like Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr was carried out. After a preliminary calculation of concrete mixtures, these granules were mixed with Portland cement and concrete sample products were made. These molded concrete samples were characterized by their density, water absorption, and mechanical strength for defined standard periods of time. The samples were subjected to a modified percolation test for leaching metals. The metal concentration in eluates was determined by Atomic Spectral Analysis
